“Got a car, BEWARE !!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

After an initial problem with being able to check in (not on the system) and having to wait in reception for 45 mins although i was offered" the chance to sit in the lounge " not so much as a glass of water though, the booking was found and I was able to go to my room. Which was actually very nice.
On checking out in the morning I was surprised to say the least that I had to pay £10.00 for a token to exit the car park in a very matter of fact way.I questioned this but to no avail.
Now if this is the hotel policy fair enough, but perhaps if this was advertised on the hotels website
it would be more acceptable and we could make a more informed choice of room rates!!
I have emailed my thoughts to the Hotel, but obviously do not qualify for a reply

Dear Guest
Thank you for your review.
I am sorry to learn that there was a problem with your reservation on arrival to the hotel, and agree I would have expected the team to offer you complimentary refreshments whilst investigating the matter with the booker.
I note your comments regading car park charges; chargable car parking is listed on the mercure website and clearly signed on the entrance to the car park but we will endeavour to make the charges more noticeable to avoid any other confusion. We charge for parking as we are the only hotel located in the heart of the city centre with large secure, lit car parking facilities. Parking the the city centre is limited and expensive.
I would be grateful if you would resend your email to fiona.darde@accor.com as we do not appear to have received any personal correpondance relating to car parking from you.
Kind regards
Fiona Darde

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

Stayed here for one night at the beginning of June. We chose it for the pool and jacuzzi and they did not disappoint. Everything was lovely and clean and the room (classic) was large with all the usual amenities. Very close to the cathedral and lots of restaurants to choose from. The only downside was that there was a wedding reception taking place in the hotel and the guests had been very 'unwell' in the bar toilets and this was not cleaned for some time - this is why i have rated it a 4 not a 5. The breakfast room was lovely and served the usual fare - only wish i had noticed the menu before indulging in the buffet as they do eggs benedict freshly made to order. Overall would recommend to anyone staying in Exeter.

Room Tip: we were in room 272 which was very quiet and comfortable

Dear Guest
Many thanks for your review following your recent stay with us.
It is a pleasure to hear you found the hotel well located and enjoyed the facilities in the leisure club.
I note your comments regarding the guest cloakrooms and will share this with the Duty management team to ensure they check the cloakrooms more regularly throughout the evening. I'm sorry you missed out on your Eggs Benedict, I'll ensure that the breakfast explain the options more clearly going forward.
We hope to welcome you back to the hotel again soon.
Kind regards

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

We stayed early June and received excellent discount on rate by booking over 30 days in advance.
The Southgate is a lovely relaxing hotel. High quality and service but not stuffy in a ny way.
Service from reception was excellent from the moment we called for directions on our journey into Exeter and throughout the check-in . We were made to feel very welcome.
The location is excellent for a pleasant stroll to the Cathedral green and all the restaurants, pubs shops etc.
We would definately stay again and would not hesitate to recommend to friends.
Car parking was very good with plenty of spaces and secure. Charged at £10.00 per 24hrs.
The only reason I have marked down the service score, is due to the breakfast service. The breakfast room had obviously been very busy before our arrival, a coach party I think, and the room was very messy with uncleared tables. We waited in the lounge for a table to be laid and we were given a very nice table next to the window.
However, they then placed a family so close to us you couldn't sit comfortably .
This was despite the rest of the tables all being vacant ! A little inconsiderate.
I also had to go and find a waiter to take our hot food order.
The kippers were delicious, the haddock .....a tiny tail end portion which you would probably put in fish cakes or the cat ,if preparing at home !
Breakfast was OK for an inclusive rate. I would have been disappointed if I had paid £15.50 each.
However, the overall experience was excellent and I would look forward to staying here in the future.

Recently held a Summer ball at the hotel for 70 people. The evening went without a hitch and all the guests had a fantastic time and said the food was amazing, the staff were brilliant and couldn't help out enough. I would definitely recommend the venue. The only comment from our guests was that the drinks were a bit expensive, but i think thats what you come to expect from hotel prices.

We stayed over on our way to Cornwall and will be booking again for the return visit. Our only comment would be that the room we was given was a long walk from reception, this was a disabled room as requested due to my husbands current illness which makes it difficult to walk long distances. The facilities in the pool area were very good as there was proper steps into the pool which meant we could both have as swim.

Dear Malinda

Thank you for your recent review on Trip Advisor following your recent stay with us, I am pleased to hear you enjoyed your time with us.
I am sorry to learn your found the accessible rooms a little far from Reception; they were incorporated into the hotel when it was extended in 2008 so are slightly further from reception than we would wish in a ideal world. I do hope this did not cause your husband too much discomfort.
I'm pleased to hear that you found the pool to be accessible enabling you to both enjoy the facilities.
We hope to welcome you back to the hotel in the near future.
Kind regards

We stayed for one night at this hotel. The hotel itself is lovely. Rooms are very clean and well maintained. We had an evening meal which was very good and then spent the rest of the evening in the bar. We were really well looked after by Michael and Katie in the restaurant and then Joshua and Tom in the bar. This hotel would be great for both long and short stays.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 376. Was nice but no view :)

We have stayed as a Family on a few occasions with several other friends in the last year. The kids love the pool, the front desk team are extremely polite and the rooms each time we visit have been re-vamped with new bathrooms and classy modern interior designs. I have now spoken the Hotel Manager at Southgate Exeter now about our breakfast experience which is 100% fanastic with the exception of the older lady who is supervising the Breakfast experience. We bumped another school family from London who were taken a back at breakfast. We have now asked Management to do something about the breakfast especially for all those newly-weds who want to be treated like princes and princesses the morning after their big event! A small change can be a big change for everyone in the breakfast dining area, you will transform the atmosphere completely to a positive charming experience which is what the customer wants!
