Plymouth isn't blessed with a great many hotels in the city centre, but there are plenty of better choices than the tired and grubby Copthorne. I've stayed at many Copthornes before and always had a good stay in them. But the Copthorne in Plymouth is very much in need of refurbishment and some TLC.
The main reason we picked this hotel for this particular stay was the Wi-Fi that I needed for some work that interfered with our weekend away. But the £5 per day internet access in our room was unreliable, dropping every 5 minutes and taking between 5 and 10 minutes to reappear.
The room itself was grubby, with masking tape covering up scuffs on the wall and mould in the bathroom. I might have had the same room as Henry W from Swindon as we also overlooked the busy roundabout and suffered the same car noise all night, which was almost drowned out by the noisy lift mechanism until the early hours of the morning.
The walls were decorated brown resulting in the whole room being darker than it needed to be even in daylight. The bed was soft and lumpy making for an uncomfortable sleep. The shower was old and the water came out at such a force that it felt like having pins fired into your body.
We took one look at the breakfast room and went elsewhere, not wanting to eat in such a dirty environment.
The area itself could be described as tired despite being right next door to a Sainsbury’s and at the top end of the shopping centre. If you want to be close to the Barbican and The Hoe, this is not the best choice: there are much better hotels nearer to those areas; and you won’t relish the walk back to the Copthorne after dark so get a cab.
We checked out after one night of our three-night booking and went elsewhere. Even at 100% non-refundable cancellation rates we felt it worth losing the cost of the two remaining nights and going to another hotel closer to The Barbican and The Hoe that wasn't dismal to stay in.
The Copthorne Plymouth purports to be a 4-star hotel. But the experience you get from this hotel is 3-star at best, although I would rate it more like 2-star. AVOID!!!

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on your recent stay with us here at the Copthorne Hotel Plymouth. Although it is never pleasant to receive negative feedback, we regard all feedback as most valuable.
May I offer our apologies that the Copthorne Hotel has failed to live up to your expectations. As a busy 3-star hotel we aim to deliver a high quality service and I apologies that we failed to do this, this time.
We apologies for the poor service of internet facilities that you received during your stay and would like to bring to your attention that 24hr support is always available should you be experiencing difficulties.
It is noted that the Copthorne hotel Plymouth requires an injection of capital, which is currently in the early planning stages. However we would not expect work to commence until mid 2014.
Should you ever consider returning to Plymouth, please contact me directly and allow me the chance to restore your faith in us.
