“lamb shank”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

Myself and my father had the lamb shank in the red wine it was very very good and the vegetables were very good too. My husband however had the ribs and he said they were overcooked. But then again can't be perfect all the time. Was well pleased with lamb shanks though. The desserts very very good too we had sticky toffee pudding. Would visit again

Considering we visited twice in early October which is a quieter part of the season you would not know it. The Sunday lunch 2 hours into service was still very well stocked with four choices of meat. To go with the generous helping of meat were several choices of vegetables and two of potatoes. Plus 2 types of gravy and lots of accompanyments. Visited again on the Weds eve which is pie night as well as carvery. There were two large homemade trays of Steak and ale pie and also chicken and mushroom. Both looked appetising I opted for the first which was excellent. The hotel has several eating areas and is very inviting with a lot of flowers as you enter. The staff were first class, from our hostess Tina to the server Jake, and even the chef had time to say hello. We had struggled to find good down to earth traditional food in the Newquay area, we have now found it here and we look forward to coming back to the Griffin on future visits.

The food here is lovely, we both had starters and mains, service was good and fast and staff were helpful. Lovely big portions, steak cooked just as asked which you don't usually get in a pub! Good value for money!

We went to The Griffin just for a Sunday carvery but as I am a fussy eater, we called beforehand to make a request about the meat which we were told would be fine and just to mention it upon arrival to get it arranged. So upon arrival, we mentioned it to the waitress who was extremely rude, advised its not possible at all and was very patronising. Upon explaining that we had called before and had it confirmed, she still said no and so we walked away and said 'there is no need to be rude' as her attitude was awful. She immediately ran after us and instead of apologising for coming across that way, became defensive and snappy and said she was not being rude. She then got another waiter to serve us for the night whilst she did every other room in the table but us so clearly couldn't face the fact that she had a complaint and could not be professional, apologise and move on. Also, the table number was a folded piece of card that was previously used as a room card as it had someone's date of stay, room number, signature and even their telephone number on the back!!! The food was good though but I would avoid the miserable waitress!

recently stayed at the griffin, was pleasantly surprised the rooms are spacious and very clean, the breakfast was great only downside was you did get a little noise from late night revellers going home but overall a fantastic break and would go back, thank you griffin .

Room Tip: we had a room at the back of hotel might be better to get front facing room

Ate here as a family of three on Monday 12th August. Food was fab, fajitas were lovely and well presented, chicken supreme was great and rack of ribs was really good too. Plenty of choice because of a specials menu (included mackerel and pollock) as well as the normal menu. Friendly service at the bar too, made for a pleasant experience overall. Would return again and recommend, especially good if you have children with you as it's hard to find somewhere accommodating.
