“Not worth the trip”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

I have used the Shearings self drive hotels many times over the past few years and this hotel was without doubt the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The room was ok, but, like the rest of the hotel, needs a complete refurbishment. Carpets were worn through on the corridors and the walls and paintwork were all stained. Like in previous reviews, the dining area seemed to be the coldest in the hotel. I cannot fault the staff though, who always seemed to have a smile and a warm greeting.
If you intend going to this hotel, book the car parking space as there are only 6 places available.

Room Tip: Ask it they have had a recent refurbishment

We have had a number of bedrooms refurbished and we will continue to do so.

We have just returned from this hotel, which must be Shearings COLDEST.
Guests were wearing OUTSUDE clothing in the lounge at nights. Whilst our bedroom was warm at night, many older people were complaining that theres was not. We had NO HOT WATER in the shower. Meals were good.

Room Tip: If you want a warm room, and dont mind a COLD shower, choose room 10

Just returned from Lynton, if you are thinking of going there take plenty of warm clothing, the Hotel heating system is totaly inedaquate for the cold weather, the public rooms are freezing, guests using the restaurant were wearing body warmers, fleeces and Top coats. We arrived on Monday evening, there was no hot water and none the next morning. some of the staff are a bit
miserable too probably due to the cold working environment.
That said our sea view room was nice (a large room difficult to warm up) the food was ok and the trips and coach journey was very good.
It must be nice there in the summer.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view room

Stayed here on a five day break in a superior sea view room which was very nice, clean comfortable and a superb view (3rd floor). Good modern bathroom with shower over the bath.

We had excellent service from the restaurant staff who worked very hard and the food was good and served nice and hot. Just one complaint here and that is the temperature in the restaurant - freezing.

The hotel itself must have been a gem in its day but looks a little tired now. I would have given a 'Very Giood' rating instead of 'Average' if our first impressions had been better. The front door really needs a few coats of varnish and the doormat in the entrance was awful. hard as nails. Also staff smoking outside the front door isn't a very good advert for the hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view, it's fabulous.

being totally honest having read some of the reviews i am wondering if they were in the same hotel. my experience started from the front steps when two staff (one serving) watched me struggle with doors and a case up into reception.

now to mention that i do have a mild disability, and perhaps could have called over for assistance but to be fair they all just watched and there was no offer of help. having booked in with the letter i got from shearings hq with all my details on, i was handed a check in form upon which i was asked to duplicate the same information.

my room was 48, at the back of the hotel and up several steps and long corridors. a fellow guest helped by opening doors for me as i made my way through some dreary decorated 1950's looking corridors.

i do appreciate the refurbishment is under way and i am making allowances for the dirt and dust in the various locations not used frequently by guests. i would like to see it after the refurb for comparison.

anyway back to the room, small and a single bed.. fair enough, however the bed sloped, luckily towards the paper thin walls. the room was warm to start with, so i wrongly adjusted the heat control to allow it to cool slightly as it was unbearable. however this was a mistake as the thermostat wouldn't go beyond 18 degrees centigrade. it was later in the evening, i discovered the heating went OFF.. Adjusting it i managed to get to 21c, but by then it was cold. there was a draft in the window and under the door and the bathroom was freezing.

i went down for dinner at 630pm and the head waiter showed me to a 4 place table. i was waited on efficiently and pleasantly and chose the various parts of my meal. I asked if she could get me a drink from the bar as i was unable to carry it. she said yes and disappeared. I ate my starter and just then the head waiter brought over a stranger who was told this was also their table. I thought it a little strange, but accepted it. we started to converse and i learnt he was on a coach from yorkshire while i was an individual self-propelled. i had my main course delivered and then the head waiter brought over a third person who joined the table, also on a coach trip. the common denominator was we were all single travellers... the head waiter popped by and said "you need the wine waiter" and then disappeared again.

i ate my desert and was ready to leave but felt obliged to stay because the other people whom i did not know were still eating.

i never got my drink and left to go to reception to make mention of the dining arrangements. I was told it was normal to put singles together without asking!!!

I was awoken at 1am by the neighbouring room chatting. fair enough, it is a hotel, but i could hear every word. then, at 4am, i was awoke by their snoring!!

i discovered the heating had gone OFF and the room was cold. I went to bed wearing clothes!

i thought i would try a bath in the morning before attending my day of events in the town hall. I ran a whole bath of water (80% full) and was just about to get into it when i discovered it was COLD. I ran the sink, cold.

i had difficulties with the toilet flush. it just wouldn't.

mentioning these to reception the man implied i had not ran the water enough and had flushed it too much. I am not a complete idiot and felt this was a little rude. he said he would investigate the water situation. so, i left without a proper wash and was disappointed because i wanted to soak my back and hip.

the time of breakfast was a little inflexible being 830am, and a rush to get to my event at 915am, not just me but people who were doing coach trips... there was no option for room service or early breakfast/snack. The doors were opened "dead" on time ,not a second before. while our waitress was very efficient she was reliant upon the kitchen for the food. sometimes it was quick, but usually there was a delay (especially the monday when coach people had to go early).

i finally managed a hot bath on the saturday evening more to warm up. the dining area was freezing and as the weekend went on it got colder. on sunday our waitress was on -day off and we felt left out on our table certainly this was noted by the others on the table.

i discovered a 4th person had been allocated to our table but i rarely met him as he did not attend during the early part of the session.

i will not refer to the entertainment, a word i use loosely. I am sure some of the guests would have enjoyed the cheesy DJ asking "where you from?" and then attempting comical humour!! I left at that point.

I am trying to find a positive in this report and to be honest its probably the price; bed, breakfast and evening meal, 3 nights £89.. for what i wanted to do it was cheap as chips,.

Room Tip: room 48 probably similar to other singles, cold!! bring thermals..

Our restaurant manager would have been happy to move you to a table for one, if you had mentioned it at the time.

Just had a self drive weekend which would have been excellent but the room was in need of redecorating .The wallpaper was peeling off the walls and the room was cold because the windows were jammed up with paper to try and keep the draughs out .having said that they were clean. We cannot fault the staff as they were very good all over the hotel and the meals were very good. The scenery around the hotel is very good and there are some excellent walks. There is a bus stop outside the hotel which will take you into Barnstaple .This would have been a excellent weekend if the room had of been better and all the gaps in the windows had been sealed to stop the draughs comimg in
