“Great Pub Food, Unique Menu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Quaint pub, great regional draft beer selection. Unique menu with chef specialities, fish, meat dishes and some very unique creative desserts. Not the traditional pub food. Waiter was friendly and helpful.

“Nice traditional pub but think we caught food on an off day!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

I have often had a drink at this pub, and it is everything, in terms of a nice backstreet pub, that other reviewers have said. But our recent experience was not good. We went on a Sunday when the downstairs restaurant is shut - so sat upstairs in the back area. It was a really hot day and the place was stifling - only one fan in the main bar - so we basically cooked - which is not a great way to eat a meal!

The menu seemed overly fussy - beetroot soup with an egg in it - which was basically cold liquisided beetroot and a half a boiled egg! Our pate type starter was very salty - as was the pork we ordered for main course and the corn bread which came with it was really stodgy. The duck with orange and chocolate gravy didn't quite hit the mark either. My poached salmon with tapenade would have been nice but it was swimming in a milky sauce - the green salad was totally drenched in oil...so I just couldn't eat it. All the flavours just didn't come out in the dishes and the only main course which was ok was the rib eye steak, oh and the chips were good! Puddings were offering salt and pepper as accompaniments and the strawberries with black pepper and mint - were erm....interesting! The poached pear was ok but a bit bland and the selection of cheeses were not good - only the brie was tasty the others just hard and didn't seem particularly fresh.

All in all not a great meal by any standards - even my glass of Shiraz was really vinegary.. and four £125.00 for four - with not bottle of wine - pretty pricey. Sadly, won't return to eat at all or drink, if it is a really hot day!

“a little out of the ordinary”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

Have been here a few times when in Exeter for lunch and not surprised it's a favourite with many of the people who work nearby. It still has an old world feel but the menu is imaginative and varied as well as being reasonably priced. Often have to ask what some of the dishes are (obviously don't watch enough celebrity chefs on TV) but have never been disappointed. Great range of wines by the glass from Italy, Spain, France, Argentina etc as well as fine range of whiskeys. Good choice of real ales too. Love the bread (+ olive oil, sea salt and pepper) to nibble before the main dish arrives - nice touch.

“Best Pub in Exeter and the meanest Bloody Marys!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Great atmosphere with an eclectic mix of customers. Great service, steak and chips with horseradish creme fraiche, melt in the mouth tomato with home made chips, so good I can never choose anything else. Wine list good, beers and Rums and Whiskys you've never heard of but will remember. Always guarenteed for a good night out.
