“Room not Bad, excellent staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2010

Stayed in a standard room with sea view with my wife and 3 year old child, we booked this hotel as it seemed to be aimed at families rather more than our first choice hotel "The Bay" (the Esplanade hotels' sibling hotel).

The frontage of the hotel wasn't the most inspiring but inside, the ground floor was very pleasant. The reception was friendly and efficient, a trait we found to be common throughout our short stay with almost all staff encountered.

Our room on the second floor was OK. The carpets in the room were a bit tired looking and looked like they needed a good clean. There were a few irritations that need some sort of staff intervention when servicing the rooms, like the kettle lead needing replacing due to exposed single insulation on the flex and the curtain rail handing on by a thread! The windows were pretty grimy, and although I accept the hotel is literally on the sea front (one of it's major plusses) they could do more to clean the windows more regularly.

The facilities were great. A decent pool and children's areas. The restaurant was very good and the breakfasts first class. Ate once in the evening and found the prices quite expensive although as we dined with a discount voucher courtesy of the hotel this was much more acceptable. The food was generally good and service excellent with attentive hostesses who were superb with our daughter.

All in all, the hotel offered reasonable prices. We would prefer a higher standard in our rooms and if we were to book here again we would probably choose one of their "Best" rooms for higher standards. Again, this hotel was booked because it seemed marketed towards families more than it's 4 star sibling at The Bay.

Booked 3 rooms for the weekend, and the reception and staff are very welcoming, the view is wonderful. As hotels go in newquay, this is very good.
Its a pleasant walk to the main town, or a taxi away.
If I could improve it, it would be the outside of the bar, its a concrete square for smokers. and the swimming pool was cloudy and dull. However you can use the facilities 100 yards away at "the bay", which I did, and the bar was elegant, and the pool facilities top notch. The Bay is more expensive, so the Esplanade is a cheap way to get the best of both.
The car parking is also tight and minimal, but thats common in Newquay. I have stayed before and would stay again, but if money was no object, just upgrade to the Bay.
NB - 10 min walk up the cliff takes you to the amazing LLewinick lodge on the cliff, which is hidden gem of newquay. Go for lunch and sit on the balcony.

As usual, this was a last minute booking for us with our 3 9 year olds and our 3 year old! After our very long trip and having hauled the kids and luggage to our room, we were very pleased with the room - although it did take a bit of organisation as to who would get the private room with its own balcony and sea view (let's just say my partner and I won!) We have been going to the hotel as a family for the last 5 years, although my partner has been going for over 30 years and the service on reception, in the bar and restaurant is consistently good. It was my 10 year old daughter's birthday during our stay and we booked her 2 surf lessons at the school next door. Although we can recommend a very good local restaurant, we also ate at the hotel and were very happy with our choice - the hotel had also arranged my daughter a birthday cake which was great. We always use the pool when we stay and this time was no exception. There was also entertainment on during our visit which we enjoyed and the kids enjoy the play areas. All in all, if you are looking for a well located friendly hotel with great sea views and facilities, we would strongly recommend the Esplanade.

We arrived on spec in the middle of a downpour - the Hotel offered an oasis of comfort amid the storm - what a view!!

The staff could not be more helpful and we had a very pleasant (albeit too short stay)

We stayed here for 2 nights and we found the hotel and staff to be of an excerllent standard. There was things going on at the hotel for my 6 year old to do swimming, soft play, outside play area, and a daily event in the bar. The rooms were basic but were clean and we did pay extra for a room with a view which was an extra 30.00 although the windows were really dirty so there wasnt much of a view unless you opened the window and looked out. If i was to be picky the tv was also a let down as its fixed to the wall and unless you sat in the correct view line the tv wasnt clear enough to see, so this could do with being up on a stand to swivel round and the parking can be a tough to find somewhere to park. However i found my stay here to be enjoyable and would recommend to other people with children.

Stayed at The Esplanade and loved it. We went with our two year old and she had a great time. Perfect location, good value, great food, friendly staff - all in all brilliant.

We just spent one night there, and enjoyed the great sea view, but that was about it. We got an upgrade for one room, which was nice. The other room had a very old bed, where you could feel every individual bedspring. The windows, also those of the patio, can't have been cleaned in weeks (lots of seagulls!).
We decided not to go out in the rain and have dinner in the restaurant: Don't do it ! Menu prices are not what they tell you in the folder in your room. Poor food considering the price, and they can't do the math: First they forgot the 20% reduction for hotel guests, then it turned out to be somewhat near 15%. Very nice waiters, though, willing to explain about surfing!

Thank you Helra for your comments. I'm sorry to hear about the mix up in the restuarant. Vouchers are often given out to guests on arrival and these need to be shown to the waiter during the meal to apply, we apologise if this was not clear. We will look into the incorrect information in the room folders.
