“Great Short Break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

What a lovely situated hotel, very clean, staff just couldn't do enough for you. Both evening meal, cream tea and breakfast very tasty, plenty of choice. We stayed in room 17 although not sea view very well appointed, comfortable bed, only one down point shower room a bit dark, light did not seem to work above sink. The hotel is on our return list.

An excellent welcome by the Receptionist Mawean (not sure if spelling correct!) who gave us excellent service and advice, Extremely efficient and helpful with lovely friendly personality.
On arrival our Superior Sea view room was available, but it was very disappointing (No. 28) as it was a dark room due to being in the corner of the building, right at the top of narrow stairs, and the window partially blocked by a large tree right outside which took away as well half the view. We immediately went back to Mawean and explained this and asked for a new room. The Hotel was virtually fully booked but she was extremely helpful and gave us for two nights a family room No. 11 which was much better. For our last two nights she arranged for us to have one of the two bedroom villas No. 7 and this again was very pleasant.
Suggestions to make the stay better.
The mattresses are very very soft and I think better quality double ones would improve the sleep quality. In the room No. 11 you have to meddle with the window lock to enable opening fully which is required in warm weather.
The swimming pool which is heated only opens at 9.30am, far too late, 7am would be better to enable a swim before breakfast.
Breakfast choice on buffet side, rather limited for choice, cooked breakfast very good. Staff excellent, although some orders seemed to be a bit hit and miss, but they were really helpful and friendly.
Wifi did not work in the Hotel room and again hit and miss in the other rooms. In the villas worked really well.
Agree with the 3 star rating for the Hotel and 4 star for the villas.
Bus stop just down the road with an hourly bus service if you really need to go into Newquay but its a nice walk to there and took us 30 minutes. Very disappointed with Newquay, probably ok for stag nights etc but that's about it. Quite run down and what Council would allow an Aldi supermarket to be built overlooking the beach !? The Council should really get its act together and clear up the place.
So Hotel location good if you are touring and using as a base, but car parking charges are very high in the coastal resorts. The National Trust have good car parks though on some beaches so if you are a member that's an advantage.
Villas quite good for families but quite a sloping walk to the beach and the beach path spoilt by dog owners who have not cleared up after their dogs have performed. Not pleasant in places.
We had poor weather for all the 4 days and did not see the sun, so did watch some TV in the Hotel and surprised that we had SKY HD Sports in our room, which with the Rugby on in Australia very useful. Management please retune the TVs so they match your schedule.
You really do need good weather here as otherwise very limited activities.
Evening meal is pricey unless you have the specials between 6pm and 7pm which are more reasonable.
Overall the friendly service was a good factor

Room Tip: If choosing a superior room with sea view, then avoid room 28 as the room is on the dark side, right...

Stayed with my family in Porth Voer Villas, it was the nicest place I have stayed very modern villa with heated swimming pool outside. Food in the Hotel restaurant was superb, staff were very friendly. Good location, lovely castal walks nearby. I would definately recommend this hotel and the Villas. Will definately be going back.

This hotel was very nice, pleasently decorated and very clean and tidy.
Excellent view from the room.
I don't like to be overly negative, but there were a few things that disappointed us, after reading a few reviews I kind of expected some of them.
We were on the top floor, so a steep staircase climb is required, additionally as others have mentioned, it was very hot in the room, whilst the window opened fully the air was not able to circulate making it quite hot.
The shower also had trouble maintaining temperature it was either very hot or very cold.
The WifI didn't work, and I asked a member of staff what the problem was, however it seemed a little beyond what they could do, nevertheless they tried to help.
My girlfriend isn't a great lover of fish, and in the morning at breakfast the restuarant smelled of cooked fish, this instantly turned her stomoch and she got up and left.
The hotel is a £7 taxi ride from the centre of Newquay as well, I couldn't find this on many reviews.
The hotel in all was very nice, just a few minor things spoiled it a little, hence only Very Good not excellent, I feel the management appreciate the shortcomings from the other reviews, and they are keen to work on them. However overall a nice stay.

Room Tip: Higher Floors can be quite hot in the summer.

This was our first visit to Porth Veor, the location was fantastic easy walking into Newquay. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the staff very pleasant. Our only downside was the cooked breakfast which didn't quite live up to expectation. We would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: We chose to have a beach view room, but was a lot of stairs!

This was our first visit to the Porth Veor Manor, and we weren't disappointed. The staff were all most helpful and friendly, and the general standard of the hotel is superb. Cleanliness is most important and the place was spotless in both public areas and the bedrooms. The conservatory is most relaxing for a drink at any time of day or evening and enjoys wonderful views over Porth beach. Car parking is plentiful and the apartments are allocated their own numbered space so there is no confusion. Breakfast is excellent and again the restaurant overlooks well tendered grounds and the Porth beach so a very pleasant environment in which to eat and relax. It is just far enough away from the more downmarket area of central Newquay, but there is a very pleasant cliff top walk which takes about 20 minutes for shopping or eating without having to take the car. The location is ideal for touring Cornwall and you are situated on the coast road to Watergate Bay and Padstow. Overall a most enjoyable stay and at a very reasonable cost so we will definitely be returning.

My wife and I stayed at apartment no.2 it is a spacious 2 bed roomed apartment finished to a high spec, it is very clean and well maintained. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We dined in the restaurant one of the nights and had an excellent 3 course meal with wine for a very reasonable £70. The balcony overlooks a small round pool area that works very well. The countryside around here is great with coastal paths and beautiful beaches all within easy walking distance
