“A delightful place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

We called in here for a drink, on the last day of our stay in St Ives to mark the 50th wedding anniversary of my mum and dad. Shame we hadn't arrived earlier in the day so we could have enjoyed the gorgeous view of the beach from the conservatory for a bit longer - you'd think you were looking out at the Caribbean - but we will do that next time! We ordered drinks from the bar, the staff were all really friendly and helpful, didn't want to leave, but we would like to book a stay here in the summer and then we won't move from that view all day! :-)

As we have grandchildren living in Newlyn we are regular visitors to the area. Although we often have to have budget breaks in a caravan we ensure that at least once or twice a year we stay a few nights in our favourite hotel. Rounding the corner as you go past the station and seeing the view in front of us is worth the long journey from our home in Hampshire. The hotel is certainly not cheap but you get what you pay for; a friendly welcome, clean comfortable rooms and delicious food coupled with a clean safe beach and spectacular view. The reception staff and all the restaurant and bar staff are always thoughtful and helpful and we would like to especially mention Cara who always greets us with a friendly smile and makes us feel we are the most important of visitors. This year I visited the newly opened spa. What a joy! The spa is situated next to the heated swimming pool. The decor is both tasteful and relaxing and I can honestly say I had the best back massage I have ever been lucky enough to experience. The walk into St Ives is a treat in itself although a morning cup of coffee in the conservatory takes a lot of beating especially when the dolphins are putting on a show in the bay! We have loved all our stays and will be returning as soon as possible.

Room Tip: We stayed in an apartment. It was of 5* standard. In previous years we have stayed in the hotel itse...

This hotel does not have a star rating but looked just great on the web. We were informed by the receptionist that it is a luxury family run boutique hotel. It sounded wonderful, just the ideal place for a romantic anniversary break. We booked a superior double room with sea view and balcony, direct with the hotel at £320 PN DB&B. What a big shock we had when we arrived, our room 107 was very small and cramped, so small there was nowhere to put anything down. The bed was comfortable, it had to be as it was the only place you could see the TV from. The balcony was also very small, but the view was very good. The modern bathroom was also small. Anyone above normal size would not have been able to sit on the toilet.
The Sands Restaurant was very nice, but you could not book an actual table, and as such you did not have an allocated table for your stay. If you wanted a nice table you had to arrive as soon as the restaurant opened. The food was good even although it always arrived luke warm.
The general service was very poor and amateurish, and it appeared that most of the staff did not enjoy their job. There was an exception to this, a Romanian couple who smiled and could not have been more helpful and knew how too serve.

Breakfast served from 07.45 was a let down, once at 07.55 the dinning doors were not even open,. the main breakfast buffet was not fully laid out until 08.10. The usual staff greeting was "room number"and "what time do you want to book for dinner tonight"? Anything extra for breakfast such as Kippers or a cheese omelette, an extra charge was made (like being in a guest house).
The general standard of the hotel was poor: Used crockery left on the veranda and around the
pool was still there several hours later. On returning to our room at 17.00hrs one afternoon, our room had not been made up. One night the Sands Restaurant was moved to the conservatory to make way for a wedding reception with no prior announcement. Later the wedding fireworks were great. No so good was the live music until 23.30. It is clear the the hotel has very little consideration for their actual guests.
We later learnt that a well known, and very good holiday company that caters exclusively for the over 50's, has a block booking of 27 rooms at this hotel (not peak periods). Prices booked with this company are 50% less than what you would pay if you booked individually. On paying our bill we were asked are you with Saga?
Our stay at the Carbis bay hotel was a big disappointment at an over priced hotel offering very poor value for money. There is a total lack of good management, and this is reflected on the poor service and staff moral. The hotel trades on the natural beauty of Carbis bay.
We have been spoilt by hotels in Europe, where the service, food, and rooms are of a very high standard and are value for money. For us the future is back to the awful airport hassle!!

Tips. If you wish to stay a this hotel and are over 50 booked with a well know British holiday
company
Always ask if the hotel has any Weddings booked over the period of your stay?
If you are of ample size do not book room 107
There are no lifts in the Carbis Bay Hotel

Room Tip: Avoid room 107. It cramped and very small

We always walk here from St Ives across the headland. In the winter we sit in the beautiful conservatory , on warmer days we sit outside. the view is stunning and very relaxing! tea and coffee come with exquisite home made biscuits but a great option is the Cornish cream tea! This is where I spent childhood summers so it has happy memories!
the staff at the hotel are always welcoming, helpful and chatty - well done for great customer service!

We booked a two night stay with afternoon tea, dinner, spa treatments and a hamper in our room, and had a few days of absolute luxury. The location is utterly beautiful, and the walk into St Ives, even in foul weather, was a delight. The housekeeping staff do a tremendous job, and our room, with a sea view and a big bay window, was spotlessly clean and fresh. The hotel provide huge towels, fluffy dressing gowns and a good range of bathroom products that smell divine. Our dinner in the restaurant was delicious, and the staff were very friendly, kind and attentive. Service in the conservatory was rather more haphazard, with long waiting times and some strange substitutions; my husband ordered a club sandwich, was served a burger, queried why it wasn't a club sandwich and was assured that it was in fact a club sandwich. He ate it, and the same waiter came to clear and asked him if he'd enjoyed his burger. We decided to accept this dottiness as part of the quirky charm of the hotel. The spa was very enjoyable; beautifully decorated and atmospheric, but we did pick up on some tensions between the spa staff, which made it slightly less relaxing. We'll definitely return though; the staff made sure it was a really special few days.

Room Tip: Go for the sea view and be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves!

This is a gem of a hotel with old fashioned values and standards. We stayed for 2 nights in October and really enjoyed our visit. It is a family run hotel and engenders a family feeling and avoids being “stuffy”. In saying that a young family may find the age range of the mid-week October residence a little restricting although the nearness of the beach and swimming pool would be a distraction. The staff we met were all very good with a relaxed professional air.
The food was all very good, our package included an afternoon tea,( sandwiches, tartlets and cream tea), which was exhalent, if a little filling. It would be hard to eat the full set menu (for which there were 4 choices per course) in the evening but we learnt that its quite acceptable to just have one course at dinner and pay accordingly. the Bar menu looked ok as well.
There is a good range of rooms with sea views and rear facing, we were in a room with a partial sea view and were told that at the time of booking so no complaints there. Some rooms are on the ground floor, or up a couple of steps, which is impotent to some as there is no lift and the second floor feels like quite a climb at the end of the day.
There’s plenty of opportunity for cliff walks or to just sit in the conservatory and watch for seals in the bay.
Some would need to be aware of the trains that run near to the hotel, it’s a very quiet branch line running along the coast, very usful if you need to travel by train. We didn’t hear anything after 7.30 at night, however if the slight rumble from that would disturb you there are rooms that are more and less susceptible but even though our room was close it didn’t affect us and I am a light sleeper.
All in all a good place to stay. Please try not to book the best rooms next February as we hope to call in for a few days then.
