To sum up our terrible experience it’s important to tell the entire story. We are 14 professional men, who travelled down from London to play a memorial football match. Having stayed the previous year for the same event the hostel owners were fully aware that we were going out for a few drinks on Friday and Saturday night. We paid a £280 security deposit for any damages and unfortunately on the first night a bunk bed was damaged and we agreed to lose £80 of our deposit. Also one of our party couldn’t find his room and by mistake knocked on the wrong door which resulted in him being rudely shouted at by the owner for knocking on the female dorm door. During Saturday day time we had a very aggressive phone call from the hostel owner complaining about the noise that was made when some of us returned in the early hours and his words regarding the lad knocking on the wrong door was quote “the lad who was knocking on the all the dorm doors was lucky I didn’t knock him out!”
I can assure you that at no point did any of our party show any signs of aggression towards any member of staff or other hostel resident! The only aggression was that shown by the hostel staff and I think the way they spoke to us was totally unacceptable. After apologising for the noise we thought our problems were solved… we were wrong.
9am Sunday morning, whilst our entire room were asleep a hostel staff member burst into our room screaming at us about the noise we made and how much of our deposit he was going to take! The telling off we received resembled that of a 1950’s headmaster and was a total embarrassment. We are all reasonable people and we would hold our hands up to any noise and mistakes our party made, but that does not give the staff the right to speak to us and treat us in this way. After explaining this was no way to talk to anyone we returned to our room to collect our things when we had a knock at the door and two police officers came in to escort us off the premises. This was totally unwarranted and a complete waste of police time as at no point were we aggressive or threatening – the only aggression and threats coming from the staff.
Not a single member of the hostel staff deserves a job in customer service! A total joke; stay here at your peril!
