“Fair value for money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

Site looks tired and in early June 2013 not all facilities were open - the leaflet described the half-term programme which was not on during our stay. Overall need for investment and sprucing up. Potholes in road outside reception.

Accommodation was clean and a good size, and good layout for 6 adults plus toddler. Beds were very hard and really need replacing.

Pool was good, and golf course better than expected. Staff were helpful.

Overall the holiday was good value for money.

Stayed in 2 large houses as a big group so it had cost us a huge amount to stay for the weekend. The apartments and houses look rough but the inside was ok. Very basic and dated but clean and simple. We had a BBQ with our house and the plan was to use it but it was horrendous, full Of cigarette ends and ash and dirt was absolutely disgusting.
We were hoping to use the swimming pool on the Saturday as well but as the receptionist explained to us it's not open. I mean why would you open the pool on a boiling hot Saturday in June when the place is packed. The manager did visit us and kindly offer for us to sunbathe on the grass area next to the bar and they would open the bar for us so we could spend yet more of our money there! I really would advise not staying here for the cost its really not worth the money at all.

Sorry that we did not meet your personal expectation, as explained to previous guests the company has recently undergone a major aquisition and is now under new ownership and improvements to the site are currently underway, including a full painting schedule. We do not provide BBQ's with our lodges so that would have been left behind by a previous guest or would suggest that you were in a privately let property where the owner is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep.

The outdoor pool that you mention is not scheduled to be open until July due to operational issues, although we are changing our operational procedures later into this and next year so that this pool can be used whenever by either guests, members or holiday makers staying on site.

As you can see we are working hard to improve our facilities and services and do hope that you will stay with us again in the future.

First impressions of the site are a little disappointing. After driving all day you arrive at the pot hole ridden car park where it is not immediately clear where you are supposed to go to check in. At check in I had to re-enter all of the information I had already entered in the online check in so I don't know what the point of that is. I was then informed that they don't accept American Express for the security deposit (not seen any mention of this up until then) and they couldn't get my debit card to work either.

I think we were unlucky with our house allocation as some of the others in the same row had much nicer furniture and equipment as you could see through the patio doors. On entry there was a strong musty / dog smell, and a saggy sofa and chair with blankets chucked on top of them. There were marks and scuffs on all of the walls downstairs with the area around the bin being particularity dirty with what looked like tea stains running down the wall and large scuffed areas on both walls behind.

The welcome folder on the table contained multiple copies of the same "Resort Comment Sheet" and entertainment schedules, many were screwed up and some had tea rings, this could easily be organised a bit, you don't need 10 copies of the comment sheet surely? This could be improved with some practical information such as how to turn on the hot water (switch at the top of the stairs!) It also contained the final invoice of the person who stayed in the house immediately before us, with personal contact and payment information so I wouldn't advise leaving anything like this behind!

T.V. was tiny, again luck of the draw as the one next door looked reasonable. One of the lights in the living room ceiling wasn't working and the lamp had a broken / burnt shade and didn't work at all (apparently last PAT tested in 2005 according to the sticker).
.
The kitchen and upstairs were of a higher quality, the only thing I couldn't find in the kitchen was a bottle opener which was a little annoying and there was some paint on the roller blind at the top. Otherwise it was well equipped with everything you need with a decent sized fridge / freezer, pots and pans etc. + pack of dog biscuits in the cupboard.

We paid £15 each for a highchair (plastic fold up one) and cot which turned out to be the same travel cot I already have, which I had to put together before the kids could go to sleep (luckily I know how to do this as I have one). For that price I was expecting a real cot already in place as I could have bought a brand new travel cot from the nearby Sainsbury's for £20.

There were other maintenance issues with broken furniture / equipment (fridge shelf / towel holder / chest of draws) but upstairs was much nicer and cleaner than the downstairs.

The bedrooms were nicely furnished and comfortable. I'd recommend taking a stair gate for small children.

For the bath (shower) room the website states "With two bedrooms and one bathroom . . . Family shower room" which gives the impression of a bath or at least some facilities for a family but there it is just a shower room, nicely furnished but not very large, with no bath and no facilities for cleaning small children / babies so not suitable for a young family. We had to buy a washing up bowl to use as a makeshift bath for the week.

We did not use any of the onsite facilities so can't comment, but the parking is a free for all and we only managed to get a space near our house on a couple of occasions. There is potential for allocated spaced for each house. The location is good, a 15 minute drive to Newquay, 30mins to the Eden Project and 45 minutes to get to Land's End with an hour or so to get anywhere off the main roads.

Room Tip: Bring your own travel cot and high chair

Thank you for your feedback.
We are very sorry that we did not meet your expectations. A few things you mentioned are already in the process of rectified. Our road and car park are currently being resurfaced and the lodges have a full painting schedule in place to give everywhere a fresh look.
We recognized that our check in procedure wasn't always effective and have now simplified it and it is now working extremely efficiently.
You also mentioned that the furniture varies from each property - this can be that some of the properties are privately owned and we are working closely with the owners to bring all the lodges to the same standard.
A welcome pack that will have all the information for our guests is being put together ready for the summer and will be refreshed when necessary.
Our cots and highchairs are a chargeable extra however you are more than welcome to bring your own.
We are sure that you would have a different experience if you came back again and we offer a returning guest discount and if you would like to book please contact lindsey@atlanticreach.co.uk or call 01726 860775 and ask for Lindsey. We will hopefully see you again soon.

We stayed at Atlantic Reach in August 2011 for a week in a two bedroom house. The house itself was nicely done, slightly tired, which is the overall impression of Atlantic Reach. We made use of the indoor and outdoor pool even though the weather wasn't great. We also went to a few local beaches. We found the staff friendly and amenable. It was not noisy at night; we were fairly close to the main reception and pool area. We had booked it through Hoseasons.
I would go there again and the only thing I would say is that in parts it needs updating. I would not pay full price if I went again and would look for a Hoseasons deal; of which there seem to be quite few.

Had a great week with family. 5 adults and 2 kids. Immaculate 4 bed house. (No 53). 3 bathrooms, all home comforts with plenty of space. Site facilities good, indoor & outdoor pools, play area, teen den etc. Wasn't able to use spa as fully booked :( One tip don't use on site laundry as expensive. Perfect base for visiting beautiful beaches & attractions. We were all sad to come home & would definitely return!

My expectations were quite high before our holiday to Atlantic Reach (booked for May Half Term). Unfortunately they didn't quite match up to the reality. The main car park is in dire need of resurfacing. Major pot hole issue. The overall appearance of the site is tired and there are maintenance issues. Many of the contempory style houses need a new lick of paint as they look scruffy. There is a severe lack of parking; just not enough spaces for the amount of potential vehicles visiting the site. The 4 bedroom contempory house we had booked was clean and spacious and the kitchen/dining area and lounge had a modern, comfortable feel. The kitchen was very well equipped (downside: no washing machine and on site launderette is pricey). Unfortunately the cottage smelt very musty for several days which wasn't helped by the drain in the downstairs wc/shower room which smelt too. Initially we did have a problem with the heating/hot water but this was very swifty rectified by the maintenance team. No secluded outdoor space to sit (both of the picnic tables to the front of our cottage were broken and unusable). All of the beds in the house were comfy but very, very creaky.

The restaurant and bar are located in the original Old Manor building and the reception, lounge, swimming pool, soft play and gym are found in the purpose built building situated next the the Old Manor. We visited the restaurant on the first night in the hope of getting a meal and drink after a horrendous journey. Admittedly it was 2 minutes to 9pm when we arrived but we were told rather abruptly that we were too late to get anything to eat as the kitchen was closed. Surely on the day when everyone is arriving at the site you would have the kitchen open until 10pm for road weary residents who just want to walk to the restaurant, have a meal, a drink and relax. So we drove into Quintrell Downs and fortunately found a great TableTable restaurant called Treffry Tavern where the welcome was very warm and friendly and extremely good value for money. Needless to say we didn't go back to the restaurant on site but did frequent Treffery Tavern again...twice. Pirate Pete's soft play states it is suitable for children aged 5-12. My 9 year old went in and was bored after 10 minutes as, and I quote "it's more for little children". The indoor pool was good (no secure lockers though). Outdoor pool wasn't open and the water looked very green! Think they need to invest in a pool cover! Children's play park was good with a variety of equipment.

Overall, we had a great holiday as we used the house as a base and explored the surrounding areas in the Cornish sunshine. It feels like holidaying on a housing estate with a few facilities thrown in.

We are very sorry that when you went down to the restaurant that you were unable to order any food. The Manor Bar kitchen is currently under refurbishment to better equip our staff to be able to cope with higher numbers of guests.
