“Outside better than the inside”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

Had a groupon deal so thought it was great value but would be a lot more critical if I had paid the advertised rates. Was concerned when I went into the room to see 3 single beds close together but then realised this was a family room & round the corner was a double bed with plenty of space. The furnishings were good quality but dated and the bath was chipped.rusty, had purple stains & the dreaded shower curtain. The shower however was new and efficient & the towels were lovely. Internet not available in rooms but worked well in the main corridor. Decorating was tatty in places but it must be like The Forth Bridge & there were decorators working in various places. Breakfast was excellent with everything replaced promptly, fresh fruit & friendly service. The best aspect of the estate was the grounds. Even on a cold March day the clematis amandii in the walled garden & the camelias were lovely. The walk down to St Ives was a pleasure with great views of the bay & the town & very well maintained. If I got a deal I would go again.

My partner and I had a wowcher deal and for an upgrade of £20 we were given a fabulous room on the lower ground floor with the most incredible views of St. Ives. The bed was huge - and so comfortable. After spending 2 hours on the M25 before reaching the M3 our journey time from Kent was about 8 hours - so we were exhausted. That first night's sleep was the best I've ever had in a hotel - I don't think I moved all night.
We had a 20% discount off dinner in the restaurant - not to be confused with the Brasserie which would have been full price - and for a 3-course meal we paid £36.and odd pence which was the discount price. The food was beautifully cooked and presentation was immaculate.
The breakfast was self-service with waiters on hand to fetch toast, decaffeinated coffee and anything else that was required. There was plenty of choice and it was all very well presented and cooked. As soon as a bowl was almost finished, another was brought out immediately.
The grounds are just immaculate (sorry for the repetition - but superlatives are hard to not repeat!) and I can imagine someone having a beautiful wedding reception in the grounds or in the Castle itself.
The staff couldn't have been more helpful or pleasant; nothing was too much trouble and we were greeted with beaming smiles on arrival and each morning for breakfast.
The only negative for us was that we had someone above us and from 6.30 a.m. onwards they continually walked backwards and forwards presumably from the bathroom as they possibly went into an early breakfast. The creaking floor was a bit of a nuisance and woke us both up. But there isn't anything you can do about that in a castle that is over 200 years old.
I would come back to Tregenna Castle again and again - with or without a wowcher deal. It really is a magical place and its position - overlooking the bay of St. Ives - couldn't be more ideal.

Room Tip: Our room was superb and it is well worth asking for a sea view. We spoke to someone who was above th...

I have just started writing my reviews and wanted to let you all know about my experiences of the Tregenna Castle Hotel, I will try and keep this short but can't guarantee!!!!, I have been staying here once a month on business for about 6 years now and if wanted too on my budget, I could stay in any hotel or B&B in St.Ives, but after my first visit here it fitted all my requirements, very friendly and helpful staff, just too name a few Lyn, Wendy and Fred, nice rooms & clean!, a good breakfast choice, a swimming pool, gym, sauna & stream rooms, a really nice short walk from the town/ harbour (10MINS CASUAL STROLL), great views, tennis courts, also a grand entrance up the driveway to the castle, and to top it all off an 18 hole golf course with great views of the Atlantic Ocean, which goes all the way around the hotel!. The walk down through the 'WOODLAND WALK' to the town, I would recommend if you like a scenic route?, then once you have got to the gate at the bottom of the path by the road, cross the road directly in front of you and go all the way down the 'step road' to the 'PORTHMINSTER CAFE' of the beach, which is to my view one of the best restaurants in St.Ives!, and from there you take a right all the way 'ALONG THE BEACH FRONT' into the town you get lovely views the famous and rustic coastline of Cornwall. Would I recommend?, well with my review I am sure you can guess a big yes!, just one more thing to take into consideration that as lovely the walk down to the town as you know if you go down you have co come back up!, I am not unfit and not an athlete but would suggest that if a trek all the way back up the hill is not you idea of relaxation then grab a cab at the bottom of the hill which is just as you walk out the town 'BACK UP THE HILL', also if you like a top class curry then try out - 'CURRY GARDEN' which is as good as you get outside of Birmingham!. Hope this helps a little?, oh and one more thing the 'THE SLOOP INN', on the corner of the harbour, a great pint a great location!

Room Tip: A sea view or the self contained lodges at the back of the hotel overlooking the golf course!

We stayed in one of the apartments and was told it needed 'modernising' as we got a 'deal' on our visit. The reality hit us as the stench did. It doesn't need modernising, it needs demolishing. We stayed for 1 of our scheduled nights and then got right out of there. As for the rest of the hotel, if you don't have a sense of smell and your eye sight is going, then I can see how this would pass as a half decent place but unfortunately our senses weren't dulled and so we got out as soon as we could.
My final comment is about what it could be. If the owners spend £500k on a makeover, then this could be a lovely hotel - it has all the raw materials.

It is completely out of the question that one of our reservations staff would tell you that you got a deal because the property needed modernisation. It borders on the ridiculous that you would suggest it.
It is also quite surprising that you would insult other contributors by suggesting that their opinions do not count and that they are senseless.
Perhaps you could contact us directly and we can investigate your claims in more detail.

Used a 'Groupon' deal but upgraded the room. There were 9 of us in total occupying 5 rooms. Our room was room 134. A large spacious corner room which was spotlessly clean. The view from the room was worth the £10 upgrade alone, it had an unobstructed view looking directly over St Ives harbour, really breathtaking. The bed was huge and really comfortable.
In fairness the hotel for the most part is tired in places, it isn't dirty just tired. Some parts have clearly been renovated recently and I guess its just an ongoing process.
The hotel has both an indoor and outdoor pool neither of which I used, i did however use the gym which was adequate.
There are two things however that really make this hotel reach the excellent category, firstly its location, which includes in grounds and views and secondly the staff. The staff were brilliant, when we arrived we were met by Lisa on reception. She set the scene for the whole stay, bright and witty, with a great sense of humour.Thanks.

Room Tip: upgrade to the 2nd floor and get a room overlooking the harbour

Pros - Location, impressive 'castle' building with spectacular views towards St Ives which is within walking distance (but a steep hill). Facilities: pools indoor & out, spa, fabulous grounds & sports attractions. Good breakfast and Head Waiter works hard attending to guests. Our room was adequate but nothing special, I was impressed by the daily cleaning staff.

Cons - Rooms are not as grand as the hotel would suggest. Despite friendly staff, the bar area doesn't work - it is dominated by a huge noisy TV and has no atmosphere. The reception desk staff always busy and seemed to be too distracted by their screens to look up ...but not sure why as hotel seemed quiet to me. The food in restaurant (on a Mon night so perhaps chef was off) was bland - worst lasagne I have ever eaten. The advertised internet wi-fi ONLY works in the central corridor near entrance, connectivity isn't great & you sit in rows of Chesterfield sofas amongst the families & children - not suited to business travellers.

Overall verdict - We were underwhelmed as this hotel looked great and COULD be a real gem, it has a prime position and buildiing deserve that. It needs some investment on the rooms, many of which have great seaviews. The best improvement would be the addition of a visible, attentive Front of House manager to meet & greet guests and keep an attentive eye on proceedings on the central corridor. Not sure if we just had an off-night in the hotel restaurant - chalk&cheese compared to the quality and attention to detail of the Carbis Bay Hotel throughout.

Room Tip: Pay the little extra for the seaview - you won't regret it

Thank you for your review and for finding aspects of our hotel to compliment. I am sorry that some areas were a disappointment and that you had an issue with your food.
Tha WiFi is available throughout the main corridor, the Brasserie, Lounge bar, Godrevy room and Brunnel room, connectivity is not usually a problem
I personally spend a great deal of time at the front of house, and make a point of greeting each guest that passes.
I sincerely hope that you will visit us again and give us the opportunity to impress you.

We spent a wonderful long weekend at Tregenna castle and we had a great time. We love St. Ives and Tregenna, the food the service and the facilities were excellent. We love the golf course and it has some breathtaking views over over St. Ives bay on the back nine.
The gardens and the wooded walk are spectacular even in March.
We stayed in Lady Chatterley’s which was a sweet little cottage, loved the private wooded garden which would be great for BBQ's & al fresco dining when the weather is a little warmer.
All though it was out of season it was a good deal warmer than Leicestershire and the sun shone on us every day.
The only complaint is 4 days wasn’t long enough. We will be back later in the year.

We will hopefully be back later in the year.
