“One night in hotel penzance. ..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2014

After driving for several hours on a warm summers day from london, it would have been happy to stay in a hay barn with cold running tap. We arrived up a winding lane to outside of an 18th century building; beautiful in its fauna and flora and regional dry stone walls. The drive come car park was busy with parked vehicles but we were happy to park on the street, remembering to place vehicle into park, set hand brake and face wheels into kerb. You get the idea of the incline. The reception is modern; freindly and inviting with the house cat which greeted us as we entered. We are shown to our rooms which are unfortunately on the first floor with no lift. The corridors are small and appear to be in a process of being upgraded. My room 16 is bright, clean, modern but warm. I overlook the bay over local roof tops (look out for the chimney owl very - common locally) My window was left open alnight and lead to a very pleasant nights sleep in a very comfortable bed. Bathroom lets them down but I could only imagine it awaits an upgrade. Breakfast was delicious; well presented and with a large variety of local produce. The terrace was a nice added feature overlooking a small but adequate pool. All in all a lovely stay and yes I would happily return.

Dear Guest, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and hope that you felt the short drive up hill is worth it for the fantastic views you then got from your room. Jerry misses you and hopes that you will stay for longer next time.

We had stayed in this hotel before and our experience had been much better. The hotel is nice and pleasant, they welcome you very warmly. And I like that they supply enough drinking water in your room (it is free).
The most perfect person in the hotel was receptionist Alex. The chef was perfect (the food was really delicious) and the hotel was very clean. Our room had a beautiful view but we had booked a more expensive room, but except for that it was quite small.
There is no lift and the car park is really small with small parking spaces (we had to park in the street not very close to the hotel)
I must write that SUCH A PERFECT CHEF DOES NOT DESERVE SUCH A TERRIBLE STAFF in the restaurant. We had booked our table for 7PM, arrived at 7PM, but got table at 19.50, we had planned to go for a walk after dinner but we finished with the dinner at about 22.30. We had to wait for the dessert menu for almost half an hour. We had to ask for almost everything several times. The memebers of the staff talked at the bar with the headwaiter, backward. They did not watch the restaurant and did not look at the guests. At breakfast time I asked for some ketchup - but I was told that they had run out of ketchup. In the past we had been really happy with this hotel but at this time we were not.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are a bit bigger but still quite small. There is no lift and steep stairs.

Please note
This review relates to July 2013 [not 2014]

The reference to prices paid and the consequent value score are untrue, a trick of memory perhaps, but we have checked and verified our records.
This guest stayed twice in 2012 and once in 2013 in the same standard of room - Superior Sea View which is our top priced room - and paid the same rate each time - in fact stayed in the same room in 2013 that she did in 2012 on request. Having been perfectly happy to pay the price on 3 separate occasions - we cannot think but that she was quite satisfied with the value she got.

As for the poor restaurant service on the night she dined, there is no excuse, it reflects a poor manager at the time who was with us for two months only and hopefully does not reflect the kind of service available now in the restaurant.

We stayed at the Penzance for two nights of our driving tour of the south of England. The Penzance staff made our stop very comfortable. Our meals were very nice and well presented. We did not give our title as we did not want to be treated any differently than others at that time. We will return in 2015 for a longer stay as we did not see all in the south which we wanted to explore. Thank you once again.

we spent 2 weeks in the Hotel Penzance in rather unfortunate circumstances, our house burn't down.
The staff in the hotel could not have been more kind and helpful, and the room, even after 2 weeks was fine. as usual parking can be a bit of a trauma.
I would have rated the whole experience excellent, but the restaurant is not quite what it was, front of house management needs sorting out.

Our first impressions of the hotel were excellent: downstairs was comfortable, well maintained and we received a polite, informative welcome. We mentioned on arrival that on the final morning of our bed and breakfast booking we would be leaving very early to travel to the Scilly Isles. This was a first opportunity for a member of staff to explain ways in which the hotel might help with early breakfast but the opportunity was missed.
Our room was spacious and clean; having everything we needed but it was as lacking in character as any room we have seen in a Premier Inn! We had views of the harbour and Sainsbury's. It was great to have such lovely weather but we didn't appreciate the five am wake-up, due to the very thin curtains allowing the sun to stream in. The room was unbearably hot and the duvet winter weight. Some blinds might help!
Our experience in the restaurant matched that described in some other reviews. Some staff were courteous and helpful when we made requests; others were very superior and made us feel they were putting themselves out. There was a general lack of initiative: why did we need to ask regularly for more coffee or for our plates to be cleared? On one occasion we had to get up and search for a member of staff because no one visited our table to see if we needed anything. On the second morning we asked for the table we had used the previous day. This was refused as it was set for four. Ten minutes later, two settings were removed and a couple invited to sit down.
Some guests clearly were having a different experience, with staff fussing over them and their loud demands met quickly and pleasantly.
The hotel has an inviting heated pool, which was closed each evening when we arrived back from days out and would have loved a swim before dinner. The gardens are beautiful and well tended by the friendly gardener.
There is a car park, which may be large enough to accommodate all the guests' cars, but due to inconsiderate parking by a particular guest with an over-sized vehicle, we ended up on the street.
The hotel has room service but only on five nights of the week. We asked what breakfast arrangements would be possible for a 7:30 departure. There was a grudging offer of,
"Perhaps we could get some cereals sent up the evening before." In the event, a delicious continental breakfast tray arrived in our room the night before departure. Why couldn't that just have been offered in the first place and why not in the morning? So disappointing for an hotel which is situated right opposite the Scillonian ferry quay. Surely it's a regular thing for guests to leave early?
Value for money - definitely not. I suggest staff go en-mass to some of the less prestigious establishments on Scilly and learn about good, friendly hospitality.

Dear Jo,
I apologise for the faults you encountered on your stay with us mid-summer. It's not the experience of most of our guests and we'll take steps to prevent any occurrence.
Checking your reservation, you requested a quiet room, and were allocated the only room without neighbours on any side or above or below. Unfortunately it does face east and the rising sun. This early light problem has never been brought to our attention before, the curtains being hand made and fully lined, but as you say perhaps a blackout blind in addition could be considered. The 2 fully opening sash windows have also been sufficient ventilation previously, but we carry many fans for guests that wish to have more cooling in their room, also in our room information folder there is a section on bedding with alternatives to choose from which are available on request to make you more comfortable.
Guests travelling to the Scilly Isles stay with us often all year and are usually happy with our 07.15 start breakfast with plenty of time left to get to the ferry or airport for 09.00 - in fact our continental buffet is normally laid out by 07.00 making it an infrequent [but not unusual] request to have a room service tray - but this is available too as part of our 5 days a week 24 hour room service, or brought to your room by 22.30 the night before on the 2 night's a week when the Night Porter is off and we only have night sleeping security staff on duty.
This is all detailed in the room information folder.
For 15 weeks from the middle of June we do have 2 Austrian hospitality students arrive to work here as part of their professional education - they wear identifying badges so guests can understand their role. Although they speak fluent English, they are shy at first as they familiarise themselves with the processes in the restaurant and take a week or two to try to understand their role and responsibilities. I think your comments would indicate that you may have experienced one or other of these students who came across poorly in terms of customer service. It would not have been intentional and although no consolation to you, only temporary.

We usually stay in 3 star but decided to Treat Ourselves to a first class stay for a few days. The place is ok but not luxurious. We came to England on the Queen Mary 2 and these people think they are in the same class or higher but that is far from reality. The greeting was briefly friendly but we then had to carry some heavy luggage up three floors to an attick room. The room itself was ok and clean but just getting up there started turning us on the place. Dinner was also overpriced with small portions but palatable. We walk a lot but it would be a challenge to walk to town. Or anywhere. Coffee was not replenished in the room and calls to the desk were unanswered as was the bell at the desk. Spent almost double our normal and got less than half.

Room Tip: Spend less and get more elsewhere.

Dear visitor, I hope we have identified you correctly as the American guests who made a last minute reservation on June 26th . If not, I apologise if I'm misinformed.
I'm not sure what you were expecting, but I'm sorry we appear not to have lived up to your expectations, we do try to be honest and transparent in our dealings with our guests as it benefits no one to be disappointed.

The hotel does not present itself as equivalent to a 5 star ocean liner - though it's flattering you think so, it is assessed as a 4 star Town House Hotel and has complete details on the website showing the scope of our facilities and services. It is situated 300m from the transport interchange, and the High Street and 500m from the Harbour. Our staff go out of their way to offer service with a smile for everyone who makes their requirements known and although there may be times when our reception staff are away from the front desk momentarily assisting someone, they carry a cordless extension with them and direct guests to an internal phone to call for attention. I'll investigate why your calls appear to have gone unanswered.
The hotel is built over a ground floor of public rooms and 2 floors of guest rooms, making 2 flights of stairs, there is no lift, but luggage assist is always offered both on arrival and departure, so there really was no need for you to have struggled with your luggage.
The late rate you paid was £110 per night [to put your last comment in perspective for others] as it was the last available room.
