“It's ok. Not great, not bad but very good value.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2011 via mobile

We stayed here on 3rd & 4th Feb. It was a great deal. £29 per double room per night, without breakfast. They charge 7.95 for breakfast but there's a nice cafe at the train station (just over the road) which does good food at half the price. The hotel is a bit dated, but does the job. Room was ok, bathroom dated. It seems that they've refurbished the main reception bar area but not the rooms. As a cheap stop over, it does what the cost suggests.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2011

Well where do you start, having been sceptical about Newquay and its reputation as a booze capital what a surpirse I found.
The Great Western is just an absolute little gem, far enough away from Newquay town Centre (10minute walk) but close enough to everything to really be able to relax. The Hotel itself was obviously a fantastic hotel in the 50s, and keeping still some of that charm with modern refurbishment has excelled in itself to produce a real touch of class.
The staff and service was second to none and still keeps that pubish charm with hotel professionalism.
Although we were away visiting local businesses, I would definately come back in the off season to make the most of what a lovely place Newquay is.
Thank you again to all at the Great Western.

+ The hotel itself is fantastic, with the referb it looked really nice. And very central in Newquay. Had AMAZING views.
- The staff (receptionists) were unbelievably rude and not helpful at all !! the ruined my stay to be honest or i would be giving the hotel a much higher mark.
The room i stayed in was very old and warn and nothing like the photos shown. When i walked past other rooms open for cleaning next door and all up my hall in the hotel, they was very modern and clean.
+ The only plus point for this hotel is, the cleaning staff are lovely and are the only friendly staff i came across.

I booked a room for 2 of us on laterooms.com and it really was a late booking. Booked at 2240 hours on november 28th and we were checked in at 1500 hours on the 29th. Staff were friendly and the lady on reception seemed cheery enough. We were offered parking for £5 but me being a tight wad i decided to park on the back road. We were given a room to the front of the hotel over looking the car park and bus stop but we didn't hear a thing as the windows are sturdy. The furniture in the room was dated but hey who cares. I dont wanna unload my overnight case in a new generic chest of drawers. The bed was really comfy and the room was warm and secure. The bathroom again seemed dated but i believe some modernisation is taking place throughout the hotel so maybe room 105's will come. We could hear the blokes tv through the walls but again who cares. we dont all have the hearing of a nosey neighbour.
We were within 1/4 mile of the main town and walked around to find a nice place to eat.
We found one and walked back to the ideally located Great Western Hotel.
I know Newquay can be a pain in the backside in season (i drive a bus in and around the place) but out of season everything feels right. No rip off for those wanting to seek out a good time.
A great value, friendly and just right hotel.

We were little bit worried about this town's reputation but we chose the best month and a midweek for this visit and throughly enjoyed ourselves. I was especially impressed when we arrived to find that a reserved notice in our name was ready and waiting for us as so many hotels don't always take note of special requirements. The hotel is situated on the cliffside of the road and this offered a magnificient view of the beaches from the terrace and the beer garden or if you are lucky enough to get a sea view room. We settled for a value room which was at the side of the hotel and although on the small side it still offered all the facilities that is required these days from a hotel (tea & coffee facilities, television, hairdryer and en suite). Downside, hotel a little dated & tired.
We did not eat in the hotel mainly because there was a Wetherspoons just 5 minutes away and as committed spoonies, we know our favourites that Wetherspoons offer.
There was a bus stop right outside the hotel with buses that took you all over Cornwell so the car stayed behind and we just enjoyed the scenery from the top of a double decker.

Always stay at this hotel at least twice a year, its great value for money and central to everything, you can upgrade to nicer roms if you wish, but whats the point, you are only there to sleep and wash, it maybe a little dated but look at the price you paid. Will see you soon great western. xx
