“Lovely view but eyewateringly expensive for what it is.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

We arrived on a hot Thursday evening two J2Os and I was almost £5 lighter. Sitting outside lovely location, Swans and signets on the water. Somewhat spoilt by some clumsy rowers who seemed to feel it ok to rest their oars on the path, almost tripping up one patron who was already standing there and getting too close to the Swans and their young, causing one of the adult birds to try and see the craft off. Food over proceed for what it was £9.95 for egg and chips! no way would I pay that. Settled for cheesy chips as not that hungry, my companions had chilli chips. Had not visited there in over a decade and unlikely to go again. The glasses were plastic and pretty scruffy, guess that is a sign of the times.

“Still great!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

My first visit to Double locks was way back in 1985 when I was a young student. I remember being very impressed at the range of real ales, the fantastic food (they had a reputation for amazing steaks and garlic bread which consisted of an entire loaf, sliced and stuffed with butter and garlic - delicious!).

I've been a regular ever since and yes, things have changed... but hasn't everything? Firstly, it's a great deal more popular than it used to be and with a surge in demand (coupled with the usual garbage now required about food legislation etc) the food on the menu has changed, but it's still varied, well cooked and reasonably priced! Where else could you get a super pub meal, in great grounds right next to the canal, with ample parking right outside?

The one thing that hasn't changed, to my mind, is the quality of the service! Yesterday evening all the staff were friendly, chatty and efficient! The young chap serving food all of us seated outside couldn't have been more considerate!

Still one of the nicest places to eat in the south west!

“Great location but over priced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013 via mobile

It's in a perfect spot by canal with huge childrens play area, volleyball, marquee, games, BBQ, tables and hot food. It's a shame
though as all food and drink is expensive. Great day out for family fun especially if you come by kayak. Could be slightly cleaner too- tables
Left with mess and food on for ages after meal was finished.

“DISGUSTING - wouldn't give ANY stars!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

Just wanted to share my experience of a recent visit to the double locks pub. Exeter EX2 6LT. I'll try not to bore you rigid, but have to tell it exactly how it was. While walking along the canal, 2 weeks ago with Benson, we stopped off for a spot of lunch. Benson was off his lead (as were at least a dozen other dogs). Benson was playing happily and calmly, with several dogs. In and out of the canal, rolling in the grass, having a really great time. Anyway.....after 20 minutes, a couple turned up with 2 spaniels. They kept 1 of the spaniels on a lead and let the other one join in the doggy play. All was fine until they let the 2nd dog off his lead, then all hell broke loose. In no time at all the 2 spaniels were fighting, and I mean proper fighting!! All the other dogs, besides Benson, dispersed. Benson was evidently worried by this sudden occurrence, but as Darren and I were sat right next to where it was happening, he had no reason to run anywhere. Everything that followed was completely mind blowing: The spaniels dad (who had gone in the pub for a drink) came running out and shouted to us ''your f****** dog has bit mine, he's bleeding'', it took me at least 10 seconds to realise he was talking to me. His dogs had fought each other for all to see (in a packed beer garden with lots of witnesses), but for some unknown reason, he wanted to believe that Benson had caused his dogs injury. I was in total disbelief. As I'm sure you can imagine, voices were raised, not to mention tempers. It was at this point the landlady of the pub came out, stood there in the middle of the beer garden and shouted ''excuse me guys, but the GSD needs to be put on a lead, now''. Of all the people in that beer garden, only one lady stood up to defend Benson. She was almost as furious as we were. She pointed out that Benson had been nothing but delightful, and that the only dogs fighting were the spaniels. The landlady's response ''I don't care, he's too big to be running around''. Needless to say we left immediately, and will never frequent this establishment again, ever!!!!

“I agree with another poster that the Double Locks we used to know and love has 'losts it's way'.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

Although there is still an excellent selection of real ales for which it had become a 'must visit' place, things have detiorated.
Plastic glasses, overpriced food, very few homemade specials as of old and what was on offer was not of particularly good quality.
Stay away.
