“Modern Comfortable stylish hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Well my girlfriend and I were staying here as we had an award ceremony to attend at the museum in Exeter. The hotel is wonderfully located for visits to Exetere City Centre.
The hotel is a grand looking place and certainly has that wow factor. We were greeted my friendly staff and lovely open fire places with roaring fires.
The reception area is a little different as it consists of a laptop which friendly staff pull out when requesting to check in.
A complimentary IPad was given to us and we had great fun using their playlist of various music whilst getting ready. Having music whilst in the bath or shower is always a good thing.
The room we had also had various electronic light setting, welcome and night mode were the ones we generally used but again a nice touch to have.
Nespresso machines with more than enough coffee pods were also offered as well as the usual tea tray.
The hotel and bedroom had complimentary REN products and these really are of a very high standard.
The room was very comfortable and would please both business and leisure customers.
The Lounge and library with it vast collection of books are very relaxing and the whole place has some very interesting art. These new pieces of art mised with the old building certainly works.
The Bar is small but again has a good selection of drinks and cocktails. It also has a lovely open fire.
The food here is first class. The head chef has won numerous awards and it clear why he has. We had Lunch at the hotel and for any foodies out there I can highly recommend the Lunch menu. The dinner menu also looked rather Bon too!
The hotel also has a spa and a lovely swimming pool.
This hotel really would please a wide range of clientele due to the wide range of facilities on offer.
I highly recommend this hotel and if you're treating a significant other half then I really do not think you can go wrong.
I just want to try the Cheltenham one now!

Room Tip: The superior rooms (3rd floor) have great balconys over looking the City

We stayed for one night midweek. Check in was efficient yet relaxed in a dedicated lounge area accompanied by a complimentary glass of warming mulled apple juice which was delicious! The hotel is very welcoming with open fires burning in the grate and lots of design features. The rooms are well equipped, if perhaps a little on the small side, but the Nespresso machines, complimentary use of iPads and dressing gowns and slippers are great luxury additions. Housekeeping were really fantastic at promptly providing additional items on request. The swimming pool, if a little small was a nice place to spend time relaxing with the wood burning stove a really attractive feature. Breakfast was freshly cooked order and was enjoyed in the lovely restaurant overlooking the garden. We have stayed in a few places in Exeter but this is definitely one of the best.

We arrived at this wonderfully transformed eye hospital to a very modern clean lined hotel.
Fires lit and people sat around all the fireplaces dotted around the place keeping it warm in the spacious areas.
We had popped in for a coffee, nose around and discuss the Magdelin Chapters Cook Club and the future dates.
A young and very polite gentleman listened to my request and without any hesitation showed myself and my husband around with pride at what the hotel offered. Extremely well presented hotel and the gardens, potting shed, spa and gym looked great as did the fantastic swim outside pool to inside which had lots of steam coming of the pool. There were one or two people taking advantage of the pool and they looked very happy. The lounge sitting areas were well presented as was the library. The restaurant looked busy and well defined and the food being delivered to the guests looked very good and the fabulous soup smelt divine.
We sat in the bar and had a coffee and chatted away to the very professional and interesting guy that showed us around. He provided us with all the info we requested and more and we decided we were coming to stay for a weekend as soon as we could. There is a lot going on in the hotel to keep you amused and it has a great deal to offer, I really recommend looking at the website to suit what you wish to do from a cooks demonstration, to a jazz afternoon tea, to a proseco evening, to all sorts!!
The staff are testament to a hotel and here they seem to have a great bunch of people working where nothing is to much trouble and all done with a smile. Thank you for making our coffee break so enjoyable and we will see you soon.

Arrived very tired after long journey searching for an hotel not sure if sign meant if it was an hotel or not.Couldnt find reception turned out to be a laptop on a table !
However friendly casual staff soon put us at ease.We were a little shocked at prices but worth it for the experience.Lovely spacios comfortable room.Ipap provided for room service and hotel services..Minibar (limited) WiFi and newspaper included as was wonderfull luxourious breakfast.Possible to enjoy swim in hot outdoor pool even in deapths of winter.
All this in historic building of which we are reminded by original plaques.

Brilliant. All the staff do everything they can to help you - they will never really say no if they can help it. We were complimentary upgraded from Superior to Deluxe when we arrived, given an iPad to use for our stay and shown to our amazing room! Had a huge bath in the middle of the bathroom, heated mirror with lights, nespresso machine, complimentary mini bar, mood lighting settings and the biggest most comfortable bed ever!
Dinner was lovely too we both had the rib eye steak. Pool is great - ceiling lights up and has a wood burner inside the pool room. Very close to all the shops and we actually just got the train to Exeter central and walked to the hotel as it wasn't far at all. Great experience the whole hotel is decorated perfectly - great atmosphere. FYI if you are eating and stayin make sure you book for the restaurant in advance and book in for treatments at the spa well before you go!

Nicely converted old eye hospital which as others have commented retains an institutional feel in places but this isn't a major issue. Paid £95 night for single room which good value as includes free wi-fi (good to see), free minibar, use of iPad, brekfast and a paper. Downside is room is very small - around 8 feet wide and a little claustrophobic as is the bathrooom. However if you don't plan to spend any time except for sleep in it it is OK.
Good friendly service from young, cheerful staff throughout.
Dinner at restaurant was good - good menu and wine list in contemporary setting.
Overall, highly recommended.

Room Tip: Avoid the single rooms if you are planning to spend any time there.

Recently came here for an evening meal with friends, and the food was superb. However what I found most refreshing was the knowledgable staff and excellent service, which explains the slightly higher price tag, but worth every penny! Will return!
