“1,000 places to visit before you die!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

We had been touring Devon without pre-booking hotels. We picked out the Rising Sun from the AA good hotel guide whilst travelling in the car. The food at the hotel has an AA Rosette.

As soon as we see the hotel (possibly better described as an Inn), we liked it. An independent hotel with charm and character. Its position in Lynmouth, overlooking the harbour is wonderful.

We had a room with a window seat overlooking the harbour. The room was quite small and the floor wasn’t level, but that’s the nature of the building and the experience. The room had everything we needed, was clean and well fitted out.

We ate in the restaurant and in the pub. The restaurant food (awarded the AA Rosette) was excellent.

Sometime after our stay, my wife was looking through her book, 1,000 Places To Visit Before You Die and she found the Rising Sun. Amazing! And, another place ticked off.

Room Tip: Harbour view is a must

Very pleasant stay at the Rising sun, we arrived to a very warm welcome and were allowed our room early which was great. The room ( 3) was very small, but adequate, very nicely decorated and our view was great of the harbour. The only down side to our room, was the ensuite was tiny and had no bath. The meal in the evening was fantastic and well recommended even if not staying there.Over all nice, perhaps a little over priced at £100, but then the view and atmosphere was good.

We had been to lynmouth for the day back in 2010 and had lunch in The Rising Sun and thought the food was fantastic! And so decided this year to have a long weekend there and eat every night! So worth it the restaurant is so intimate and cosy the food divine and the sevice just right. Cant wait until next year, the whole resort is an experience in its self, do the cliff walks and walk to waters meet truely memorable for all the right reasons.

Room Tip: Go for room 17 if you like cosy with views and room 12 if you like space.

Checked into The Rising Sun Hotel right in the water in Lynmouth so hard to ask for a better location. The outside of the hotel is an old and ramshackle building with a thatch roof that is obviously a number of buildings joined together.

The landlady provided a very warm and welcoming greeting and took us to our rooms. The trip there was a bit of an adventure with some steep steps and narrow passageways that slanted and creaked as befits a rather old building.

The rooms though we're very nice and comfortable with views out on to the harbour. The bathrooms were well layed out and furnished with a shower and not a bathtub. There was a small amount of mildew in the shower but not terrible.

The beds were clean and comfortable and the television was of good quality. There was coffee, tea and a bottle of water in the room with some biscuits which should be standard but isn't always.

The hotel has free wifi though it was a bit pokey and sparse but it was free.

The pub and restaurant area was very nice with pleasant waitstaff. The proprietors were very friendly and pleasant to chat with.

There were some nice surprising touches like fresh flowers in the sitting room.

The room costs were reasonable and included a very nice breakfast.

While we didn't have a full meal the oysters were great and the food served looked very tempting and smelled wonderful.

If you are looking for a hotel right on the water this is a good choice.

Had a meal here for the 3rd year running and had been really looking forward to returning which has become a highlight of the annual holiday, didn't disappoint - amazing fish dishes in the bar and lovely service in relaxed atmosphere! Would definitely recommend it!

Stayed for just one night B&B with an evening meal. Found this place after just calling in for a pub lunch whilst staying in North Devon. We enjoyed the crab so much we decided to extend the holiday by a day and splash out on an evening meal. The rooms that they allow dogs to stay with you are in the annex next door. The rooms are smaller but perfectly adequate and possibly quieter as you are up the hill a bit more and away from the bar, but still have that fantastic Harbour View. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant area but are fine in the Bar. We just left ours in the car parked right outside whilst we ate a very enjoyable evening meal and for the breakfast in the morning.

The Rising Sun is everything you would expect of an old smugglers' inn. Narrow stairs, sloped rooms and an atmospheric bar. But that's not all: rooms are comfortable and well-equipped (though ask if you want a proper shower, as soom have baths only) and the dinner was simply delicious. Staff are very friendly, and breakfasts excellent. The Inn overlooks the sea and has nearby forest walks, as well as being close to the Victorian funicular railway up to Lynton. A real gem of a Devon inn - our only regret was that we just had one night.

Room Tip: If you prioritise a shower over a bath, ask.
