“A glitch or two but really loved it and would stay again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

We arrived by train and stayed three nights in a room with a balcony and so had all the benefits of the location. The sea roared all night which was marvellous- shut the door if you want it quietened! We would have liked a security chain on the sliding door so it could remain open all night and yet be secure (the balcony was shared). The room was fairly small but satisfactory - most importantly, the bed was very comfortable, there was a small but adequate 'wardrobe' space, a working television set, armchair and space for the cases and, of course, the balcony with chairs and a table. The bathroom was tiny, a shower and lavatory in one space with the hand basin outside in an alcove in the bedroom. I chose to think we were given this because of our slenderness...but then again, perhaps not! If you are a reasonable size you will want to make sure that you have more space than this facility allows. We found it snug but fine - and the shower was terrific. We enjoyed the breakfast combination of buffet fruit, toast and muffins etc with a hot meal that could be ordered. We also had dinner at the restaurant and enjoyed the food and service. The bar snacks were also a fine feature. However, it does have to be made clearer when the kitchen closes. We missed out on a hot snack but the dessert menu that was still on offer included a cheese platter that was readily available, generous and very pleasant.

The facilities are generous - seating for the bar near the ocean and inside, similar arrangements for breakfast/restaurant and a comfortable area for guests. We found everything clean and although there are some signs of age we did not find it unattractive.

Most imortantly, the staff were pleasant, well informed and efficient.

We would stay again. Next time I would phone the hotel rather than using an internet site as the cost per room was the same.

Room Tip: Choose a room with the ocean and a balcony. Ask about the bathroom size. However, if you do not mind...

We've just spent Christmas at the Pedn Olva and here's our thoughts. Yes, the hotel is very expensive but it was the festive period and the location is simply spectacular. There was nothing between us and the sea which we used to drop off to sleep whilst listening to. Breakfast and Christmas dinner were really good and drinks reasonably priced for type of hotel and area. Room was quite small but well maintained and clean. Overall, you get what you pay for.

I think this place is trading on its stunning location. Its disappointing because it wouldn't take much to make it a much more luxurious stay eg new carpets, cleaning the toilets properly etc.we had to keep the door to our ensuite closed because of the awful smell. This smell put me off eating in the dining room as it didn't inspire confidence in the hygeine of the place. Having said that the breakfast was great and the staff were good.

The Pedn Olva has been on our list of "places we'd like to stay" for a while, but has always seemed a little on the pricey side, and the TripAdvisor reviews have been a bit mixed.
Anyway, we found a good off-season deal, so gave it a go.
The location is simply spectacular, overlooking the harbour to one side, and Porthminster beach to the other side.
We'd booked a double, but got a family room, which was very nicely decorated, spacious and had amazing views across the beach. During the night, the gentle sound of the waves lapping the beach outside was a delight!
Tiny bathroom, but a nice deep bath and an excellent over-bath shower.
The public areas have the feel of a nice pub, rather than a traditional hotel, but no criticism. And the views are fantastic!
Excellent breakfast - particularly the "Full English" which was good and hot.
The "self-service" toaster needs a re-think, as the toast comes out half-toasted and causes a bit of a queue at peak breakfast time.
No free parking, but a pay-and-display car park directly behind the hotel.

Couldnt ask for anything more, it was lovely. Took advantage of a mid week offer for one night out of season and so it was very good value for B&B basis. All rooms have a sea view and a what a view! Although our room was tiny, it was perfect for us as we wanted a cosy little get away even with the bijoux bathroom in the cupboard which had a very nice powerful shower!
Entered our room to see two seals playing in waves beneath our window - how cool is that! Lovely watching the sunset and sunrise at breakfast too.
Service was very good and the place was spotless. Would recommend and definitely stay again.
Great location for a stroll into town and also near station to catch the train anywhere.

We stayed in a balcony double and thankfully didn't pay the full room rate (>£140/night) as we booked at the last minute. After being greeted with a surly check in with no pleasantries we were shown our room which was miniscule with our 'en suite' resembling a cupboard, it wasn't big enough for me, an averaged sized male to get dressed in.

In addition the sink wasn't even in the bathroom, being shoe-horned into the corner of our actual bedroom so you had to come out of the bathroom and walk through the room to wash your hands!

The room was shabby in places, with rusting metal on a shelf and in the shower, dust and cobwebs on the curtains and a stained carpet. There was no warbrobe to hang clothes - just an open space with a few hangers squashed into the corner of the room which wasn't easily accesible as the bed side table was in the way such was the size of the room. The so called wardrobe was also too low to hang dresses etc without them draping on the floor.

Don't expect to have a conversation without raised voices with your partner also if rooms adjacent or above are using their showers or toilets, the plumbing noises were horrendous.

In the rooms favour was the comfy bed and the views, which were amazing, as was the noise of the waves crashing on the rocks below.

Unfortunately our so called balcony was actually one long terrace in front of three rooms with no discernable partitions between the rooms so lying in bed looking out at the views was out of the question as the occupants from the other rooms could quite easily see in and vice versa. The furniture provided to enjoy our 'balcony' were two shabby chairs and a small dirty white plastic table.

The breakfast, however, was good with a great choice of buffet and cooked items and again, the views from the breakfast room were breathtaking.

In summary, we were disappointed by the room and very grateful we didn't pay full price but the views and breakfast made up for this slightly. Would I stay again? I'm not sure I could ever justify spending that amount of money on such a scruffy shoe box sized room again even if the views and the breakfast are good...

Stayed in the best room (35) in this wonderfully positioned hotel. The room did not disappoint with extensive sea/bay of St Ives views. it was well equipped and with a comfortable bed. A few minor niggles but overall pleased with the room but it did need a new carpet and rug. The entrance foyer and parts of the bar rather smelt of toilets. There are loos in the entrance area and I presume they are responsible. Staff were generally pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was good overlooking the beach of Porthminster. Ate one in evening in the restaurant and wasn't overly impressed, the menu is very limited and there are much better places to eat in St Ives which is only a short walk away. Overall we did enjoy our stay but I have to say that was probably because we had the best room and I know from experience the other hotel rooms don't come close. Please rid the place of the horrid smell and replace carpets and some of the upholstery was a bit worn in places too. I would recommend the hotel because of it's position but only if they stayed in Room 35.
