“Very Comfortable Hotel, beautiful village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2008

Stayed at the Slipway with my wife and two young sons on August Bank Holiday Monday night.

We reserved a suite (Room 11) which had a family bedroom with one double and 2 single beds, a separate sitting room with TV and a neat bathroom with bath and overhead shower. The rooms were converted within the attic so headroom was a luxury, although this added to the overall charm of the place.

The rooms were clean and the bedroom showed signs of having been recently redecorated and furnished, the bathroom was, I would suspect, almost brand new and gleamingly white and fresh.

The view from the small picture window in the sitting room overlooked the harbour and there was usually a bit of a scrum to get to spend some time there watching the world go by outside.

Port Isaac is picture post card, a quaint fishing village with narrow winding streets and white washed cottages and ragged coastline. The coastal walk is easily accessible but is quite steep and difficult in parts.

A good excuse to return to the village and relax either on the slipway itself, which seems to attract a lot of the local Inns’ customers, or inside where the views can still be enjoyed from the comfort of the bar.

One tip, DO NOT attempt to drive into the village unless you have to, it’s very tight and only single car width in parts with two way traffic. The public car park at the top of the hill is a 5 – 10 minute walk although spaces are a rarity especially on a Bank Holiday weekend.

We ate at the Slipway restaurant in the evening and had a very pleasant evening and great meal, the service was prompt and polite and all plates were returned clean. It wasn’t as busy as I would have thought but I don’t think this was any reflection on the hotel or restaurant if our meal was anything to go by.

Breakfast the following morning was also very good with a selection of cereals, juices, fruit and a hot dish menu.

All in all very good, very comfortable and a beautiful part of the world.

If I have a complaint it would be the cost of staying here, not just at the Slipway, we also checked out the Old School and the price for a similar room was comparable. I suppose the fame of TV has nudged the pricing upwards but it is certainly worth a visit.

Port Isaac is a cute place. The Slipway hotel is a also a cute place. Yes, the parking is up a steep old hill but you can drop your bags off at the place before you leave your precious gas guzzling baby in the car park on the edge of town. And besides, the 10 min walk back to the harbourside residence will allow you acquaint yourself with the simple geography and wonderful views afforded by the location. The hotel itself is a relatively simple affair. Oddly, it appears to be run entirely by women, which is not a bad thing for a old boy like me, but it is rather Stepfordish at times. The reception is the bar at the front so don't waste your energy wondering aimlessly around the place trying to find something more official looking - it's casual; have a beer while you register and chill out! I stayed in the annex on the side of the main building. It was nice, clean and comfortable. A bit hot and airless perhaps, but not a deal breaker. The bathroom was a good size and had a lovely shower (which is hard to find these days). There was some kind of kitchen extractor outside which meant that there was a constant hum all night - but I'm a little odd so I liked it. It was also a little disconcerting to have two kitchen staff standing outside the bathroom window (in the little alley between the annex and hotel) having a fag and a chinwag while I was doing a wee wee. I got used to it but had to concentrate. Perhaps I'd suggest, on balance, that you try to get a room in the main hotel but if you end up in the annex don't cry; it's fine. I had dinner there too and the seafood was excellent and the price was dearish, as expected for Cornwall cum little London (Port Isaac is full of Sloanes - it's almost like being in Kensington or the Cotswolds) There's a nice bar where you can sit outside and drink your post diner Bailey's. I liked this place. It was good and I'd come back. Just let me do a wee wee in peace next time girls.

Having read the reviews and considering the price, my expectations were of course quite high.
Parking can only be described as a nightmare. You have to park 10 mins walk away up a very steep hill (although to be fair this is explained in the advertising).
Check-in was ok, although there is no check-in desk as such, you check-in at the bar (not particularly inviting).
The room was clean and modern.
The duvet cover was clean but had a stain/mark on the top (should have been easily spotted by housekeeping) which I felt should have resulted in it being replaced.
The shower fluctuated in the evening but was ok in the morning.
Food at the hotel was excellent.
Port Isaac appears to be very busy on a weekend, especially with young people. This in itself is fine, but when it continues on until after 3 in the morning at the front of the hotel, sleep is a problem. Whilst the hotel may not be able to control youths revving motorcycles, I do expect them to control noise in the outside bar seating area at the front - which is part of the hotel.
Don't want to finish on a negative, so can honestly say that the location of the hotel is idilic.
