We had a lovely 4 nights stay there in July and the weather was superb. We had the KIPSCOMBE room on the top floor and Karen had fully advised us that this room had only a small bathroom with a shower and no bath, so we knew what to expect. The room was better than we had anticipated and the bathroom was adequate. Otherwise the views and layout of this quite large room was excellent.
Complimentary Wifi in the room worked fine.
We arrived earlier than expected on the Sunday afternoon but the room was available and Mike was very welcoming and made very clear how everything worked and what was offered. We were given a complimentary drink, but were not offered a Devonshire Tea, which we had seen mentioned. Maybe we were too early or this is not provided at the weekend.
The B&B is not cheap but I think it is a fair price for what you get. We normally stay in 3 to 5 star hotels, but appreciate that Highcliffe is a 'Niche'
It is high up and driving is not for the faint hearted, nor is the parking. This could be a barrier for some people.
Again there are not the facilities you have in many hotels, i.e. swimming pools, firness centres, such as the Village Resort Group which are also cheaper as well.
But here you do get a very relaxed ambience. Karen and Mike are both excellent hosts, very informative and it was a pleasure meeting them. Mike again was very helpful in his advice.
The breakfast quality of the cooked food was excellent. The pancakes and bacon such good quality and well cooked. I think the cold buffet section could be improved with say Melon, cheese and may be ham selection.
The rooms are all different, excellent furnished and you can see Mike and Karens attention to detail everywhere.
Breakfast is ready from 8.30am every day until 9.30 am and makes for a relaxing start to the day. May be an 8am start would be beneficial.
We found the other guests very likeable and this together with Mike and Karen all helped to create a really nice homely ambience. It cannot be easy to run a B&B and Mike's personality shows that he likes everything to run 'clockwork', but it does mean you get a first class service, and having read previous comments about Mikes attitude, that only lasted I felt a few minutes from our early arrival and thereafter throughout the stay we had good conversations with him and benefited from his advice on walks etc.
You do need good weather though as the views from here are superb as are the walks. Bad weather could be frustrating.
Would we return?. Yes certainly as I am sure most other guests would.
Look on the website as this is a very good site and accurately describes the rooms. Speak to Karen b...
