“Excellent Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

We recently stayed at the Polraen Country House Hotel. Martin and Gill are excellent hosts and nothing is too much trouble. Location is great. We parked the car in the large hotel car park and it didn't move for a few days as we opted to use the public transport so that we could discover Looe and Polpero at our leisure without worrying about the parking fees. The bus stop is right outside the hotel and the train station 2 minute walk up the road. The breakfast and evening meals were wonderful. Martin is an excellent cook. I would definitely recommend you eat there at least once during your stay. I cannot fault the hotel at all. We will definitely stay there again. Must just say that the beds are the most comfortable ones we have slept in!

After 5 nights at Porlaen we were sad to leave, great place to stay. Location great for exporing Cornwall and Gill and Martin were the perfect hosts providing friendly and welcoming service.
Gills knowledge of the local area enabled us to enjoy Cornwall to the full. Would recommend holidaying here to all.

We stayed at the Porlaen for 3 nights, Gill & Martin were perfect hosts, the accommodation was excellent in every way. The breakfast and evening meal were superb. The location of the Porlaen was ideal for reaching other resorts and places of interest. In short we would certainly stay there again if we were in the area and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

Gill and Martin are very welcoming and happy, jolly people. We had a very relaxing 4 night stay. Everywhere was absolutley spotless and although the weather stpped us enjoying the garden it was lovely eating in the conservatory with the views over it.
One of the most helpful aspects was Gill and Martin's advice on where to explore and additional places to visit, or routes to use, nearby places we had planned to visit. For example, we went to the Eden Project but the enjoyment of the day was extended by using the route home advised by Gill.
No critism at all - everything positive.

Our first short break with our baby. We stayed 2 nights on b&b basis. Gill & Martin could not have done more to accommodate us. The room was spacious, clean and the hotel is a lovely period property tastefully decorated, with a conservatory where we breakfasted. We spent evenings downstairs in the lounge with a glass of wine after putting baby to bed - an enjoyable break.

Gill and Martin provide excellent quality accommodation, great food and a home-from-home welcome at the Porlaen Country House Hotel. Rooms are well appointed and provide everything you need for a comfortable stay. We stayed in the King room, complete with en-suite shower, Freesat HD TV and king size bed. The standards of cleanliness were top class, including all towels and linen. Overall, the room was of a very good size and very enjoyable.

Breakfast included a large range of options, including Full English, Eggs Benedict and Croissants for the main serving. Those choices are supplemented by a range of cereals, yoghurts, fruits, juices and toast. All meat and eggs were locally sourced and tasted fantastic! We enjoyed the Full English and Croissants twice and the meals were of a consistently high quality. Overall, breakfast at the Porlaen provides a great start to the day.

Other facilities include a fully licensed bar, guests' lounge and dinner menu available at an additional rate. The bar and lounge were well appointed and available for guests to use at all times, and while we did not eat with the hotel in the evening, I have no doubt that the quality of the food would match that of the breakfast meals.

The hotel is located just 2 miles outside of Looe, in Sandplace. It is a stone's throw away from Sandplace Station on the Looe Valley line, and therefore provides an excellent base to explore the Looe Valley whether on foot, by rail or by car. Buses also stop just outside the hotel at regular intervals. Parking outside the hotel is ample, ensuring that you can leave the car and explore by other means should you wish. Aside from
Looe, attractions such as the Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Charlestown Talllships, and Bodmin Jail are all less than half an hour away. The fishing villages of Polperro (10 mins) and Mevagissey (45 mins) can also be reached with ease and provide a picturesque stop during your stay in Cornwall.

I'd fully recommend making the Porlaen Hotel your number one choice. Gill and Martin are sure to offer the best welcome, accommodation, food and hospitality to be found in the area, and are always on hand to ensure that your stay is the best it can be. For a truly memorable stay on the Cornish coast, make it the Porlaen.

We stayed at this lovely hotel for two nights in May. We were warmly welcomed by Gill on arrival and Martin cooked a wonderful meal for us on the first night. The breakfast was extremely good, catering for all tastes. The garden was great too! The position of this hotel is just right for peace and quiet yet close enough to Looe for access to shops and restaurants. We would definitely stay here again.
