Owner description: Set in lush sub-tropical gardens, Newquay Zoo is home to more than 1,000 of the world's rare and exciting creatures. Just a short walk from Newquay's town centre and world famous surfing beaches, the Zoo is both one of Cornwall's most exciting visitor attractions and a leading conservation charity. It's the only place in Cornwall where you can see lions devour their lunch before taking a leisurely stroll through a tropical rainforest, surrounded by free flying birds. Keeper talks and animal feeds take place throughout the day but if you fancy an even closer animal encounter we offer visitors the chance to meet and feed our cheeky lemurs, friendly penguins and impossibly cute meerkats! See wildebeest, waterbuck, nyala antelope and zebra roaming in our African Savannah and enjoy some familiar faces in The Village Farm - one of our most popular exhibits which includes many children's favourites such as pot-bellied pigs, African pygmy goats, turkeys and striped squirrels. And if all that isn't enough to keep the kids amused, we also have activity trails, face painting, a children's play area, dragon maze...and much more. Besides enjoying a great family day out, when you visit Newquay Zoo you'll also be supporting our vital education, research and conservation work, all designed to protect endangered animals from extinction. We're playing a key role in the international effort to save animals through conservation breeding.

“Been to better zoo's”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013 via mobile

A fairly small zoo. Reasonably priced but animals seemed to be lacking. Lots of animal's also seemed to be board especially the poor lions which looked to be in a very small in closure with no stimulation, very sad. Also all ice cream/snack bars were closed. Surely it's not out of season just yet. Also I think staff need to monitor people who are walking around with fags. Not pleasent to walk behind and surely not good for the animals.

“Lovely family zoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013 via mobile

Just visited with family including two year old granddaughter and infirm husband and had a super visit. The zoo is not so big that you are exhausted just walking around it and there are plenty of places to sit and rest a while. Disabled parking right outside as there is a bit of a walk up if you do have to park at the bottom. Exhibits generally good although I do think some updating needed - particularly for the lions, but animals obviously well cared for and seem happy. The restaurant is quite small and people still persist in taking buggies in despite a notice asking you not to, perhaps this could be enforced as it could be quite dangerous with hot food/drinks etc - however food was lovely. Petting area could perhaps have had more to pet as only billy goats there to be stroked but excellent hand washing facilities for afterwards. We enjoyed our day and purchased an annual membership from one of the numerous and hard working members of staff.

“Very good zoo - from experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

I am an Animal Management Student at degree level so have a lot of experience of zoos and although Newquay was relatively small, it contained a wide variety of species in well sized enclosures. All animals appeared healthy and active. Enrichment was available to all animals and there were no signs of undesirable captive animal behaviours. The creativity and originality of the enclosures showed that Newquay is constantly working to improve the environment, such as using lakes and water as a barrier rather than large fences.

Zoos are usually expensive to visit, but it must be considered that the animals require feeding which often costs large amounts of money, and also experienced staff need to be employed to maintain high welfare levels. Not only this, but donations for conservation projects is vital to ensure that the aims of the zoo are reached to preserve and boost numbers of important species.
