We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Borthalan in St.Ives.
The owners, Martin and Margaret are two of the most friendly people we have met. Very hospitable while at the same time respecting our privacy.
The room had a beautiful view over St. Ives bay which really lifted our spirits! The bed was firm and comfortable and along with the absolute peace & quiet there, gave us many wonderful nights of sleep. The cleanliness was superb, with plenty of fresh linen & towels.
Nothing was too much trouble. This extended from a perfect breakfast to evening meals. The food was traditional and full of flavour, Margaret is an excellent cook and presents the meals wonderfully.
The beach is a short walk and looks mediterranian, with clear green/blue water and beautiful golden sand.
We have booked to stay again at the end of this month as we really don't feel the service can be topped!

Very friendly owners. Enjoyed our stay very much. The room, though small, was clean and well laid out. Unfortunately we didn't have a sea view but were really only using the room as a base to visit family and friends.

Nice breakfasts, freshly cooked, with a very good choice on the menu.

Highly recommended.

“Excellent hosts”

The Borthalan Hotel

What can we say? These guys are how all hosts should be, so take note! They couldn't do enough for us, with Martin running us into St Ives on a very wet Friday evening then again to the wedding we were attending on Saturday. Thanks for your hospitality!
The other 2 reviews pretty much sum the place up, and with plans to refurbish the rooms (which are very clean, by the way), this place will go from strength to strength.
Oh, and the easter eggs on all the tables at breakfast on Easter Sunday was a lovely touch. Shame I was too hungover to manage breakfast that day!

My girlfriend took me away with her Parents and we stayed at the Borthalan. The first thing we noticed were the excellent views of Carbis Bay. Inside the Hotel the decor was nice and tidy and the owners were very friendly and couldn't do enough to make our stay very nice. Breakfast was very nice with a very varied range. The rooms were clean and tidy and even the in laws approved! I would definatley recommend this Hotel and would go back without hesitation.

“Borthaln hotel is the place to stay in the St. Ives area”

The Borthalan Hotel

Aug 11, 2007

We stayed at this hotel with our two teen age boys in early August. This hotel was excellent in every aspect. The couple that run the place, Martin and Margaret Smith are the most friendly hosts of a b&b that we have ever stayed at. The hotel sits high above Carbis Beach with excellent views of the surrounding area. Several of the rooms have awesome views of the sea(room 3 for instance). The rooms are a typical size for Europe but were roomy enough. It is situated on a dead end street away from any noise so it is ideal for sleeping. We did not hear any noise from adjacent guestrooms during our three night stay. The place was in excellent repair and Margaret works to keep the place very clean. Margaret serves a full sized breakfast that will keep you going until mid afternoon which includes toast, jam, eggs, ham and beans. Martin hosts the bar in the evening where guests can gather for a chat. The walk to St Ives is along the coastal trail which takes about a 1/2hr. It is a very scenic walk and beats the car as parking is tight in St. Ives in any case. Another inexpensive way to travel to St. Ives is by the local train which travels thru Canbis Bay every .5hr. It costs 2 pounds a trip or 6 pounds for a day pass. Superb wide beaches are all along this area's coastline. The water is a bit chilly so you may want a wetsuit. We did a bus tour of britain and a stay in london also but this was by far the best part of our trip. Other attractions worth seeing nearby include St. Micheal's mount and & Land's end(we saw basking sharks from the cliffs). Two hikes that offer some of the best scenery around include the one from Sennon Cove to Lands End and the hike to Godrvey Head to see the lighthouse.
