“Great sporting dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

My company took a table last night at the excellent 'Howard Webb' (football referee) event.

Firstly the staff were courteous, friendly and helpful. Their attitude was first class.

Secondly, and significantly, the food was magnificent. All courses were well presented, piping hot (where appropriate) and delicious. The most important main course of Pheasant was especially impressive, particularly as this was 'mass catering'.

I attended a similar dinner at Grosvenor House on Park Lane the previous evening, admittedly with much larger numbers, but the service and menu eclipsed what they had to offer.

This hotel is perfectly placed for Plymouth City Centre and oozes charm. Not at all modern but very relaxing and classy. The staff were without exception pleasant and helpful. We stayed over a weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back.

The room we stayed in was just right for our needs. It was clean, of reasonable size and had the usual flat screen tv, coffee & tea making facilities and free inter net connection (not wi fi). For wi fi you had to be in the bar or lounge.

The bar food was very reasonable and not too expensive as was the English breakfast.

Room Tip: You are a short taxi ride from the Royal William Yard Harbour which is definately worth a visit for...

I attended a wedding on Friday 25th October at this hotel. From start to finish the hotel made the day absolutely fantastic for the special couple and their many guests. The venue was beautiful, we made excellent use of the lounge area and enjoyed a party atmosphere in the beautifully decorated ballroom. The bar staff were very friendly and nobody waited to be served.

Throughout the day the staff were so attentive and made every guest feel special, regardless of the request it happened quickly, not an easy task with 80 day guests and a party of 160 people in the evening! I would particularly like to thank reception for ensuring everybody was checked in quickly and able to off load their luggage prior to the arrival of the bride and groom.

There were many opportunities to trial the food during the wedding and at breakfast the following morning. The food on all occasions was plentiful, hot and delicious. The pheasant was particularly tasty and comes highly recommended. The evening buffet was endless with many choices and a few sweet treats.

I stayed in room 309 for the evening and my only problem is that I was so busy the wedding that I didn't get enough time to enjoy the little luxuries within the room. The room was tastefully decorated maintaining the original charm whilst bringing in a modern touch.

If you are visiting Plymouth or planning a wedding I would highly recommend this hotel and the wonderful staff that make the day special - Thank you.

Room Tip: As many family and friends were staying, I had the opportunity to peek at many rooms. They are all u...

I recently attended a family wedding at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, and could not fault our entire stay. Upon arrival following the wedding ceremony, we were welcomed by the reception staff, and checked into our room quickly and efficiently, allowing us to rejoin the wedding celebrations in no time at all.

The hotel room, 112, was very tastefully decorated, and had a fantastic ensuite with both a bath and separate shower. All mod cons were in the room, and ensured that we had a very comfortable overnight stay.

As a guest at the wedding, I was very impressed with the service provided throughout the celebrations. The staff at the hotel were always on hand to assist, but never intrusive. The food at the hotel was fantastic, and very well presented and served. As a large wedding party with over 80 guests during the day, this is commendable to ensure everyones meals are piping hot. The evening buffet was plentiful and offered a great selection of both savoury and sweet items.

Breakfast the following morning was again great, plenty of choice from the buffet selection, and then a traditional full English breakfast all cooked to perfection. As many of the wedding guests had chosen to stay at the hotel and come down for breakfast together, the staff had already set tables aside so all of the wedding guests could be seated together, and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before making their journeys.

All in all, a very enjoyable wedding and stay at The Duke, and I look forward to my next visit.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are decorated differently, but all have a great deal of the charater. Some are more...

Old hotel, so expect creaky floor boards and the early 19th century feel, some fittings feel they are that old as well or need a bit of updating?!

I have stayed there many times on business and my preferred Hotel in Plymouth. Small basic rooms are exactly that, small and basic. Large rooms are very nice in deed. Food equally good, this is not five star, if you want 5 star then book a 5 star hotel. But this is a nice and good value. Bar men nice and easy to talk to and bar is open and manned, unlike others where you to wait or go find the bar staff?

Popular with German coach parties, small car park.

Staff very nice and for me, has character which is what I want, something different and not a bland corporate look.

Room Tip: Go for large rooms ;-)

Our room was very small, windows only open 6 inches, very hot indeed. Blankets on the beds and not duvets. We travelled in a group and can only say that the food was not what we had expected on a National Trust holiday. Lift not adequate for a group of our size, only 2 people with suitcases can fit in it - it took us 35 minutes to get to our room. Would I go back to this hotel, never.

Dear Sarahyeovil

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you found the staff to be helpful. I'm sorry that you weren't as happy with your room or food. The lift is on the small side and wasn't an original feature of the hotel when built in 1863. Generally it is adequate for the size of the hotel but at times can mean a little wait for it to arrive. I'm sorry if this caused an issue for you during your stay.

Regards,

P.Adams
