“Perfect Hotel for Exeter”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2014

From our secure parking, kind reception staff and lovely room near the lift as requested this hotel came up trumps. This was probably the best city centre hotel we have ever stayed in.. Not just UK but also abroad

Our quiet large room had a fantastic large bed ( actually two three footers linked together ) Sleep quality was outstanding. After busy sightseeing days the room was large enough to relax, read, make hot drinks or cold from the frig or watch a good size flat screen television..

The pool water was a great temperature. I though the rope to separate families from more serious swimmers at the weekend a good idea. The spa facilities was also perfect.. I resisted the gym but had a look at a wide variety of machines etc. Far more than the average hotel.

We had a bar snack on arrival. Good cheerful service at fair prices as were the bar drinks. Breakfast was very generous with a big range of anything and everything that anyone could wish for. A minot criticism was the variety of waiters and waitresses so that one did not create a regular report with any individual.
.

Room Tip: ask for a top flloor room near the lift and facing the cathedral. Best for the views and quietist.

The hotel is ideally located, near to the Cathedral Close. Upon our arrival, the staff on the front desk were very welcoming and helpful. The hotel is smartly decorated (if a little too gaudy in the communal areas for my own taste) with a nice bar area and the room was of a decent size and clean. A key positive was that the bed was wonderfully comfy. The bathroom appeared to be clean but could have been finished off better - there were water marks in the shower, cleaning product residue on the loo seat and the bathroom did not smell particularly pleasant. We believe the shortcomings in attention to detail in the bathroom could in part be due to the swiftness with which the rooms are cleaned (ours had been done while we were still at breakfast).

At breakfast, a wide selection was on offer (a cold and hot buffet in addition to a menu). A key point of frustration for me was the time it took to attract a waiter's attention to place my order. It looked to be a very busy Easter weekend for the hotel and I think it would have been beneficial to have more staff on duty at breakfast.

All in all, we had a pleasant stay and the hotel offers good value for money so i would stay again if in Exeter in the future.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your positive feedback following your recent Easter break. We are pleased you enjoyed so many aspects of your stay.
I have emphasised the need for attention to detail to the Head Housekeeper who will share this with her team.
We are glad you would like to visit us again next time you visit Exeter.
Kind regards Fiona Darde

Excellent stay. Staff were superb. Breakfast excellent. We were lucky to be given a suite on arrival, which enhanced our stay. The sauna and pool very good. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant, which was good and not too expensive. Great location for access to City Centre and Quay. Could not fault the hotel and will definitely return.

This was our second visit - as a couple with our 5 year old twins. We were as impressed this time as last - the hotel is great and the staff service impeccable. We used the pool facilities in the evening and the following morning, which we all really enjoyed. My husband and I had a snack in the bar in the evening (food and drinks are a little on the pricey side but in line with the quality of the hotel) and we all had a wonderful breakfast in the morning which is free for the children! My only concern was that the room was too hot and I couldn't work the heating - but I could have called reception and asked. We'll definitely be back!

We've stayed here many times en route to/ from Cornwall and in the main we've always had a lovely stay; this time was no exception. We had a fantastic superior room; nice and quiet; king size bed and free wifi (yeah!); although free wifi should be standard in all hotels these days!:); PLEASE! :).

It's got a g8 gym and pool and great for shopping as it's so central, right by Exeter Cathedral and all cafes and restaurants within easy reach; so, really convenient. So, highly recommend! well done Southgate!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the car park are quieter.
