I lived in Newquay for 5 years from 87 - 92 and boy has it changed - I returned for the first time this year on the back of some excellent weather in August and with the purchase of a tent and a recommeded campsite off we went. The kids loved it and so did we. We noticed the changes but more than that the drive was around 3 hours quicker for some reason, we did Manchester - Newquay in 5 1/2 hours, fantastic. The only downside was that there wasn't any 'us' time - we needed a nostalgic visit and fast. So the week after the kids were packed off to Grandmas and I set about the internet TRYING to find a room for the weekend. Not a cat in hells chance at such short notice. Eventually I found one that would take us on the Friday and then the Whipsiderry which had a room on the Saturday (rather accommodating, in the scheme of things as most hotels highlighted a min 2 night stay). Friday night we spent in a mediocre newquay hotel with a balcony and sea view but the worst breakfast ever and then on Saturday we made our way to a very unspoilt Porth only minutes outside Newquay and were very pleased at our little find. Larry a very happy worker met us at reception and took us on a tour of the hotel whilst also introducing us to equally happy guests (never before as this happened anywhere). Lisa and Andy the owners make you feel more than welcome - each guest we spoke to told us of there annual return there over the years, the only gripe we had and is a rather small one was that our room wasn't very big but we know it was the only one they had left and that we were only staying the one night. Also we didn't point out this gripe during our stay so I probably shouldn't be mentioning it on here as they can't possibly rectify it now can they.....
So why have we given the Whipsiderry 5 stars?
The hotel is clean, clean, clean
There is a bar
a television room
A lounge area
The other guests meet in these areas and Andy & Lisa soon have you joining in the conversation and really feeling part of the crowd - However, it is definitely not a clique.
Outside there are beautiful lawns, a huge free carpark for guests, an outside pool (small but adequate)
Fantastic sea views
The cost includes a 6 course evening meal and breakfast to which a choice of menu is given at both and the desserts are not to be missed so don't go over filling yourself. TIP: Don't have lunch as you will leave no room for this mammouth feast
Newquay, Watergate Bay and Padstow are minutes away - some of the guests were off in search of the Doc Holliday filming location - we were directed to Padstow for Fish & Chips it was worth the trip.
A message to Jack, thanks for the very interesting conversation and notes on fishing on the island which Pete has kept for future reference.
Lisa & Andy you obviously work really hard and it doesn't go unoticed - We think you are the pride of Newquay hospitality
We will return soon
Sharon & Pete
