“Three night break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2014

Just returned from three nights at the Hotel Victoria. Paid £160 including breakfast - very reasonable.
On arrival we were quite impressed with the main reception area - and the receptionist was very pleasant and helpful. We were charged an extra £15 to park at the hotel (£5 per day) but were expecting this as read that there would be car park charges.
Our room was on the first floor facing the town (room 111). It was a large-ish room with very high ceilings. The double bed consisted of two singles pushed together. The room had tea/coffee making facilities, a hair dryer and a dated CRT tv with digital tv. There was plenty of storage available. We had to request an iron/ironing board but were able to keep it for the duration of our stay. The en suite included a bathtub and a shower. The room decor was a little tired but it was clean. The only issue we had with the room was the leak in the ceiling which sprung in to action when the person in the room directly above used the shower. We did inform reception of this but they were already aware of the issue and according to the staff member who visited the room to inspect the leak "they had known about it for a few weeks"....
Breakfast was served until 9:30am. It consisted of a cold buffet (cereals, ham, cheese, fruit and yogurts) and a waiter/waitress would take your order for a cooked breakfast (toast, bacon, sausage, egg, beans, mushroom, tomato, hash browns...) staff here were very attentive, the service was good and the breakfast tasty - a great start to the day. We did find the cutlery to be dirty on two occasions however and so had to swap for clean.
The location of the hotel was excellent. Right in the thick of the action and right on the beach. There is a tesco express immediately opposite and another supermarket just down the road for anything you might need. There are lots of bars and restaurants nearby including a wetherspoons (again directly opposite). Newquay town centre is a two minute stroll from the hotel and the train station is a five minute stroll. There are lots of take always (Chinese, Indian, Kebab and Pizza) nearby if you want them as well as more upmarket dine in restaurants - something for every budget .

Firstly, the staff: really friendly and helpful.

Secondly the ambience: Built in 1897 and retains all the wonderful features - the woodwork is just fantastic. The dining room, overlooking the Atlantic rollers, is just wonderful, likewise he spacious lounge overlooking the ocean.

Then - the food. I have no idea how the reviewer could find the food other than brilliant. Breakfasts were excellent, whether continental or cooked: couldn't fault it. Dinner was just excellent: we ate there two nights and the food was elegantly presented, really tasty and way above most restaurant offerings (and we've eaten world-wide).

Finally the bedrooms: a little dated as one might expect of a hotel nearly 120 years old, but really comfortable beds and plenty of room. Check the bath taps - we were fooled! One does the temperature - one the supply of water.

All in all, we think it's a gem and we do plan to return.

Thank you to all who made our short stay so enjoyable.

Room Tip: If money is no object, go for one of the sea view suites and what a view!

Have just returned today from a lovely weekend away to this hotel. Cannot fault it for the price. It is in the centre of newquay, literally out the door and there you are even though I didnt find it noisy at night at all, very quiet ( although pelase bare in mind, this is february, dont know what the noise levels would be in the summer). We arrived earlier than check in, but the staff were lovely and took our registration number so that we could park in the car park and have a wander until our room was ready. Check in is normally 3pm onwards but the receptionist called at about 2pm on our mobiles to say room was ready when we were which we thought was a nice touch. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. The room was lovely, very clean and everything there that was needed. Breakfast was particularly nice. We were going for a day hiking on the saturday so made sure we made the most of the breakfast and we both had enough to last us all day. Really lovely selection, cereals, cold meats, croissants, juices and full english. The views from the breakfast table were outstanding over the sea. The room was serviced and topped up with whatever we needed. I have absolutely no reservations about staying here again.

Room Tip: Book early to avoid disappointment as have just tried to book for the summer as we enjoyed it so muc...

We arrived on valentines day having driven through some horrendous weather! Check in was quick and easy, and we were soon unpacking in our room. Our immediate impression was that this is a great old hotel, clean and tidy with everything you need, with staff that are all friendly and efficient. Once settled in we had a good look round, just to familiarise ourselves with our surroundings. There was a lovely open fire in the front lounge area leading through to the dinning area with some great sea views (if you got the right seats!). There is also a great little swimming pool and sauna that is free to use for residents. Although we went out for evening meals, breakfast was included in our stay. Once again, staff were friendly, attentive and very efficient. Food was first class, with a selection of fruit juices, cereals and continental breakfast foods. Of course if you preferred, a full English was readily available, always fresh and constantly being topped up.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Victoria, and would definitely stay again!

Enjoyable stay with family right in the heart of Newquay near to the beaches and amenities. Rooms comfortable with great sea views and breakfast was okay although not memorable. Would definitely book again though and would recommend for families or groups looking for a weekend break.

Me and my mum have just had a one night stay here. My mum booked it for my Christmas present so we could spend some time together as I have recently had a baby. We both live in Newquay so it was just going to be some time to relax. We would have cream teas in the afternoon of arrival then we had a £50 to spend for our evening meal and then breakfast. We upgraded to a twin room with see views, the room was quite small and dated but we did have superb sea views. After we arrived we went for our 'cornish' cream teas we where very disappointed with these as they had been heated up in the microwave and had therefore gone soggy! I mean what trained chief in there right mind puts bread in a microwave! We where VERY disappointed.
Our evening meal was also very disappointing I ordered the warm cornish yarg with warm bread AGAIN this had been put in the microwave it was horrible the cheese had cuddled and the bread was floppy my mums starter left a lot to the imagination she ordered Presario wrapped it this coleslaw that had cream cheese in it. We both couldn't eat these! I then ordered the steak which was cooked to my liking and came with chips a mushroom a tomato then what was supposed to be served with seasonal veg that had been cooked in the microwave AGAIN my steak was ok but definitely not worth £17.50! My mum had the duck leg with lentils this tasted like bisto gravy again my mum could not eat this! And was definitely not worth £13.50! We then had a cheese bored to share it was tiny and the cheese was over ripe we also had no butter! The waitress was very good and dealt with our complaints in a professional manner and took them to the manager. In the morning we went for breakfast this was a buffet and also a buffet cooked breakfast. When we went to get our cooked breakfast the bacon was freezing cold and the mushrooms where tinned we waited for some more sausage when they came out they were still pink and very very raw I took one back to the table to check if it was cooked and it was definitely raw so once again we left our meal they charge £12.95 ppl for breakfast! There was no butter or sugar on our table and our coffee was cold they also didn't bring us any milk.
After our evening meal we went to our room where my mum was sick 3 times during the night and in the morning we both had very bad bellies. When we checked out we complained about the food and we was refunded £21 my mum paid £89 for this stay and as it was the dining we was looking forward to the most and we was both mad ill I feel we should have been refunded the full amount and we will be writing a formal complaint. The reception staff where very professional in dealing with our complaints but the manager was not there to talk with us. There was also other people at the desk complaining about the food. We was also looking forward to using the leisure facilities but as be both felt ill we couldn't.

Room Tip: Just don't waste money on food there go out to eat its cheaper and probably wont get ill!
