“Anniversary break at St Ives Harbour Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

We booked in for a two night break in the hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were met by Mark, an extremely helpful and attentive and very chatty porter, who helped us to park our car in the hotel car park opposite. The reception staff were extremely pleasant and efficient and our room was delightful. Room 107 is superb, spacious with the most amazing large bay windows overlooking Porthminster Beach and Carbis Bay to the right with views to St Ives Harbour to the left. The hotel interior is stunning and clean and beautifully furnished. I had really been looking forward to a drink on the terrace but was disappointed by the amount of dirty glasses left lying around on the tables after guests had gone. You wouldn't expect this at such an establishment. There was a lot of seagull 'droppings' on the terrace and the terrace below the bar terrace.
The food in the restaurant was good, but we decided to eat in town on the second evening. The main problem in the restaurant was the lack of staff and the speed of service generally. At breakfast, we ordered some toast to enjoy with our breakfast but it arrived after we had finished. Little things like that just niggle and are irritating when you enjoy an otherwise pleasant stay.
Attention to detail is key.

Room Tip: Would recommend 107 and a view over the sea.

Thanks you very much for your review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us.
I have noted your 'niggles' and can only stress that we do constantly clean and remove the seagull 'evidence' however the Terrace is a regular prime target! I really hope that you will return to the hotel again soon. Kind regards Peter

Lets start from when we arrived. We entered the house (lock was a little rusty) and went to look around. Bedrooms were all lovely but in two of the bathrooms a lump of wire with a black box on the end were hanging out the wall, the light in the utility room section flashed repeatedly when you turned it on in such a way it hurt your eyes. Upstairs is the kitchen and living area that oddly has space for 3 people to watch the massive 3D tv (but with no 3d glasses but that doesn't matter as its drew view so no 3D channels) but the two balcony's combined have space to seat 9 people which was a bit odd. The floor had not been swept very well if at all but someone was sent over to sweep it as soon as we raised it. Also the hooks to hang your coat up at the door are strangely low and obscured by a cupboard. No broom or mop so you can't clean yourself, no dishcloth, no welcome folder so you have to guess to work out how everything works, there is no mention what so ever on the hotel website or the mews website about restricted swimming times for under 16's and the wifi is a little sneaky. While you do have a wifi box in the house there is no power cable so it won't work and the only active one is in mews one so only in some places in the house it works and it regularly drops out. In addition if someone else uses the wifi (which as everyone in the surrounding house are as there wifi isn't turned on) its even more unreliable. But I am focusing on the negative, there are lovely sea views (but with a busy road soundtrack) and the furnishings and also quite nice with enough pillows for the whole of st Ives. The parking right outside is nice and the house is airey. Overall a nice place but with some frustrating corner cutting and odd layout in regards to the furnishings. Would probable send the extra £400 next time for a apartment right on the sea edge over the road.

Room Tip: Choose mews 4 over others as you get a balcony that's not overlooked by mews 1,2,3

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I am pleased that you enjoyed the sea views and the furnishings. Although your booking was made via the agent Cornish Gems I wish that you had flagged up your maintenance issues to the Hotel as we would have immediately tried to resolve them for you. I am delighted that you are thinking of coming back to the Peninsula Apartments next to the Hotel. Kind regards Peter

We recently stayed for 3 nights, which was thoroughly enjoyable, following a shaky start. Having booked a Double Room, this turned out to be extremely small, hot and noisy at the front of the building. We decided that we could not 'manage' for 3 nights and upgraded to a Family Room with a sea view. Room 207 was large and comfortable with a stunning view of Porthminster Beach. We then had to move into room 207, which was slightly smaller, but with the same stunning views.
The hotel is at the top of the hill into St. Ives. It takes approximately 10 minutes to walk into the centre/harbour and involves steep hills/steps, which would not suit everyone.
The Dining Room has the same stunning views and breakfast was adequate.
Having initially thought our hotel was too far away from the centre, this turned out to be a bonus. Friends who stayed in the centre found it noisy and were unable to get a good nights sleep. I would definitely stay there again.

Initially I was a bit put off by the hotel after speaking to a lady in reception when I first arrived. She told me that "everything" had gone wrong for her which of course worried me. Secondly I question why the hotel hire a porter/valet driver as the porter didn't even drive our car into a space for me and my boyfriend; he got my boyfriend to park his car in the smallest possible space which was really quite difficult and put him under unnecessary stress. On a more positive note the hotel is very beautiful (inside) and the views from the bedrooms/restaurant are gorgeous. The spa is lovely aswell and my massage was 10/10. The food was very good but I think it's a bit cheeky that the hotel expect you to pay an extra 10% 'tip' on top of your food bill at the end of your stay. Another down side was that there was quite a bit of noise outside our bedroom door quite early in the morning which woke me. Overall I'd say it was pretty average. The location is lovely but I'm not sure our one night's stay was actually worth £139.50 each.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay especially the bedroom, spa and restaurant. We try where possible to assist with parking, I am sorry that the porter on duty was unable to drive. The gratuities for the restaurant could have been removed from your final bill on departure should you have wished. I look forward to welcoming you to the Hotel again in the future. Kind regards Peter

What a great hotel, with one caveat, food very good, service excellent, beautiful views, but please do not stay in room 116, very hot with no ventilation, very noisy, as it is at the back of the hotel, facing the main road and most importantly there is a commercial boiler flue within reaching distance of the only window, so if you have small children or a breathing disorder this could be a serious problem(carbon monoxide).

We stayed at the Harbour Hotel & Spa earlier this year and what a pleasant surprise, We were met by a car porter who relieved us of our car for a couple of day the car was put in a secure car park right opposite the hotel. The staff who greeted us were fast efficient & friendly we did upgrade our room to a suite which was well worth it as we had a great view of the bay & Harbour, The room itself had recently been revamped & decorated which was very good, We stayed on a dinner bed & breakfast basis and it was well worth it as the food was excellent, well presented & served by very helpful staff provided you timed your meals you should be able to get a window table with again excellent views out over the sea, The bar itself was a little small but there were plenty of comfortable seats dotted around the various relaxing rooms & patio. The spa side of the Hotel was excellent providing a good sized indoor pool with a hot tub steam & sauna rooms, I had a back massage & my wife had the Indian head massage & both were well worth the cost, Overall we had a great weekend maybe slightly expensive but well worth it we will definitely revisit the Hotel early next year.

We stayed on a deal weekend, two nights, breakfast and one evening meal. The room, with a fantastic sea view, was spacious and well appointed. he public areas are good, and the food in the restaurant, overlooking the bay, was very good. Free parking was included in the small car park opposite, and the town and railway station are just a short stroll round the bay. Would recommend it.

Room Tip: Get one of the refurbished room, and splash out a little for a larger room with a full sea view.
