“Enjoy it rather than eulogise it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

There are dangers in trying to review places that are just good because they are what they are. So it is with the Dolphin. The factual descriptions in the earlier reviews are correct. Trying to give it a title or a grade adds nothing. Waxing lyrical reflects on the reviewer not the pub. Saying that it is the soul of the city or an icon of the community, or that it is a quintessential English pub, or that it doesn't resort to food, Muzak or is very basic, doesn't matter. I like it because its about drinking and people.

“Could there be a better pub?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

No food but you can bring in your own fom any takeaway. No music unless there is an impromtu performance with or without instruments. No carpet - hooray. No hassle for dogs. Nothing poncy except the occasional over glitzy hen group or officers from the citadel in jacket and tie. Real fires during cold snaps. Easy going but no nonsense bar staff. Perfectly kept Bass direct from the Kegs in the racks. Rickety tables and benches. Perfection. Good feel whether heaving or quiet.

“simply the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

The best pub in Plymouth. Have to agree with all the previous reviewers. Its unique. No food, no music just a good mix of people out to have an enjoyable lunchtime or evening. Not alot more to say other than its a great place to have a drink and spend time in.

“Just beer.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

Agree with all the previous reviewers. Don't let anyone change this place. The Bass is perfect. The mixed clientele is out to enjoy themselves or kill time affably. The ambience and (perhaps slightly studied) laid back resistance to change, all makes for a good time.

“Undoubtedly the best Bass beer in the world...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

Whenever I visit Plymouth I make beeline for this pub on the Barbican. You either loathe it or love it, but you can't fault the beer, gravity fed from a raft of racked barrels. The local vernacular is a bit choice, but don't let put you off visiting this place, family owned for almost a century, which makes little concession to creature comfort. Great place to visit and enjoy
