“magical hotel and breathtaking view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

I loved our time at the Tors, it rained all day, every day (we stayed 4 nights) but the view was still splendid, staff wonderfully happy and helpful and the food good. Our room, 301 had amazing view with a balcony to sit and admire over a glass of wine in the evening, the bed was very comfortable, room clean with new flatscrean TV with DVD player, it did seem a little dated in places (old hairdryer, well worn carpet) but im told that updating is planned as the hotel is under new ownership.

The downstairs is just enthralling, with all the antiques and curiosities, life size sheep statues, gorillas on the roof! the cinema room was a lovely addition (they do a meal and movie night which seemed like a great deal (£11) although we didn’t know about it, before hand but did see others enjoying it) as was the large deck outside the hotel to continue to admire the setting. In the evening when the candles are lit and the lights dimmed the atmosphere was relaxing and cosy as the rain beat down.
I’m looking forward to staying again and would recommend this hotel to friends and family, though the style in the public areas may not be to everyone taste, it is at the very least, unique and interesting with stunning views and very good serivce

The hotel is situated on the side of a hill overlooking Lynmouth and its harbour, which is about a ten minute walk away either down a zigzag path or a rear road (would not advise using the main road that passes the hotel as it does not have a pavement, and traffic does come down the hill at speed). When we arrived we received a very friendly and warm welcome at Reception, and after registering we were shown to our room. The room (115) was situated on the first floor and overlooked the surrounding valley hills of Lynton. However, attached to the room was a small seating area located in a turret from which could be viewed Lynmouth and its harbour. The room was clean, quiet and very comfortable, and had numerous books and novels dotted about. This seemed to be a feature of the hotel as books were located just about everywhere you looked. The public areas were equally cosy and comfortable, and there were spectacular views of the surrounding hills and sea from both the restaurant and terrace. The hotel also offered free national telephone calls, although we never made use of this facility. Those wishing to use the pool would be advised to contact the hotel prior to booking, as it was out of use during our visit. Breakfast was freshly cooked, and was served piping hot. Overall I would highly recommend a stay at the Tors Hotel, or if just passing pop in for a meal or a drink and make the most of the views.

Room Tip: Room 115 has a turreted siting room with views over the harbour and sea

We have just returned from a two-night stay at the Hotel, which is positioned above Lynmouth and so the views - as you can see from the piccies, are rather wonderful - the terrace and restaurant are a fantastic spot for looking out over Lynmouth and the sea, and the sunset that we saw was stunning. The Room was clean and orderly, some of the fixtures are a little dated and it isnt boutique or high-end in that respect, however it was comfortable and pleasant in the room with nice big sash windows and the sounds of watersmeet rivers outside. The lounge areas, restaurant and terrace were very classically old-school hotel style but with lots of bric-a-brac ornaments and tonnes of books everywhere - even in the loos! It wasnt my cup of tea in terms of style but I found it quite endearing and 'eccentric'. Breakfast was satisfactory with an obvious selection of the usual, and the cooked brekkie was good quality and generous. Evening meal was fine - again, what i would expect from this type of hotel.
I was travelling with my very active and crazy 23 month old, but the staff were very accommodating and helpful (except there are tonnes of bowls of toffees all over the lounges which was hard work keeping my daughters hands out of!) Staff were friendly and welcoming. Basically, if you want a Mr and Mrs Smith style boutique hotel then this wont impress you, but if you want somewhere cosy and easy-going whilst visiting this quaint little village then you will not be offended by what is on offer. If you go and hate it then I apologise in advance for leading you astray!? p.s The walk down into Lymouth is via a 5-minute walk down a rather beaten track - not at all viable with a wheelchair or buggy. The only access with buggy or wheelchair is via the extremely steep roadside which has no path and is very unadvisable. So you will need to take your car into Lynmouth from the hotel if you are disabled, with buggies. (my daughter did enjoy the walk via the rugged path but I had to carry her for a good part of it so only do this if you are fit enough). Thanks All, happy travelling!

Room Tip: We had a standard twin room and the hotel supplied a clean and comfortable travel cot too - there wa...

Recently spent the weekend at Tors hotel Lynmouth and I have to say I found my stay to be one of the best hotel experiences ever. The Hotel manager was very pleasant and welcoming and I felt he was very approachable as we're all the staff.

Our room had an beautiful sea view and the hotel in general felt very relaxing and confortable. At night time it had an intimate feel to parts of the hotel, A beautiful new built terrace overlooking the sea and Lynmouth which was fully lit with outdoor heaters and has plenty of seating were we enjoyed a drink at night and an outstanding meal in the day.

The chef cooked & prepared first class food which everybody I had spoken to at the hotel had mentioned how beautiful there meals had been during there stay. The staff throughout the hotel were very pleasant & happy & helpful.

The manager told us there had recently been a lot of work & money invested to get the hotel to the standard it is at now which has clearly paid off, just glad I wasn't staying there whilst the work was being done =)

All in all It's a unique hotel and very relaxing and I highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed for 2 nights using a Livingsocial deal. We we told that the hotel was so busy and fully booked but that they had a superior room available for an extra £40 per night. As this was our only chance to go to the hotel (we don't live in the country) we felt we had no choice but to pay for the upgrade. It was very obvious at dinner and again at breakfast the following morning that the hotel was very quiet, there were approx 10 tables made up for breakfast which is not many considering the hotel is big and it was supposed to be full! I feel we were duped into paying extra due to the cheap deal through Livingsocial!

Overall, eveything was average. Staff were nice but didn't know what each other was doing so we were asked 4 times what drinks we would like to order when having dinner. Food was fine, no complaints. Breakfast was good with a choice of cereals and juices.

Rooms were fine, bed was comfortable, pillows were awful, lumpy and uncomfortable, carpet was quite dirty and tv reception was poor and the tv tilted downwards and didn't move. Bathroom smells a little damp but was clean. The walls between rooms are very thin so be prepared to have to endure their tv drowning out yours and in our case, the guy next door snored ALL night long so our sleep was very disturbed, it was like he was in our room! Best remember earplugs if you stay here!!
The view from the room was fantastic, one huge plus point!
Likewise, the view from the terrace was beautiful, so nice to sit there and have a cup of tea and chill out.
The wi-fi was non existent in the room, you had to go downstairs and sit by the router to get a signal.

The hotel overall was clean, lots to see with the decor, many, many pictures and ornaments. You are not able to put anything on tab so remember your card or have cash to pay for eveything at the end of dinner or if you have a few drinks at the bar.

The Hotel is on the side of a mountain so if you have mobility issues, you will not be able to walk down into the town.

The town itself was lovely, great cafes, lovely shops and breathtaking viewsof the coast.
Lots of great walking routes.

Would I stay at this hotel again? Not likely.

Dear Guest
I am sorry that you felt everything at the hotel was average as we do strive to insure we provide the best service and food possible. We do hope however that your experience at the hotel taken into account your neighbour snored and interrupted your sleep obviously didn't make for a happy start to the day. We would hope to see you at the hotel again and would be pleased to give you one of our superior rooms at our normal standard rate but I can reiterate that when you booked all allocated rooms to living social were occupied hence asking if you would like to upgrade.
Yours sincerely

Purched on the hillside overlooking Lynmounth the hotel has great views. We stayed for two nights and had a great break. The hotels public rooms have been updated and have eclectic decor to say the least and they curtainly catch the eye. The bar is comfertable with bar stools which are always an essential in my view. The food both in the resturant and the bar was excellent as were the friendly staff. The big downside at the moment are the bedrooms which look as if they have been teleported from the 1970's. We were assured that the bedrooms are next on the list for refurbishment which cannot come too soon. Overall a great place to stay and will will be going back.

Room Tip: Not really suitable for people with limited mobility mostly due to its location.

The setting, in mature grounds & woodland high above Lynmouth, is perfect & the architecture allows for wide & generous views of the bay. We stayed there 14th/15th July & I mention this just so the staff on duty that night can be commended, as they were all without exception switched on and delightful to deal with. There were only 2 negatives, so I'll get them over with: the first was the decoration, which is fine if you like OTT theatrical/kitsch, but is a bit of a shock if you read that the owner has something to do with Miller's antique guides, & you are expecting well-arranged good quality pieces. Instead, what you get is a really in-your-face, dense accretion of Chinese repro objects, including giant vases complete with fake craquelure, enormous resin "bronzes" and hideous mass-production "plaster" busts. And poor old Shakespeare looked rather surprised to be perched on a plastic column in the dining room. The other minor complaint is the leaflet in the room advertising gin-based cocktails, which we took to be a kind of cocktail bar menu, only to find that the staff had neither the knowledge nor the ingredients to prepare the drinks & it was in fact an ad for the owner's family's gin products. But now to the positive, which in fact by far outweighed the negatives:

The hotel was spotlessly clean from top to toe. The beds & sofas were really, really comfortable. The food at dinner was absolutely delicious, with a seriously good value accompanying wine list, and the service was unfailingly considerate without being obtrusive. Breakfast (one of us had the full English, another the smoked haddock) was also delicious & enormous, and overall we felt that this hotel was honestly priced & represented really good value. I have mentioned the staff - mostly young & Polish, one young & Portuguese - as they were either total naturals or extremely well-trained, & probably both: we are very impressed. We also took our 12-yr-old with us, and observed younger children in the hotel: the staff were brilliant with them, and they were looked after in other ways, such as in child-friendly menu items & children's books/DVDs in the common areas, and this too was impressive.

Basically, we felt that if only a few of the pretentious edges could be shaved off, this could become what it so clearly aspires to be - a really first-class boutique hotel in a unique setting. In the meantime I'd stay again any time because of the staff, the views, the fantastic food and the honest good value.
