“Adequate but could do better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013 via mobile

We chose Jury's Inn in Plymouth because of its proximity to my elder daughter's new university accommodation and booked a room with two double beds for my husband, myself and my younger daughter to stay overnight as ED wasn't able to move in until after 4.00pm. ED was sleeping at her digs for the first time.

After doing the whole moving in thing, we arrived at the hotel at around 6.30pm. We were aware that the hotel had no parking, but we weren't told where to park, so we missed the turning for the car park behind the hotel and had to drive around again to gain access to it. The car park only took coins, so it was fortunate that we managed to get together £10 in coins to pay the fee!

The hotel lobby was bright and modern and we were pleasantly surprised. We were greeted by a staff member after a short wait, and he duly found our booking. He told us that if we'd asked at Reception, we could have had a concessionary rate for the car park - it was a pity that information hadn't been included in the email we received that confirmed our booking. That was where the fun started. Their system had us down for a family room for two adults and two children, so he amended the booking and gave us our room key. We took the lift to the sixth floor and followed the seemingly endless corridors to our room. Opening the door we were greeted by three single beds and a put you up bed - not quite what we were expecting. So we retraced our steps back to Reception and our room was changed - we were still on the sixth floor, but we did have the right beds, a double and a single (YD was hoping for a double to herself!).

The room was adequate though a bit tired and the bathroom was a bit sad. The shower rail was badly rusted, the tiles were grubby and the complimentary toiletries were in containers bolted to the wall. There was a small pile of dark curly hair in the corner of the bathroom which did not belong to any of us! What I found strange was that the room was to accommodate three people, but there were two hand towels, two bath towels, two mugs - you get the drift. Three of everything would have been appreciated. I did not sleep very well as the room as there was a great deal of traffic noise even though it was so high up. Other reviewers have said that the windows were of poor quality and I would have to agree.

We had breakfast next morning in the hotel and ED came up to the hotel to eat with us. We paid £10 per person for our meal, but we later found out that if we had booked the night before, it would have been £8 per person. It would have been nice if we had been told that when we booked in. The breakfast itself was the usual big hotel buffet (Hiltons are some of the best) with a pretty good selection. My husband wanted his eggs fried and the chef in duty obligingly produced two fresh fried eggs in a short time.

All in all, an adequate stay - but it could have been so much better.

This provides a very central location for walking and seeing the sites. The rooms are adequate and the menu is tasty but I am sure the chefs are under utilized. Upper floors help as street noise can be somewhat annoying. Coach tours into the dining room get special preference and there is no alternative hotel dining except the bar for the rest of the visitors. Not totally acceptable for some ages.

Room Tip: Upper floors help with street noise. Ask for a fan on warmer days.

This is an average hotel, we were traveling on to Newquay the next day so only stayed one night.
We checked in early ,which was a bonus. The room was the usual corporate offering but on the top floor so we had lovely view of the Hoe . The bar downstairs was well stocked and packed at 5pm on a Saturday evening which was good.
Sky sports playing Aston Villa and Chelsea another bonus.
Overall a nice stay in a beautiful city.
Downside the random car park at the back of their hotel and then the walk to the tradesman entrance to enter the hotel.

Room Tip: The one tip is if you are driving in make sure you go around the bus station and a sharp left will t...

Dear Guest

Glad we were able to help you check in early which we always do whenever we can.
Just to clarify, the entrance at the rear of the property is not the tradesman entrance it is simply a convenient entry point from the popular Barbican area.
So glad you enjoyed the view from the 8th floor, we look forward to welcoming you to Plymouth soon

Kind Regards

The Jurys Inn Plymouth is a great hotel not too far from the city centre, rooms are clean and the staff are all in all a helpful bunch.

I would however to advise against staying in this hotel on a Friday or Saturday as this place is a popular resting place for Sailors from nearby bases, as a result it can be a little loud.

Dear Guest

We are always pleased to hear our welcoming and helpful staff recognised. Thank you for this.
While we do sometimes have naval personnel staying with us which is always a pleasure, care is taken to ensure the bar and hotel are kept pleasant for all our guests.

Just started experiencing Jury's Inns and quite pleased, although more expensive than Premier or Ibis. Still, location is what I want, and close to the centre of town is excellent. The Drake shopping mall is across the road and you can walk through that to get down to the Barbican and The Hoe.
I found the restaurant quite noisy as there were conference groups staying, and when they've had a few beers/wines, got quite rowdy - especially when returning to rooms after others were in bed.
One annoying aspect was the provision of an ice machine on every floor, which in the middle of the night, can cause quite a shock to a sleeper nearby (ME!) when other guests are filling metal ice buckets every 15 minutes!

Room Tip: Don't get a room near the ice machine!!!

We arrived to find out that we would have to pay £30 for parking for the duration of our stay in a car park adjacent to the hotel... Fair enough, but don't expect to leave said car park and return to an empty space once bingo has begun in Gala Bingo who use the same car park! Nightmare!

Anyway, we booked the hotel in advance and got a pretty good deal over the Internet. Otherwise I'd have ruled out this hotel due to price! The reception staff were very helpful on checking in and continued to be so for the duration of our stay.
Rooms were very clean and serviced every day.
One issue - the extractor fan in the bathroom was extremely loud! And it was on constantly!
There were set times where doors were slamming up and down the corridor, so soft closers would be beneficial!

We didn't sample breakfast, but did notice a Costa Coffee, which was a bonus.

I am a regular visitor to Jury's Inns around the country, being honest Plymouth lacks the customer service standard of other hotels. Being a rewards member they seem to forget to acknowledge this, the level 3 rewards are not available at check in and no water is placed in the room. Points are also not credited resulting in an email to Jury's rewards.
The Bar staff we more interested in chatting to each other than serving customers on my recent visit.
The rooms are clean and functional and the Internet signal is very good throughout the hotel.
On check out, the printer was not working so I was unable to get a receipt, this was meant to be emailed.
Night manager was very helpful and rectified the issues. Thanks

Dear Steve

Many apolgies for the lack of Level 3 Jurys Inn benefits during your recent stay.
I have investigated thoroughly and discovered that your VIP status was not automatically communicated to us in Plymouth as it normally would be. I have spoken to Jurys Inn central booking to rectify the situation.
Once again many apologies and we look forward to making your next stay in Plymouth memorable for all the right reasons.

Kind regards
