“Beautiful hotel in a lovely location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2010

This is a very nice hotel with extremely friendly and attentive staff, and it's in a beautiful location. My wife and I stayed for two nights in Early May for our wedding anniversay and had a wonderful time. It is expensive, but worth it for that special occasion.

What a let down,

Car parking is tedious, you couldn't swing a cat (or anything else for that matter) in the tiny room - rah rah receptionist who held pointless conversations at full volume (she kindly pointed out we would have got a bigger room had we booked earlier) and a restaurant that may as well had bench seats and communal tables, because we all shared each others conversations whether we wanted to or not. The hotel was absolutely baltic when we first arrived and the windows are thrown open to allow the Souwesterlies to come screaming in by the housekeeping staff every day.

The Tresanton food couldn't compete for quality with the other foodie delights of Cornwall - The John Dory was tough enough to sole your boots - looked very pretty on the plate though - considering we had exactly the same type of fish the night before at Porthgwidden beach cafe (St Ives) - the comparison was not flattering for the Tresanton kitchen.

On the upside the service in the dining room was professional and elegant, the communal areas are stylishly decorated and the views across the bay are good.

Not worth the money

The best views and the friendliest service you can get. We arrived in the rain and two valets met us with umbrellas. The took us to the room, brought in the luggage and parked the car. We had a lovely room (28) with a fantastic view over the sea. The bed was big and comfortable with a lovely luxury bathroom. The restaurant was a short walk away as was the bar. The food was superb although the portions were not large. On the last morning it was finally warm enough to have breakfast on the terrace. The breakfast is perfect and the views from the terrace are stunning - if only it had been a bit warmer. Tresanton is just lovely and if you are thinking of going you should!

My wife and I stayed here the night of my Birthday, it was an impulse stay as our holiday in Japan had been cancelled due to the Icelandic Volcano eruyption and the air travel chaos.

We loved the place and will return again soon we hope. the quality of service and food was top notch. Our only dissapointment was that the hotel yacht was unavailable for hire.

Trust me go you wil not be dissapointed.

I love Tresanton - we have stayed there 4 times now and it is always reliably perfect. St Mawes itself is a wonderful place, with plenty of very good walks (get the tiny Place Ferry from the quay for one of the best).

The decor is effortlessly stylish, every room is different but think New England chic - tongue and groove, muted Farrow and Ball colours, beautiful bathrooms, fossilized ammonites...

The restaurant is also brilliant - probably in the top 3 in Cornwall - fresh fish and local produce with great service and a very good wine list. If you are lucky and it is sunny (more often than not in St Mawes) then you can sit out on the terrace and gaze across the sea to the lighthouse on the next headland with a cup of tea or something stronger. Delicious breakfasts too.

They have loads of pairs of Wellies for trekking through the ubiquitous Cornish mud (Navy Hunters stacked in a stylish shelving unit of course) and a lovely communal sitting room with newspapers and a roaring fire in the colder months. There is also a really nice bar on the lower level.

They also cater for events very well - we had my father's 60th birthday party there a couple of years ago and it was definitely a weekend to remember. We love the place so much we looked at it for our wedding, but you have to hire the whole hotel for the weekend (or you did then) which we thought was prohibitively expensive - but I can see why they do that - it is quite an intimate space so other hotel guests would no doubt feel the place was completely taken over by a wedding.

It is the kind of place that gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling when I think about it - and also makes me want to up sticks and leave London for the South West...

My wife and I stayed here for three nights last week and this is the first time that we have felt moved to both write a letter of thanks to a hotel after returning and to post a review on the internet.

It is hard to single-out the one thing that made the whole experience so enjoyable. The hotel was exceptionally comfortable, clean and tidy, the food was marvellous and the rooms so well-appointed.

Perhaps the one thing worthy of mention above all, though, is just how well we were looked-after. All of the hotel staff were wonderfully attentive from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. We always had the distinct impression that our enjoyment and relaxation was their principal concern. It was a lovely feeling.

No hotel can offer a guarantee of complete satisfaction, of course, but it is almost impossible to imagine anyone not enjoying their stay here.

We look forward to returning soon.

My friend and I stayed at the Hotel Tresanton for a long weekend in March. It is a really lovely and relaxing hotel. The hotel is very understated, it is not for you if you like
flashy places. I think the understated decor and lovely views are what make it so special. The staff are very helpful, and the food is great. We enjoyed several great walks, and they were kind enough to drive us to where we needed to go as we didn't have a car.

The village of St. Mawes is very charming. I will definitely return to the Hotel Tresanton, and also am looking forward to visiting their sister hotel in Devon. Many 'luxury' hotels could learn a lesson or two from the folks at the Tresanton!

Thanks to everyone at the hotel for a great weekend! Special thanks to the lovely Italian lady who drove us to our lighthouse walk and helped us many other times over the weekend.
