“The real character of Dartmouth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

Unusually travelling without our dog Winston, my wife and I stayed for four nights on our own at Charity House on the recommendation of good friends who had been there recently. We were not disappointed. This is a beautiful little house, full of the character of the town, and stuffed with interesting little knick-knacks, paraphernalia, pictures and old photographs (the owner, Val is a keen collector of all sorts of interesting objects). Perfectly situated in the little square overlooking the church, it is a quiet haven, close to the centre of things but peaceful and quiet at the end of a day.

The welcome and personal care shows Val's many years of experience in this business. The room was delightful, prettily furnished and with a separate sofa on which to sit in the evenings with the television instead of having to lie on the bed with a cricked neck. Why can't more B&Bs sort this sort of thing out? Another wonderful touch was the small fridge with fresh milk. Such a lovely change not to have to stomach the ubiquitous little tubs of UHT rubbish!

The breakfasts were amazing! All locally-sourced fresh produce, perfectly cooked and served to perfection - even if you don't usually eat sausages with your breakfast, I can highly recommend the ones served here - not to be missed. Val is a source of really useful information about things to do and places to eat during the day and she tailors these to the individual needs of her guests.

Everything in Dartmouth is cost-inflated beyond belief and the local pubs and restaurants seem to see tourists as easy pickings. Val is clearly setting her price according to the undoubted popularity of Charity House and the general cost of supplies locally. This is my polite way of saying I thought that the tariff is just a tad high for a guest house!

Nevertheless, I cannot recommend Charity House highly enough. Val has a core of regular guests who return again and again. I reckon that Lorna and I may well be joining that group! Thank you so much for making our stay in Dartmouth so comfortable - see you again hopefully.

Room Tip: We were in Room 1 at the back of the house, overlooking the rooftops of the town - very comfortable...

For the warmest welcome in the West, look no further than Charity House, Dartmouth, which is run by Val Birchly and her husband. The breakfasts are outstanding, and the facilities were splendid.

My husband and I returned from a seven night stay at Charity House on 13 July and wish we could go straight back tomorrow. This is a charming b & b, the location excellent, central and convenient for the river & town. The breakfast is delicious, beautifully presented & a real treat,Val's muesli pots and home made marmalade with ginger are particularly recommended.Val & Martin are warm & friendly hosts, but never overwhelming & their little dog, Alfie, is a real sweetheart who knows where he is & is not permitted access. Val has a real"eye". I loved her style. There are so many considerate extra touches, a delightful sitting area in our room, a fridge with a bottle of milk which was replaced before it was empty, pretty china cups and saucers, a gift box of yummy Devon fudge and lovely fresh garden flowers. The linen & towels were changed frequently & a lit bedroom lamp made a welcoming return after a day out & about.I highly recommend this b & b as one which goes the extra mile & all at a very reasonable price. .

We spent two nights staying at Charity House in April 2012 and were delighted with our time there. The rooms have beautiful decor (lovely vintage feel) and lots of little extra touches that make you feel really at home. Lovely breakfasts that set you up for the whole day and the friendly owners have lots of local information and ideas for what to do while you are in the area. A great find, reasonably priced and perfect for a relaxing break by the sea.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 1 which was bigger than room 2 (but both were lovely)
