“A simply moronic approach to customer service!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2011

To sum up our terrible experience it’s important to tell the entire story. We are 14 professional men, who travelled down from London to play a memorial football match. Having stayed the previous year for the same event the hostel owners were fully aware that we were going out for a few drinks on Friday and Saturday night. We paid a £280 security deposit for any damages and unfortunately on the first night a bunk bed was damaged and we agreed to lose £80 of our deposit. Also one of our party couldn’t find his room and by mistake knocked on the wrong door which resulted in him being rudely shouted at by the owner for knocking on the female dorm door. During Saturday day time we had a very aggressive phone call from the hostel owner complaining about the noise that was made when some of us returned in the early hours and his words regarding the lad knocking on the wrong door was quote “the lad who was knocking on the all the dorm doors was lucky I didn’t knock him out!”
I can assure you that at no point did any of our party show any signs of aggression towards any member of staff or other hostel resident! The only aggression was that shown by the hostel staff and I think the way they spoke to us was totally unacceptable. After apologising for the noise we thought our problems were solved… we were wrong.
9am Sunday morning, whilst our entire room were asleep a hostel staff member burst into our room screaming at us about the noise we made and how much of our deposit he was going to take! The telling off we received resembled that of a 1950’s headmaster and was a total embarrassment. We are all reasonable people and we would hold our hands up to any noise and mistakes our party made, but that does not give the staff the right to speak to us and treat us in this way. After explaining this was no way to talk to anyone we returned to our room to collect our things when we had a knock at the door and two police officers came in to escort us off the premises. This was totally unwarranted and a complete waste of police time as at no point were we aggressive or threatening – the only aggression and threats coming from the staff.

Not a single member of the hostel staff deserves a job in customer service! A total joke; stay here at your peril!

what a big and spacious room! thanks for the breakfast-tip. The breakfast at George's Meeting House was fantastic. It was very calm at night - this was very comfortable. The Globe Backpackers is situated in the near of the city wall and the shopping mile Princesshay. The bathroom was clean and also the room.

We reserved a six-person dorm. Five of our friends, including myself, arrived together; the person at the front desk was very understanding about the sixth person showing up later that evening, promptly checked us in and gave us our keys. The staff was extremely helpful in recommending places to eat nearby, helped me when I managed to lock myself out of our dorm at one point, and struck up casual conversation with us. After our stay in a cramped London hostel room, we were so relieved to find a spacious, clean dorm with a window! Also, the wifi Internet here was free!

If I had to pick out something that could use improvement, it'd be the showers - tiny, hot water only, and had to keep pressing the knob for water (which I understand is for conserving water). Overall, though, this was possibly the best accommodations we had during our England trip! Great job, Global Backpackers, and hope to stay here again someday. =)

I agree that it was very difficult to find the Globe backpackers. After wandering around for quite some time, I had to take a taxi to finally get there.
The room was very basic but I think there was enough room to accommodate all the guests. The showers worked and the toilets were clean. I would say that it's very basic place to stay but with 15 pounds/night you can't really expect anything too fancy. I had a good night's sleep and enjoyed trip to Exeter.

Not a pleasant experience. For a start, it was very difficult to find as the street doesn't appear to be signposted and changes it's name for just a single city block. Exeter's streets are a maze as well.

Once I arrived though, I was shown up to the dorm room which had one dingy light - the other being out and not replaced. The whole place looked as though no-one could be bothered. The best part was that I was only staying there for one night.

Good location, niceplace, but noisy over night because of the main route next to the hostel.
