“Lovely eco-friendly hotel next to Porthminster beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

My husband and I spent a couple of nights here to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary and had a lovely time. Our room on the top floor had a great view of St Ives and we found the staff to be friendly and welcoming. The Cornish cooked breakfast was good, and we loved the descriptions of where the food had come from. It was a great location, just off the beach and close enough to St Ives to easily walk into the town for dinner. We didn't need to get back in the car once we'd arrived.

We spent 5 nights in this hotel its location is ideal close to the train station, and it over lookes the beach. Plenty of coastal walks to do, public transport cheap and close to hotel.
Will stay again

The location of this hotel is great, right on Porthminster beach. The staff were really welcoming and we felt right at home throughout our stay. Would definitely return and stay in one of the larger rooms with sea view.

Thank you for your kind review which is appreciated especially about the staff who we are very proud of. If you can, its always worth getting one of the larger sea view rooms especially with the super king size beds. Thanks again.

I stayed here with my better half in May this year & am writing this review because

A…its very worthy of one & i overlooked it….oops!

&

B…I am amazed at some of the negative views the place has had?

When we arrived it was a very short walk, with clear instructions, from the railway station.

We arrived a little early and as our room was not quite ready we were offered a complementary cream tea, which i accepted and my other half declined.

When mine was almost done, my partner decided she did actually fancy said option and to be fair to the lady making it she did so without fuss and more importantly (bearing in mind this was complimentary and she probably had other stuff to do) with a genuine smile on her face.

We stayed in one of the sea view rooms with a balcony, and yes when sitting out there you are close to the tennis courts and also can see the trains going by…….but to be fair neither were an issue throughout our stay and to me added to the holiday feel…….and no, i am not a train spotter LOL.

The room was absolutely lovely and quirky, but if it had one let down it was that it had an electric shower. Now at home i am spoilt due to the fact we have a stunning shower that feels like you are standing under Niagara falls, so most others, especially electric, are somewhat of a disappointment.

To be very fair to the hotel this was clearly listed on their website but I had foolishly failed to notice such.

Anyway, i went and saw the girl on reception to explain my plight and whilst it was my error she could not have been more helpful, even offering us an alternative room, which whilst lovely….and with a power shower, did not have the lovely view our present room offered, so we stayed where we were.

The breakfasts were awesome and the literature telling where all parts of your food was sourced from was a nice touch.

We had a great break away, which was enhanced by the venue, but most most importantly in my mind the staff working there, who were very good ambassadors for the hotel.

If i could offer one small snippet to the management, i feel, bearing in mind the lovely quirky boutique feel to the place, it could possibly be an idea to put either telescopes or retro binoculars in the two rooms with balconies…..just to add to the experience.

Great time had….well done.

Thank you for your detailed review and your positive comments. It is always satisfying to read that our staff have delivered a high level of service in a friendly but professional manner. I agree that the room in question deserves a more powerful shower over the bath, it is planned to have a major refurbishment later this year. The idea of binoculars or a telescope is great and is the first time its been suggested, and I will investigate. If you visit again then I will ensure that there is definitely some visual aids in the room!! Thank you once again and I hope we have the opportunity to welcome you again.

Just spent a night here and we were very happy with the quality and value for money, we had a basic double at the side of the building but it was very clean and nicely furnished.
The breakfast was without a doubt the best, the presentation and the quality of the locally sourced produce which you were able to read all about.
Excellent location and parking just a short level walk to the shops and bars/restaurants.
Will defiantly use again.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2013

July 2013. We arrived with a painter working on the balcony. Old sheets covered our entrance into the hotel. No word from the painter so we had to drag our cases over paint splattered sheets into the hotel. We received a Luke warm reception - with no mention of the painting going on outside or apology for any inconvenience. We went to our room which had a balcony and the painter continued painting the railings of our balcony so we felt we couldn't sit out there whilst he was there. We went for a walk and upon returning found our car had been hit by another car parked next to us in the hotel's car park. We were only away from the hotel for an hour so the incident happened very soon after we arrived. The damage was on the back left hand side. The on duty manager was attentive but referred the matter to the owner. We had to insist he came to see us but his interest/concern and attention was practically non existent. He finally arrived the next morning. We wanted to leave immediately but felt we had no option but to stay. The car we thought might have caused the damage belonged to a member of the hotel staff and had been moved after we arrived in the parking space next to it. This member of staff was unavailable for us to contact as she had gone for the weekend. The Manager/Owner Mr Bliss, said her car was too small to have caused the damage to our car. I asked Mr Bliss to please take some photos to send to me of the car when his member of staff returned after the weekend. He was not keen to do so, he said her car did have scratches but old ones. I asked if he would still send some pictures. He failed to do so. I sent an email to Mr Bliss via the hotel website and he never bothered to get in touch. He did involve a local policewoman (friend of owner) who came to look at our car in the morning of our departure. What was that about? My husband was upset generally about the way the issue was dealt with and let his feelings be known. The policewoman was pathetic and served no point in being there at all - she should not have been involved - it was ridiculous. As I hadn't booked through tripadvisor I thought I would not be able to write this review but have since found out that I can, hence why it is a rather delayed report. The B&B was very close to a beautiful beach but next to a train line. The hotel was expensive for what we got and the knocked through dining/sitting room does not do justice to what was a fine building. Painting the walls purple with a few fairy lights here and there is not necessarily chic. It certainly wasn't in this case. It is not sour grapes, it was an observation that struck as soon as we arrived and the general air of the place we found was unprofessional and unwelcoming. Given Mr Bliss's humanitarian activities abroad, I would have expected more, much more from him - I don't think we even got a sympathetic comment from him. Rubbish. Never, never, ever, will we be tempted there again.

Unfortunately this review has been written so long after that is not wholly accurate. This guests car was scratched at some point, although there was no evidence that it happened at the hotel or on that day. The guest insisted on calling the police (we are lucky enough to know our local officer – it’s a small town). Admittedly I, as the owner, wasn’t available on the Friday evening, but attended first thing on the Saturday morning. The guest was somewhat irate as I wouldn’t admit liability on behalf of our member of staff. Photos were taken of the car which showed a 18” difference and showed it was impossible for it to be our staff members car and the images were 100% emailed over (having had to call to confirm the correct email address). I was as sympathetic and co-operative as I was allowed to be in the circumstances. I apologise for the decorator who was under strict instructions to only work on balconies when guests were out, but unfortunately with being open all year and work delayed due to bad weather we do have to maintain the property whilst we are open. This normally happens without disruption to the guest experience. For the record there are no fairy lights anywhere in the hotel!

We spent just a night here in a basic room when visiting family. What a fantastic location for St Ives. It is next to a beautiful beach and a level walk into st Ives. An additional bonus is that parking is available.
Although our room was small it was adequate and everything was very clean. It was nice to find ground coffee in the room.
Breakfast was very appetising with a good selection of quality products. We appreciated the freshly baked bread to cut ourselves.
