“st mawes is cornwall at its best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

Just returned from a week in st mawes and stayed at the ship and castle hotel one of shearings coast and country hotels we stayed in room 208 and the view of the quay was well worth the room upgrade tariff but on the negative side the bedroom definately needs refurbishing and the bathroom with no heating was freezing and definately had the worst over the bath showers that I have ever tried to use,on the possitive side the hotels lounge areas are very comfortable with great views, the staff do make you feel very welcome and we enjoyed all our meals,as usual we did this holiday on a self drive basis and although the hotel has no car park (they do tell you this in the hotels web page ) we parked just down the road in the large coucil run carpark and found that we could pay a one off fee of £25 for 120 hours one downside is you have to pay in coins so maybe the council could upgrade their machines so that you could pay by card ?.The Victoria inn next door is a great traditional pub with a very friendly welcome with good beers and ciders and a much appreciated log fire.

The food at this hotel was good and varied, a different half-board menu selection every evening and a special dish too, the a la carte was good value if you wanted to upgrade.Sadly the sunday vegetables were over cooked, mushy sprouts ...yuk. The "standard" room was basic but sufficient and clean although the shower was a little small, and we had to ask for shower and hair wash on the subsequant days. Having to remember to book dinner after breakfast was a little awkward, this could have been arranged for the whole trip in one go when we booked in. The only bad thing was our room being above the kitchen and the food smells wafted in and the extractor fan running all day and all night meant with the window open for air we didn't sleep so well. The staff did not speak english as a native language so this led to some restaurant orders being misunderstood, although we had no issues. There is also no onsite parking which was an added expense.

Room Tip: Sea view or premier rooms would be a bonus.

If you want to get away from it all, this hotel, part of the coast and country group, fits the bill.
Due to the location this hotel feels isolated.
Our stay was very good, bedroom comfortable, food reasonable, staff very friendly, to view the quay sit in the lounge, excellent .
We found 2 pubs, both ok, the victoria we thought was the best, we had a coffee at the St Mawes Hotel, also ok.
We caught the ferry to falmouth £9 return, great service, spent a few hours looking round.
Overall we enjoyed St Mawes and our hotel, but we will not be rushing back.

Room Tip: We had room 101, views terrible

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for your comments, it is good to hear that you enjoyed your stay.

I often venture accross to Falmouth and spend hours looking around at the local area, there certaily is plenty to see.

I'm disappointed to read that you won't be rushing back but hope that some of our offers may tempt you!

We have spent what was overall a really good stay at the Ship and Castle.
The staff were friendly and the food excellent. Nothing was too much trouble and this made us feel very welcome.
The location is superb with much going on in and around the small quay. It was great to sit in the lounge area with a coffee or beer and watch the world going by.
We really enjoyed our stay and would come back.
There were however a few negative things that didn't ruin our overall stay but I feel are worth noting.

There is no car park attached to the hotel and it was frustrating having to keep an eye on the clock to go out and pay for more time in the pay and display car park. Not the sort of thing you want to be doing when you want to get away from it all.

Our room was at the back of the hotel where there was no view at all except a wall on two sides.
The door lock on our room door was loose and difficult to open.
There was a very annoying noise from what I believe to be an extractor fan. This went off at about midnight and on again at 5 am.

We booked half board and this was confirmed on our arrival.
We were given a menu for evening dinner. The waiter came to us and took one part away and said something about us being bed and breakfast.
I tried to make the point that we were half board.
The meal came and was superb (no complaints at all).
As we were leaving the next morning I decided to settle our bill which as we were half board only left a small bill for our drinks.
We left after breakfast the next morning after saying goodbye and handing our key in at reception. A few hours later after we had arrived home I had a phone call to say that we had to pay another £28 and that this was for the dinner we had enjoyed the previous evening.
Apparently we hadn't chosen from the half board menu.Presumably this was the menu that the waiter took away from us.
I have settled this bill but feel that this was certainly not made clear to us. I had on several occasions confirmed to the staff that we were half board.

All this is a shame as we had a great relaxing time at the hotel.

Room Tip: Our room (101) at the back of the hotel had the above problems. Still enjoyed our stay here.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review, it is very valuable to hear our guests comments.

I am delighted that you have mentioned the staff, they are an asset to us. I will ensure they get to see your comments. Our Head Chef Suzie will also be very pleased, her and the kitchen team work very hard.

I will investigate your constructive comments, but would like to note that charges for "supplement" items are clearly labelled on the menu, with the half board menu you have a good selection of dishes but for upgraded dishes there is a small charge.

I hope to see you again when I am sure you will see our service and product improve again.

Kind Regards

We stayed here for a weekend on a half board deal. The hotel was very clean, the staff were very friendly. The food was ok and only ok. The vegetables, in particular, were not really edible as they were overcooked and watery.
Breakfast was quite good but we wondered why there were some tables we weren't allowed to sit at when they were laid up and vacant! Our room was at the back and faced two brick walls which was a bit of a dissapointment, but we weren't in it for long. The location of the hotel was wonderful.
The other thing to note was that mobile phone reception was nonexistent, which is sometimes a plus, but as I have a relative in hospital at present, was a concern of mine.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review of the hotel.

I am delighted you found the hotel clean, and the team friendly. I will ensure they see your positive comments, they deserve recognition. I am sorry you thought the vegetables were inedible and will raise this with the Head Chef. Mobile phone signal is poor in St Mawes however all of our rooms do have telephones.

I agree with your comment that the location is wonderful, I often enjoy walks in the area and find it very relaxing. I hope your relative gets well soon.

Hope to see you again.

Found cheap B & B price through Late Rooms, but most residents were on half board packages- tip ring hotel before you go to ask. The dinner set menu has no price on it which caused chaos when we asked how much. Booked classic rooms but no 217 overlooked rear with very noisy kitchen fans. Quickly asked for another and 222 (no shower) did have sideways view of sea.
Lounge and restaurant have a superb view which makes up for everything else. Foreign staff.
An old hotel used by coach parties but great position.
