What a treat. Alan and Sharon have created somewhere very special in the Salt House - very highly recommended (book early, this is a poorly kept secret..)
Tucked (from the back) into an unprepossessing residential street, this sanctuary is a 20 minute stroll along the coastal path from St Ives. Once safely ensconced in your room (don't fret about choice, there are only two, both stunning), you will be able to sit out quietly on your balcony and stare over the beautiful bay, watch the gulls and enjoy real peace and quiet.
Your room is minimalistic and everything is top quality. Alan and Sharon both come from designer backgrounds, so don't' be surprised to see some funky and imaginative furniture. But all that aside, what we love is kazillion thread count sheets, a shower that almost drowns you, underfloor heating and a huge fluffy rug for our tootsies and a double ended bath shaped like an egg (you don't have one at home.. really..)?
The Salt House isn't perfect. The location, while stunning, is not for the mildly infirm or (like me), mildly lazy. The stroll to St Ives includes a steep hill that tests your stamina. Your outside balcony isn't 100% private from the other room (plants are being encouraged to fix this). Some would be fine with this, but I'm not a huge fan of whispering over breakfast - or indeed pretending not to listen to others conversations (yes, we all do it..)
These are small niggles though in what is a fantastic place to relax and explore.
Now, about that breakfast. Beautiful tray, held aloft, full of gorgeous and (mostly) healthy things that will keep you going for hours. The fruit pot thing is amazing (each one enough for two) and the scrambled eggs rich and so.. umm.. yellow. Don't even think about lunch - you'll explode if you try.
Top marks to Alan and Sharon for what they have achieved. If they keep doing what they are doing, they don't need good TripAdvisor reviews, word of mouth will keep them busy. A great source of local knowledge, Alan is always happy to chat, advise, give directions and so on. These two work hard and the results are clear to see.
Good luck to them. Go visit them..!
