“Hounded out”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

My 2 daughters & I stayed here as one of daughters had a client to visit. Not very welcoming, dirty, unhelpful, but have stayed in worse. First morning we came down had adequate breakfast, then going out the day, asked if heard noise overnight, no we didn't. On our journey to Torquay had phone all from owner of hotel accusing us of making the noise, complaints from other guests, noise coming from our room at 4.30 am. Screaming, arguing, as I was the only person in the room, I was asleep by 10.30 & heard no noise at all, told him to investigate further, rang us again, completely ruining our day saying if we came came back & made a noise we would facethe consequences. Adamant we were the culprits, he said he would not be there when we got back to hotel & would not apologise. I am in my 60's & my daughters are in our midfield 40's & certainly not likely to disturb other guests. We went back to hotel & checked out, feeling bullied & wrongly accused, we were rung the next day to say we hadn't been charged for 2nd night, no apology or recompense for upset caused to us. Perhaps I should have realised what it was like when 2 guests staggered out the door drunk at 5pm in the afternoon. .

On arrival the scent of a gents town centre urinal on a Sunday morning takes your breathe away. Its slightly masked by stale beer and pine disinfectant. However your eyes are drawn to the nicotine paintwork and the plug socket held by parcel tape. As you find your own way up several flights of stairs to your room step back in time to 70 décor that is peeling off and some effort made to paint over holes in the wall. However we find our room (with the coffin shaped wardrobe and the toilet with no door) then exchange rooms with our 60 year old mother with COPD as the stairs leave her in need of medical attention.
After a visit to the local Witherspoons we return to the bar for a night cap. The whole bar screams to a halt as we enter. My sister, mother and I huddle in the corner feeling slightly scared by the female 'Canadian beer wrestling' lookalikes growling in the corner. Retiring to our rooms at 10.15pm with our glass of murky wine and my mother with her pint of milk we climb wearily to bed after a long days travelling.
Low and behold we are approached by the manager /owner the next morning who accuses us of causing a disturbance at 4.30am that morning despite being reassured that we were all fast asleep. Of we went for sightseeing in the beautiful Devon countryside. Alas the manager/ owner twice phones us to say that he had evidence from a frequent visitor that indeed the room with my mother sleeping peacefully had been fighting, screaming and shouting at 4.30am and had been entertaining! He refused to accept that two sisters in their 40's and a 60 year old grandmother with health issues had not been 'raving' in the wee hours and that if noise was made that night 'we would suffer the consequences' This of course spoiled our day out with visions of being tied to the railway line or locked in the bar after closing time!
Hence on return to the Hotel hell - beyond redemption from the hotel inspector - we checked out 'gangster granny in tow'- who, by the way, is tea total and would no more party at 4am and entertain- than marry the Pope - beat a retreat to a safe haven in Sidmouth.
Beware female travellers that don't resemble Canadian bear wrestlers - your presence is not welcome - unless you count the learing 'porn tash' other staff members !

I've stayed at the Great Western on numerous occasions and have never had any complaints- the Rooms are generally small, dated and the place is like a maze to find your way around...but it's a great location right next to the Station, very cheap, has a great bar and the food has always been good, so no complaints.
The Parking is non-existent and it'll never be a quiet place, but the staff are always friendly and have a smile on their faces.
Yes it's not the Ritz, but in a time when all the other hotels in Exeter are bumping up their prices at an extortionate rate, the Great Western remains a reliable place and delivers great value for money in the best location in Exeter for travelling by Train.

This is a hotel that I have used a few times before ... so I knew what I was letting myself in for!! Lets start with the plus point - it is across the road from St Davids railway station and therefore extremely convenient as a journey start/finish point if travelling around the West Country by rail.
Now to the reality - it is a former British Transport Hotel - and appears to have seen little spent on it since those days. Old décor/fittings in the rooms accessed through a "main" entrance that also doubles as the access to the public bar. Have only sampled the English breakfast (adequate) and not even seen the food menu otherwise. Oh and the breakfast serving time is an hour later on a Monday (puts me off staying on a Sunday night).
To sum up the appearance of this hotel in 2 words - "uncared for".

Room Tip: I don't think there are any?

As soon as I arrived I thought, Christ on a bike.
It's an old building in need of desperate repair. It's one of those smelly old pubs you find beside the railway station.
Upon my arrival into reception I was created by a lovely lady. Very pleasent and polite.
As I walked through the hotel to find my room I noticed the musty smell eminating from the pub on the ground floor. The yellow nicotine stains still present on the paint and plastic fittings.

Once I got into my room I found it neat and smell free.
I did my usual inspection to ensure it was clean enough. Looked at the walls, bed, bathroom and toilet.
The bed had eight hairs on the duvet and two pubic hairs on my pillow.
The bathroom and toilet were clean as a whistle.

I chose not to complain, as in my experience, if you find a curly one in one bed then most likely you will find one in another.

I chose to go and drown my sorrows in the bar, £3.95 for a pint, and was greated by a small bar surrounded by locals. Not the overly friendly welcome locals but the defensive "this is our bar" type. I shoved my way to the bar and asked for my drink, the girl behind the bar was polite and pleasent.
I chose my seat in the back corner so I could see any bar stools coming ny way.

I stay in many types of hotels all over the country. This place I found to be old, out dated, smelly and in need of a refurb.
I would not stay here again when I return to the area.

This room was booked by my company for a business trip. I also had a colleague staying in another room. We both recommend anyone thinking of booking not to bother. We have reported how bad it was to the company booking department so no one else has to stay here. The room smell of damp. The carpet was ripped. There were tiles missing in the bathroom. The grouting was black. The bathroom was so small they have put the sink in the bedroom. The shower attachment was on the side wall so did not cover you, I had to hold it over my body to was. The door to the bathroom was a sliding door which would not close due the the ripped carpet. There was no headboard for the bed. The sheets were so old they were yellow, not white. The corridors are not well lit. And why anyone presents a chopped up fried egg as a scrambled is beyond me.

Room Tip: Chose another hotel
