“Beautiful, stunning, amazing and relaxing stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

The Headland is a grand Victorian hotel with the best position for the beach and ocean. We arrived and were shown around the hotel which was a lovely touch and made us feel welcome straight away. It was lovely to see that the hotel retains the Victorian grandness but with modern facilities. There are several things that make this hotel special, the staff, view and spa. The hotel is on the edge of Fistral beach and has a fantastic view over the headland with amazing crashing waves below. The room was lovely although the bathroom was small but the view over the ocean was gorgeous. After a great walk around the area we headed for the spa, which is fantastic and beautifully presented. With the spa you don't need to have a fancy bathroom - this makes up for it. A sauna, Cornish steamroom, spa pool, swimming pool and various showers gives you plenty to do. We had pre-dinner drinks in front of one of the lovely open fires and then proceeded to have a fabulous dinner on the terrace. A good sleep in a big comfy bed followed and the view of the stormy ocean the next day was mesmerising. Looking forward going back.

Thank you for a truly wonderful view, and I am delighted to read your appreciation of the hotel's grandness but also how it manages so well to meet the more contemporary in certain areas, such as the new Wellness Area. We are continuously introducing even higher specification bathrooms and have completed many to date. Please do mention your preference for one of our new under floor heated bathrooms and super rainfall showers when making in a reservation in the future, we will always do our best to accommodate your preference.

We escaped City life and headed on a long journey to Newquay. Having not visited this part of the Country since childhood I suppose we were somewhat nervous of what may greet us (and having recently spent a sunny weekend in Tenerife we were sure it would not compare). What a stunning hotel the Headland is - although in the middle of an exension for a new spa area the new pool/sauna area is now open and brings the hotel into a different class. We loved the old feel to the place and the grand setting and internal decor - yet despite the worst wet/windy weekend of the year so far the place remained water tight, warm and welcoming. Breakfast was beautiful - fresh, hot and plentiful (there is also a menu to chose from which again has great selection), the afternoon teas also appeared popular. The views and location of the hotel are amazing and despite never having stepped on a surf board I was desperate to give it a go ! The staff work around the clock and were always polite and helpful. Our only grumble was there was a wedding going on Saturday so some areas where closed off (as was the use of the umbrellas that were reserved for wedding guests only! - fortunately one of whom was gentleman enough to see us to our cab in the monsoon!). The pool area was quite small but well formed for a relax and heat up after a long walk (H&S warning there should be a warning on spout from pool which gets really hot - blister on finger ouch!)

Room Tip: Try to get a costal view - amazing waking up in the morning to the sight of waves and surfers

I really enjoyed reading your Trip Advisor review, thank you very much! It is great to know that you enjoyed your visit and whilst it can feel like a long drive, the vast majority of our guests agree that it is worth it once you arrive here. The Atlantic and the winds have been extremely wild to say the least over the past week or so, but we think (and happy to promote) that we think that's the charm of staying at this time of year and it sounds as though you would agree?

Apologies with regards to the shortage of umbrellas, these actually belonged to the wedding at that time but we will certainly look to improve the stocks for Hotel use. Rest assured that your experience of the hot 'spout' in the Wellness area has already been acted upon, but please accept my apologies all the same.

We stayed here for a weekend in Feb 2012. For valentines day. The price wasn't too bad actually, can't remember exact price but it was around £450- £500 for the weekend.
For this we stayed in a fabulous cottage on the estate.
The cottage would sleep 6, but we spolit ourselves being just the two of it.
It was absolutely lovely.
Very well furnished.
Very warm, needed in feb!
With stunning sea views.
You could also use the hotel which was very grand looking.
Everything is about the Headlands is stunning, it is just a pity that it is in Newquay.
It is far far too nice

Thank you for your review and I am very pleased indeed to read that you had successful stay with us earlier in the year. We are closing the hotel for a couple of weeks in January to allow some time to complete a further phase of the spa development. We will however be welcoming guests once again from 1st February and it would be fantastic to welcome you back once again then!

We first visited the Headland at Easter 1984, with our two very young children. At that time the hotel was in dire need of redecoration and refurbishment, but the food, service, ambience, location and good value prices made up for this. We continued to visit the hotel twice a year until 1990, when prices started to soar and we felt that standards had slipped and no longer represented good value.

In 2002 we returned to the hotel as a couple. Rooms and bathrooms had been refurbished and it was the same stunning location, of course, but we found the food disappointing and the service in the dining room was poor. We did not make any plans to return.

Prompted by our daughter visiting the hotel with her partner earlier this year, and the good reviews on Tripadvisor, we decided to give the Headland another try. We booked a 3-day break in November and took advantage of the 'Scrumptious' offer, which included breakfast and dinner in the restaurant every evening. Without the offer prices seem to be eye-wateringly expensive.

On this visit we were not disappointed. We had a comfortable room overlooking Fistral Beach with a very large bed, tea/coffee facilities, fridge (very welcome and fresh milk available on request), t.v., bathrobes, etc. The large en suite bathroom had underfloor heating, two basins and a separate shower (though maintenance needs attention).

We were very impressed with the food both at dinner and breakfast - recommend the Eggs Benedict - and the service in the dining room was very good without being obtrusive (though the hotel was very quiet when we there so staff were by no means stretched). One of the disappointments of our stay was that because guest numbers were low 2 breakfasts and one evening dinner were taken in the Terrace restaurant, which whilst very pleasant does not have the same ambience of the beautiful, refurbished dining room.

As it was November the weather was wet and windy on one of the days so it was lovely to make use of the comfy sofas in the refurbished, warm downstairs lounges and read a book. We suspect that this may not so easy to do during school holiday periods when the hotel is full of children.

Although we didn't make use of the new pool area it looks very impressive.

Our only gripe is the hotel's policy to take a credit card authorisation on arrival of £50 per day towards 'extras''. Presumably the hotel has had a problem with a small number of guests disappearing without paying. Please don't tar us all with the same brush! Warning: watch the extras - they can soon mount up - £3.30 for a bottle of table water, £3.10 for a small cappuccino, £11.00 for a crab sandwich.

We enjoyed our visit to the Headland. Yes, it is expensive, but it is clear that a great deal of money has been spent which has enabled the hotel to continue much the same as it did almost 30 years since our first visit. The Headland is back on our list of favourite hotels and we hope to make a return visit.

Room Tip: Look out for special offers

Thank you for your recent review and for returning to The Headland after a break of some years. I am delighted to read that on this occasion you enjoyed a very positive experience and from our point of view, it is always very rewarding when this is the outcome.
The Hotel has received some immense investment over the past couple of years, and as you will have noticed during your stay, we think the best is still to come with a brand new spa and gym.
It is our belief that The Headland represents very good value for money, and whilst there are numerous hotels to choose from in our part of the country, and whilst never complacent, we are confident that we demonstrate an outstanding commitment to our guest’s and attention to detail, and which sets us apart from many other hotels.
We are aware of many notable hotels that also operate a similar check in process to ourselves and which includes the recognised and standard banking process known of pre-authorisation. This process is applicable to all Hotel and Cottage guests who stay with us, and we always ensure that the total sum inputted is clearly explained at the time. There is of course the option not to charge goods and services to an extra's account, and where this is the case, guests are able to 'pay as they go' throughout the hotel.
Thank you for taking the time to give us such a lovely review, and we hope to welcome you once again in the not too distant future.

Stayed for a short break in october, 2 adults, 2 teenagers and an 8yr old, and not forgetting our 2 dogs. All of us had a fantastic stay here. The location is fab, mins from Fistral Bay and just over a five minute walk to the old part of Newquay. The staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The atmosphere was very relaxed and we all particularly enjoyed the pool and spa facilities. The hotel is due for a major makeover which will bring the decor and hotel up to modern standards. We stayed in a coastal view room which had a great view of the sea as well. Very spacious, lovely sized ensuite. Blankets for the dogs. At no time did i feel my dogs were in the way ss the hotel and staff really are dog friendly, even when covered in sand! We were able to walk from our rooms in wetsuits if we wished to surf and a surf hire facility is also offered at the hotel, and they were also extremely friendly. Would i go back? Absolutely as there are very few places that i can truly relax with dogs and kids/ teenagers.

Room Tip: For the amount of time we spent in our room, a courtyard room would have been fine. Loads of differe...

Thank you for choosing to stay with us during the October holidays and for rating us so highly throughout.

We are very much a family destination and in particular during the school holidays, and recognise that for many that includes the family dog!

I do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to The Headland during 2013,you may like to consider one of our Fistral rooms or suites where the decor is very much more contemporary in style?

We enjoyed a 3 night break at the beginning of the month with our 3 year old grandson. On this occasion we stayed in a 'splendid suite' which was up on the top floor. Great room with everything you could need and more. It was very windy at night but this added to the atmosphere of being so close to the ocean. We made full use of the hotel and all the facilities on offer. Every evening we enjoyed a lovely meal in the Terrace as we find this room a bit less formal with a toddler. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. After a day on the beach and in the rock pools it was great to return to the warmth of the hotel and go in the pool. Tony very kindly found us board games to keep us entertained.
We were last at the Headland in August when we stayed in a cottage with the whole family. As usual it was a brilliant week with plenty to do for our 3 generation party. I recommend Huers 5 as we have stayed in this cottage for the last few years - 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and plenty of space. Although Boardmasters was in full swing and Newquay was packed this did not alter the great service we always get from everyone. Nothing is too much trouble. Some of the staff have worked here for quite some time and its great to see them being given much deserved more senior roles.
All in all I can not fault the Headland and our family will have many happy memories of holidays spent here.
