“Great find on outskirts of Newquay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

Had 3 great nights at the hotel. Everything was spotless and the staff were excellent. All pulled together as a great team and made the stay really enjoyable. Each evening they provided us with ice buckets and glasses for our champagne and fresh milk for our tea and coffee.
Eggs at breakfast were disappointing and the shower whilst really strong made the bathroom into a wet room no matter what you did to prevent it!
Would definitely return with family and friends.

Room Tip: I would ask for sea view.

We stayed here for a long weekend in July and, being extremely lucky with the weather, the proximity to the beach was a real bonus. The hotel has it's own path down to the beach, however it was a little overgrown and would be tricky for those unsteady on their feet. Information about access to the beach (or anything else actually useful) was not provided in the room, and this path was only discovered by exploration.

Due to the weather, our room was extremely warm at night. We kept the windows open to provide some relief, but got a lot of noise from the kitchen below - we heard some very interesting conversations by the staff! By contrast, the conservatory bar was wonderfully airy, and was a real pleasure to relax in, having views of the beach and Korev lager on tap.

All the staff we came into contact with were extremely helpful and polite - although I was a little surprised not to be offered help with our luggage up the stairs (especially as the receptionist joked about how much we had!).

One major disappointment was the full Cornish breakfast. The plate of cooked food we got looked as though it had been kept hot for a while, as everything had dried up. Also, the fruit juice and milk for the cereal had been sat out for a while too, as they were both unpleasantly warm. Both my partner and myself felt a little queasy after that first breakfast. So much so, that we did not return for breakfast on the other two mornings - and also declined the cream tea that had been included in our package price. Consequently, we decided not to venture into the restaurant for an evening meal.

Talking of eating, be warned that nothing is open for food after 9pm in Porth - including the pub which was full of people. The hotel's restaurant also stops serving at 9pm (room service stops at 2:30 in the afternoon!). We had to walk up the hill into Newquay to find some food at 9:30pm, then had to race back to the hotel before they locked us out at 11pm - yes, you need to ask for a special 'late key' if you want to stay out late.

Now this all sound like a long list of niggles, but looking back, I would stay at the Porth Veor again - for the location if nothing else. Particularly as the hotel also offers a significant discount for returning guests.

Room Tip: No food in Porth after 9pm!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback, it is appreciated.

I would like to take the opportunity to address a couple of your niggles to offer some reassurance to you, should you wish to book and stay with us again, which we hope you do!

With regards to our room service menu, this is available up to 9pm when the kitchen closes for the day and our bar menu runs from 12pm - 5pm. Beaucliffes Restaurant is then open from 5.30pm until 9pm.

For the majority of our guests this has proven to be a flexible time frame in which to offer food. It is a shame that your experience of breakfast on your first day led you to choose not to eat with us again. As you mentioned, our staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and had you mentioned to them your concerns, they would have done all they could to ensure that you left the restaurant happy and having enjoyed your meal.

We have also reviewed our policy on late night returns to the hotel and our 'night key' is now issued as standard on arrival so that guests who are looking to enjoy the night life in Newquay can do so without having to swap keys before heading out.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope to see you back at Porth Veor Manor in the future.

Kindest Regards

Jamie

I have had two trips to Porth Veor this year 22nd-29th June in the Apartments and 21st-26thy July in Hotel/Apartments and love the place. I have now stayed there 7 times in total and have never had any problems. I have noticed that other reviewers have commented on the comfort of the sofa bed and would agree that for two adults it could do with a deeper mattress. My only other point would be that you can only really seat 5 comfortably on the settee and two chairs, when I stayed in the hotel they had really comfortable Cane chairs in the rooms, so maybe you should be able to request one of those as an extra seat. The great thing about the complex is that you can just park your car and walk either to beach or town. The breakfast in the hotel is superb and can be block booked for £6 by people in the apartments. It would also be nice if the pool could open a little earlier but you can al;ways ring reception and ask and they do their best.

Room Tip: From what I can gather if you have a 2nd floor room in hotel you may hyave more steps to walk but it...

This was our fourth stay in one of the villas and our third in Villa 1 which is our favourite. We love being able to sit outside the villa watching the kids in the pool.

The standards were as high as always. A previous reviewer mentioned the TV reception being disappointing and I have to agree that upgrades are probably due but we don't come on holiday to watch TV so not a problem for us. Everthing else was perfect as always.

We stayed for a week and had a fantastic holiday. Having toured Cornwall extensively on our previous stays we decided this time that we would stay close to the villa and enjoy the pool and the beautiful beach at Porth ( a very short walk from the hotel).

We had the most enjoyable and relaxing holiday and the kids sobbed when it was time to say goodbye to the friends they had made around the pool. They are begging us to re book for next year.

I'm sure we will be back as we have struggled to find anywhere else that gives us the standard of accommodation that the villas at the Porth Veor provide.

Thank you once again for a fantastic stay.

We have just returned from a short break in one of the villas at Porth Veor. The villa was really lovely - clean and well equiped with lovely views of the beach. We enjoyed the balcony especially. The pool was fantastic - very warm. The restaurant was excellent and very good value. The location was also very good for everythng - especially surfing at nearby Watergate Bay and great walks on the headland between Porth and Watergate. The staff were always helpful. However, there were just a few things that weren't very good. The main problem was the sofa bed. The property is described as being suitable for 6 people with a high quality sofa bed in the lounge. This sofa bed was very, very uncomfortable with a matress that was about only an inch/inch and a half thick. My husband and I barely slept in 4 nights. The lounge was also very hot. The proper bedrooms were lovely and I would recommend the villa for 4 people only - definately not for 6. Another point to watch for is that the hotel allows all male/female groups to rent the appartments. I don't think this is great on a family holiday. I was in the pool with my children and we were suddenly surounded by a fairly large group of men who got in and were throwing a ball around the pool. When the ball hit my son in the face - we got out! Not a perfect ending to what had been a nice afternoon. Just a couple of minor quibbles to finish - the tatty work van parked next to our villa seemed a pity when the rest of the area had been so nicely lanndscaped!! And the TV picture was terrible and the channels did not correspond to any particular number - spent some time guessing what the channels were!

Room Tip: Villas facing beach do have a lovely view - but beware uncomfortable sofa bed if you are going as a...

Many thanks for your kind feedback. I'm sorry that not all of your stay met your expectations.

Please be assured that it is not a general rule that we allow groups of the same gender to book our apartments. This is only permitted in exceptional circumstances as we are acutely aware that this type of group does not always blend well with family groups. Your point on this matter is duly noted and we will review the timing of when it is appropriate to make exceptions to our general policy of not accepting groups bookings of either all male or all female guests.

It is also only fair to point out we have had other group bookings this year that have not caused any disruption to other guests so perhaps on this occasion it was an exception as opposed to the norm.

Thank you also for your feedback on the sofa bed and the TV, this will be duly attended to by our maintenance and housekeeping teams.

Kindest Regards
