“A disaster and a joke!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2010

Went last night for dinner in Silks restaurant. Got kept waiting ages before our order was taken.

There was a large table in the restaurant (which turned out to be the owners). All the staff were so busy "clucking" around this table that everybody else was being ignored!

There were probably about 25 people eating in the restaurant in total. We finally managed to place our order. Then another long wait with so much fuss going on around the owners table that it was a joke.

In the end we gave up and cancelled our order. No apology, but we were told that there was a backlog in the kitchen (can't they even serve 25 people!). So we left to go and eat somewhere else.

Don't be tricked by the promotion deals. On a stay in March we were overcharged by £30 on the basis that their special room rate offer finished on our last night and they charged us full rate. After we left the hotel we dicovered that the offer had not finished and had been extended to the end of the month.I have made numerous phone calls and sent various letters, faxes and E-Mails to the Director and Owner requesting a response and a refund. They haven't even got the courtesy to reply. Obviously once they have got your money you are no longer of any interest to them. Here's a tip - they ask you to pay up front for your accomodation when you arrive - don't !! just in case you have a problem. Treat them with the contempt they treat you with.

Having read some very average reports on Tripadvisor I knew we were taking a bit of a risk booking two nights here but it was significantly cheaper than the Headland where we have previously stayed but a similar location. We were seduced by the pictures of the newly updated rooms on the website so decided to have a punt. I have to say it was all pretty good and was excellent value for money and we made a good decision to stay here.

We had a sea view superior room which was an interesting mix of modern (42” plasma) and old school (glass chandeliers). The room was average size and the bed was quite large and very comfortable, indeed one of the most comfortable beds I have slept on in a hotel. There were a couple of comfy chairs and a small coffee table. We were asked at check in of we wanted the mini bar unlocked, which we did and there was plenty of room to store our own drinks if needed. There were the usual tea, coffee, biscuits etc and this was the only poor part of our stay as they were not replenished the next day. Having reported this we were given quite a lot of extra packs of biscuits and a jug of fresh milk rather than the usual little pots. There was a small safe and a reasonable amount of storage space in the form of a wardrobe and set of drawers as well as a writing desk. We were lucky in that our room was very quiet and we had no noise problems on either night as reported by previous quests.
The bathroom was quite spacious, very modern in design with a good size bath, separate shower and some good quality soap products. There were not enough shelves but is there ever in any hotel bathroom anywhere in the world!

We had dinner in both restaurants and they are both ok. They have made a brave attempt to be different by installing a sushi conveyer belt in one restaurant and it looked very appetising but we never saw anyone eating at it which is a shame. I have always thought of sushi as lunchtime fare hence we didn’t go for it but opted for the Italian option which is in the same restaurant as the sushi belt. The other restaurant, Silks is more upmarket and seemed very popular but the food and service in both was more than acceptable. There is a bar at one end of Silks and it makes for a nice chill out area with views over Newquay town. Outside of the Italian restaurant there is a decking area with wonderful views out over the Atlantic, a great place to watch the sun set from.

Breakfast is self service and you are given a table which is “yours” for the duration of your stay. Eggs are cooked fresh to order and tea and toast is brought to the table as is the norm. The staff were very friendly, a common trait we found throughout our stay. Outside the breakfast room there are seats spread out around a corridor which leads past reception and it’s here that it’s best to sit if using the free wi-fi as it’s next to the router.

All told a good stay and we would definitely stay here again.

For the price we paid I expected more. Although rooms have been refurbished nicely and the bathroom looks great all is spoiled by the smell of sewerage coming from the bathroom. Rooms look like they need to be finished properly a bit cowboy -like. The outside of the hotel is needing painting especially where the new doors have been installed. Breakfast was good with plenty of choices but staff seem mechanical not particularly friendly. We ate in the restaurant which was busy but food average nothing to rave about. Free Wifi on ground floor. We would not stay here again.

Stayed for six nights in a suite with balcony. We had a supremely comfortable six-foot wide bed, luxury bathroom with a shower and bath tub, sofa and two armchairs, flat screen TV, coffee table, dining table and much more. Breakfast is the best I have had with large buffet and full English Breakfast cooked to your specific requirements. Staff were extremely helpful and professional. We ate in Silks Bistro a few times and the food is delicious & innovative. Be sure to try a Bellini in the champagne bar! Only drawback was the noise from two wedding parties on Friday and Saturday. Be prepared for some hilly walking to beach or town.

We stayed at the atlantic mid week for 1 night, we could only get what was called a classic twin with sea view.
Check in was good and the receptionist informative. We got the lift to the 2nd floor and as we walked along the corridor sensor lighting came on ,the room was very compact for a twin and the sea view was only seen from the side window or bathroom, there was a very nice plasma tv on the wall and the room was very well furnished with chandeliers and nice fittings you could tell they had spent a lot on the refurbishment.
The bathroom was large but shower head too big for its stand and for women no shower cap.
The tea and coffee only 2 sachets per room and if you wanted more was 50p each !!! We had a drink in the bar which was expensive and very limited seating with no atphmospere,
We had a so so night sleep for a single bed it was very small and feather and down quilt plus a plastic mattress protector so not very comfy.
Breakfast was good and all fresh products, but checkout slow.
dont get me wrong its a very good 4 star hotel but just the little things that spoil it.

I was very impressed with the quality of the fittings throughout the hotel and my room was extremely comfortable and the bathroom had both a shower and separate free-standing roll-top bath. The staff were very helpful, particularly when I said I was entertaining a client for dinner and would like to have our starters in the Sushi Bar and the remainder of the meal in Silks Bistro (personally, I thought this made great sense!). Both restaurants were excellent, and I particularly noticed the lacquer screens in the Sushi Bar. The full English breakfast was excellent. There is a lovely sheltered area with a gazebo at the front of the hotel where you can sit quietly and take in the spectacular views out to sea.
