“Lovely location, quiet but food not brilliant and service poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2007

My husband booked this hotel for a romantic night away. The hotel is situated in a beautiful location with fantastic sea views! The small lounge was cosy with an open fire and comfortable sofas, the conservatory had amazing views and the bedroom was a reasonable size.
I was impressed with the presentation of the hotel - However, the service was appauling!
Breakfast is served until 10am during the week. My husband and I went to the dining room at 9am and were stood waiting to be seated for 5 minutes. When we were showed to a table there were no cups and saucers for coffee/tea and no menu was proivided for the cooked breakfast. When we eventually ordered our food and drink the tea pot was almost dropped onto the table by the waitress, spilling the tea over the table!
Two further couples came into the dining room at 9.30am. One of the waitresses walked past our table when she said: "Not more late comers!"
The waitress approached the couple and asked them to come to breakfast earlier and they needed more time to prepare the cooked breakfast. I was so shocked at this becasue breakfast does not finish until 10am!
If you want a drink from the bar you will be waiting a LONG time. There was never any staff running the bar and when you rang the bell for assistance they took a long time to serve.
The food isn't brilliant. There was one vegetarian choice and that was bland and dull. However, the sweet was lovely. I recommend the chocolate orange mousse.
The hotel is great for getting away and if your over 50yrs old....

Have just returned from 2 night break at the CARBIS BAY HOTEL
Nice hotel for the money, Great location right on the beach 2 miles fron st ives, Rooms are not the biggest but what do you eexpect from a hotel dating back to the late 1890's ??
Freindly staff nice and clean and breakfast and evening meals were good and if your lucky enough to meet the hotel cat then give him a cuddle..Forget the negative reveiws saying this is bad and that is bad and IF YOUR THAT SAD AND CANT REALLY FIND NOTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT ANYTHING THEN STAY AT HOME AND BUY A TRAVEL COT....

I can understand the comments re the small rooms, however we booked a balcony sea facing room and although still not spacious, was adequate and the balcony view wonderful. Do these people spend their entire stay in their room ?
The food was excellent; the staff (all of them) were attentive and considerate. The situation of the hotel unbeatable. The pleasant walk into St Ives and the train ride upon return was lovely. Some other comments mentioned that the rooms and Hotel was tired, they must have been stopping at another Hotel.
Looking forward to our return.

Myself my wife and 18 month son decided to stay at the hotel over the recent bank holiday weekend. The hotel looked fantastic when we booked using the web. Unfortunately the truth is that the hotel is in need of an update. The room was very small and again was not up to the price that we paid. When we arrived we asked for a cot but none was available which resulted in me sleeping on the floor without a matress. That was our fault as we booked last minute but the staff did little to help, except look rather puzzeled.

The location of the hotel is great and the food was quite good, but not outstanding.

I think next year we will return to the Primrose Valley in St Ives which is cheaper and is truely is something special.

Unbeatable location on small children friendly beach in small secluded bay. Very steep hill to access but adequate parking
available in all but highest season (residents free, £3/day for general public). Maybe getting a bit over-developed up the hill near the train station (5mins to St Ives).

Hotel has not got better over the years although money has been spent on it and surrounding properties.
Food fairly good but deteriorating somewhat over the years.
Staff service a bit patchy and inpersonal. Not all that 'children friendly' (restrictions) for a goodish 3 star hotel getting a bit above its station.
Owners 'children' do not appear to ahere to standards expected
of guests children.

Rooms a bit tired and in need of some attention. Cleanliness reasonable but not exceptional.
Outdoor pool with sheltered area.

Very very pricy for what you get as a total package but location
maybe makes up for it.

We were really looking forward to coming to this hotel having visited Carbis Bay Beach for many years. However our room (208) was basically a single room with a double bed (you could touch the bed from the toilet!!) with no-where to put our small travel bags we had to climb over them each day to get out the door (not ideal in a fire). I left some clothes behind in a side drawer and have just made my forth call to get them back - happy to pay the postage for my own stupid mistake - I chased up again two weeks on to see where they were. I spoke to the owner who said "Not to worry I'm sure they'll get to you eventually"!!
Unfortunately with this level of customer service both during and after our stay, we won't be returning. This hotel relies heavily on its location and sees no reason to put in effort because of this.

We do feel that some of your negative reviews must be out of date. This was our first visit and hopefully we shall be staying there again. The food was really excellent, service good. Yes, the rooms are not large but were clean and wholesome. Our side sea room gave us a good view of beach and the sea. As in most hotels bathrooms could do with more shelf space. We must say that we had booked this hotel before reading all the complaints made against it and we set off wondering exactly what to expect. It was all a most pleasant surprise.
