Stayed here late July as a stop over for two nights travelling through Devon and Somerset.
Reception-
We arrived 2 hours earlier than expected so asked if our room was available, after checking the receptionist told us it was and promptly gave us access.
Rooms-
Very nice indeed, spotless and fresh feeling.

Bathroom-
Clean , good shower, nice soaps and gels.

Restaurant-
We never actually got to eat in there, as we were meeting up with friends elsewhere, but the menu looked good if that helps ?

Bar-
Nice bar, few draught beers on and a fair selection of bottled beers and wines a available.

Car parking-
There is a small charge, but it felt secure leaving it there for a small fee.

Overall-
Good comfortable stay, good location for the Hoe and Barbican, as for car parking, most coastal towns and Cities charge for this, & as long as my car is secure it's worth it in my opinion.

I stayed here recently and had found the entrance quite welcoming and the room I had was basic and comofrtable as was the bed, room had the basics youd expect which included a TV (not loads of channels) and a kettle with some hot drinks. They gave given extra milks for those who use more than one per cup - which was nice. Unless you like drinking water from the bathroom taps, which lots of us dont like doing you were stuck for water as other hotels give a bottlle of drinking water - this one doesnt though. If you need anything, best establish it sooner rather than later as the front area seemed to shut down early. Aside from that, the place was clean and tidy.

Bad sides

1) WIFI: - Additional charge for WIFI (If they wish to cater for business cusmtomers they should consider allowing this in the price/ Likewise, with the way smart phones are taking over, having access to wifi should be expected and the norm)

2) Breakfast: - RIP OFF! Charged £20.00 for breakfast and it was seriouisly the worst breakfast I have had at a hotel in my entire life and Ive stayed at a few places. I did read the reviews about this from others shortly after I booked and before I arrrived and saw the negative comments and assumed they were being unfairly harsh - they were right though. Must have got £1.50 worth of food but the charge was £20.00! There was hardly anything of it. They gave juice as well but as youd expect, they are served up in shot glasses. Not normally an issue as you can get more, but the lady (not for the hot as others do) -If you book, dont pay for their breakfast as its not value for money and it really isnt worth the money they are asking. Instead, go somewhere local - weatherspoons as will pay a fraction of the cost and will arguably make sure you are able to survive until lunch.

3) NOISE: - Near Weatherspoon pub. I stayed during the week and couldnt sleep over the nosie - hate to see what its like on a weekend (hotel cant be blamed for their location though)

4) Health Facitlites: - Gym was in two separate rooms and small. This is open to the general public as is the pool. When I got there the pool was packed out with mothers and tiny babies and/or young children so was unable to use the pool at all as was packed with kids all over the place. The changing rooms smelt like raw sewerage.

5) Appearance: - The entrance was nice and modern as was their bar and the rooms werent overly bad. The place dropped a bit when you went through the halls to your room and to the breakfast room in the morning. The only three areas that were really maintained would be the main lobby, the bar (which is directly conneted with the lobby) and the room wasnt too bad, The rest was a bit tired looking and old. Looked as though it had been decorated in the 1980's by an interior designer who was 150 years old and had a fetish for "frills and ruffles and flower patterns". The rest of the hotel needs modernising.

Wont go as far as saying it was the worst hotel I have stayed in but dont think it was too far off.

Wouldnt choose to stay there again

Room Tip: A tip - hmmmm sure most of the rooms are ok but infortuantely hotels are meant to be the fuller pack...

Dear Sir/Madame
Thank you for your recent review and I am sorry to hear that parts of your stay were unsatisfactory, I would like to take this opportunity to respond to some of your comments.

With regards to the Wi-Fi, this is something we have always charged for and it does state on our website that there is a charge for this. We have corporate customers who return to us on a weekly basis that have been happy to pay for the Wi-Fi each time they stay, we feel the prices we charge are very reasonable.

I was disappointed to read that you were not happy with the breakfast. The fruit juices are available on the buffet counter for you to re-fill your glass as many times as you would like and if your breakfast was not adequate size, we would of been more than happy to add more to your plate if we were made aware of this .Our food is freshly prepared every morning and is cooked to order. The breakfast includes a choice of cereal, yoghurt, fresh grapefruit and orange segments, croissants are also available on request, and this is followed by a full English breakfast. All guests are offered a room only rate or a bed and breakfast rate on booking.

As for our leisure complex, with your stay being around the school holidays, there is little we can do about the amount of people using the pool at the same time and all hotels with leisure facilities are open to the public. We have spoken to the leisure manager about your comments of a sewerage smell in the changing rooms and he has told us that they are cleaned every hour.

Only a few months back we had all the hotel corridors in the hotel updated with new carpet and fresh paint and our breakfast room was refurbished also with new carpets, curtains and wallpaper. The decor may not be to everyone’s taste but we are a grade ll listed building even though the reception area has been modernized.

We would like to thank you for your review and we hope to welcome you back to The New Continental Hotel in the future.

Good points - handy for the hoe with reasonable daily parking charges for residents, good breakfast cooked to order rather than buffet, my 7 year old loved the fact it had a pool and the brasserie was able to accommodate us at short notice. Food okay in the brasserie with reasonable wine selection. Room insulation from traffic noise and wind okay but not brilliant. We were allowed to check in early on arriving at 1pm so hotel very flexible.

Not so good points - booked a twin room and ended up with double and the hotel was not able to move us. Hotel is either surrounded by a main road or the car park so don't expect any stunning views. We arrived for a swim and was asked to go back to our room to use our room bath towels since the leisure club had run out which was a pain.

Overall - it was okay.

my sister and I stayed here as we had tickets to see Michael McIntyre and it made our trip away perfect.
Staff friendly and helpful, room good and the best cooked breakfast we have had in a long time.

We stayed here for one night when visiting Plymouth for a party. The room was spacious but that is all we liked about this hotel!
On arrival there is only a small car park which they charge you to use. When you are paying just under £100 a night you don't expect to pay to park your vehicle on their premises!
Reception didn't offer us any information, such as where the pool was, the time breakfast was served, etc. They expected payment in advance and had no porter to help with the luggage.
The pool and surrounding facilities were very disappointing. It is a very basic, old-fashioned undersized pool which looked quite Victorian. There was a small sauna and steam room but no jacuzzi. The steam room had an awful smell so we couldn't use it. There are no frills to this area and the changing rooms are basic - there was not even a dryer/spinner which makes it quite awkward when you have to take your wet swimwear back to your room. We thought it is also a matter of false advertising when you show a glass of orange by the pool in the web site photograph but do not allow any food or drink in this area: furthermore, there was not anywhere near the pool where you could purchase a glass of orange juice! I note there are few photos of the pool area: this is because it is unappealing and drab.
The worst thing for us was the bathroom. Initially it looked appealing being spacious and clean, however, the glass shower screen leaked terribly allowing a huge amount of water to soak the floor. There was nothing we could do to prevent this; we tried directing the shower head away from the door but it didn't help. It was clearly an ongoing problem as the laminate floor was split and damaged from where it had happened previously. This was quite horrible as we had nothing to wipe the water up with other than a bath mat but we didn't have time to ask the hotel to do anything about it as we needed to get ready to go out.
The ONLY saving grace for this hotel was the member of staff in the restaurant at breakfast. Unfortunately, we misheard the time of breakfast (we couldn't find any information in the room) and arrived after it had finished. We asked if we might just have cereal and the waitress offered us some bacon and eggs, as well as tea and coffee. For this we were very grateful.
We would not stay here again.

Car Park small and full, which meant that myself and a convoy of other guests would drive in through the auto barrier, then having found no where to park had to abandon our vehicles in the rain, go into the reception around the corner, collect a ticket for the exit barrier, in order to exit and find alternative parking. The exit barrier had a mind of its own and only worked occasionally which meant a second and third rain soaked visit to reception for exit tickets !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whilst joining the queue at reception, I heard other visitors asking to have their rooms changed due to the temperature of the room only be told by the member of staff that "sorry but all of our rooms are hot".

I can confirm that it was much hotter in the rooms than outside, there was no air-con and the open window offered some relief from the heat but not from the traffic noise.

Would have rated it even worse if it hadnt been for the politness of the staff who deserve a medal. Needless to say I wont stay there again.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your recent review with regards to your stay and i would like to respond to some of your comments made.

Our car park holds up to about 80 cars and we also have extra car parking around the back of the hotel in our leisure complex car park, unfortunately at the time of your stay Plymouth was very busy with concerts and firework events meaning a fully booked hotel. We do make every customer aware that our car park does work on a first come first serve basis and we were very aware that this particular week, there was a lot of people having difficulty finding car park spaces. Unfortunately we have found that the car park barrier is temperamental when it is raining but we cannot keep the barrier lifted as we would have customers not staying in the hotel trying to park.
I do apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you but we hope you would return to The New Continental Hotel in the future.

Kind regards
