“well worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2011

we book for my husbands 60th birtday took my elder son and girlfriend and my husband, myself and my younger son of 14. we had a family room which had a balcony overlooking the estuary and what a view. Well worth requesting this is you can.
Family room hada seperate annex for my son with bunk beds again a nice touch as it gave us all privacy.
Hotel 10min walk from NEWQUAY lovely and quiet which for us was a bonus. We also requested a Birthday cake which they very kindly supplied.
Only wish to could have stayed longer! California Bowls well worth a visit, but book if like us you are only staying a few nights, a bit expensive but worth it!

This hotel was not cheep and staying their ruined my holiday. It l had a fusty smell that lingered, was extreamly unclean and smelly and there was no customer service at all. It's a shame because the views were nice, but what's the point in a nice view when your surroundings are horrible?

Room Tip: aviod them!!!

Our experience was that whilst this is an ageing property, which is not good value for money during peak season, the staff were nice and breakfast was adequate.

this hotel made me think i was in another country with indoor and outdoor pools, the view was incredible, i read bad reviews after i had booked the hotel and was expecting the worst but once we arrived to the hotel,i was impressed. i dont know how some of the bad reviews were written as this hotel was worth every penny, very friendley staff and clean rooms. I would definately go back again.

Spread over more than 3 floors (including the bedrooms), with both an indoor & outdoor swimming pool, an indoor bowling alley, several bars, a stunning fireplace, a huge flat screen TV in the function room and staff who truly added to our stay (we actually left them a thank you card). The only fly in the ointment was that dinner was disappointing.
PS. Try The Lewinnik (probably not spelt right) restaurant/bar which is a 15 minute walk or a short drive along the headland from Hotel California. The food & view there is fantastic & it's location allows you to go for a walk with great views either before or after your meal or drink

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the back the views are worth walking up to

The first 2 rooms we were given were so dismal and grubby that we asked if we could be moved.Unfortunately we had already paid for the rooms for 5 nights on arrival as requested, otherwise we would have left there and then. The next 2 rooms were slightly better but still grubby and smelled musty. The whole hotel is old and desperately in need of refurbishing and updating. The furniture was ancient and dirty and even the bread for toasting at breakfast was mouldy one morning. By the 3rd morning i felt so depressed that i asked my Dad if we could just cut our losses and go home.We were given a small refund. It was a huge releif to get the hell out of there!I am going to write to the AA to complain about the hotel having a 3 star rating.THe photos on the website were very deceiving.

Room Tip: Do not book a room at all!

We chose this setting for our school prom, and had a wonderful evening.
The staff were welcoming and helpful also the views were stunning for the photographs.
All students and staff really enjoyed the three course meal and the hotel were so accommodating we were able to personalise our many tables with style.
