“Great Food,Great Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

The menu was very comprehensive with some very unusual fish dishes. There were 5 in our party and we all chose different starters and main courses.Everybody was full of praise for their choices and the quality and quantity of their choice. We had extra portions of the deep fried cauliflower which had been recommended to us by a local. The staff were really friendly and eager to please will certainly visit again when we are back in Cornwall

“Great meal at the Mermaid.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

We visited this restaurant with friends for my husbands birthday on a cold wet Thursday evening.
All four of us had a starter and main main meal and all agreed that the food was excellent. We all sampled fish dishes which were perfectly cooked and plentiful and the cauliflower in batter was so good we had to order a second portion!
It is a cosy restaurant with plenty of memorobilia adorning the walls and ceilings and I am sure that had it been busy on the night we went, there would have been a great atmosphere.
Unfortunately due to the time of year and the horrendous weather that night not many people were out in any of the pubs or restaurants.
If we return to St Ives in the future we will certainly go back to the Mermaid.

“Excellent in every way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

From our lovely welcome to a cheery goodbye our evening was very enjoyable. Having visited on many ocasions whilst on holiday now that we live pretty close it is on our list of preferred places to eat in St Ives. Fillet Steak cooked correctly is difficult to find and I have taken it upon myself to seek it out. The one I had on Saturday was perfection. The service was excellent even though a large party came in. Can't wait to visit again.....

“Blatant tourist trap! food ok but at least atmospheric and nice staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

VERY EXPENSIVE for what it is!

Positives:
The decor is quite cool and the waitress was friendly and pleasant.
The smoked haddock starter was indeed tasty but small!!

Negatives:
The mussels and "tiger prawns" dish contained standard king prawns that were slightly mushy leading me to believe they were quite possibly frozen.

The bread board was 4 tiny chunks of bread with a tiny ramekin of small olives and the olive oil/balsamic were cheap and bland.

The mains left us even more disapointed.

Surf and turf was ordered at medium rare and came out as at least medium well done (there was a tinge of pink in the centre of the steak) and again was served with 4
boiled standard king prawns instead of "tigers" as the menu claimed. At £17 this left me feeling dismayed.

The seafood Thermidor was also severely underrated. Priced at £16 for some potato gratin with 2 scallops, 3 prawns and 2 slithers of monk fish I was literally heart broken.

I have no issue with paying these kind of prices for an evening meal IF it is good quality and leaves me feeling satisfied however here the only thing we thought was really tasty was the 2 pieces of beer battered cauliflower that came with it and one tiny little starter at the beginning of the meal. We left with heavy hearts!

We love this restaurant and come back every year that we are in St Ives - its the overall experience that we like rather than any one thing - thoroughly recommend.
