“Consistently Welcoming & Comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

We have stayed at the Hawthorne Dene many times over the years, with and without offspring, and have always been satisfied and well catered for. The couple who own and run the hotel offer a warm welcome and a positive response to any needs, and have put their own stamp on this property that has a unique appeal for us. All rooms are clean and the beds are especially comfortable, with those at the front of the house offering wonderful sea views across the bay. The Hawthorne Dene is well situated for the short walk to both Falmouth town centre, and beaches.

Room Tip: For sea views ask for a front of house bedroom (downside is passing road traffic).

Just had an overnight stay, very good value. My room had a lovely view across the Fal estuary - very warm in fact had to turn the heating off. Good ensuite facilities plenty of hot water - macerator a bit noisy. Some traffic noise at front of house but very quiet at night.
A substantial full English breakfast set me up for the day.

The Hawthorne is situated on a hill overlooking the bay. This gives you breath taking skies in the morning and a nice view during breakfast. The rooms are named and the reason will be clear :-) Take one person room Humphrey! The walls are paved with historical pictures going back a long time. Take some time to absorb them. The interior is dated but well maintained and the lovely land lady favours classical music, which when you are a fan like me will make you feel going back in time.
The room I stayed in was for one person with a nice bed. The shower and toilet worked fine. Unfortunate there is no dinner in the evening but the centre and port are at walking distance (down hill) if you are a difficult walker look for a better located place.

We stayed just one night because we were attending a function at a hotel round the corner which was full. The accomodation has an 'old fashioned' feel to it but all the facilities are good. Our 'luxury' room was large as was our firned's, who also stayed. Both their bed and our bed were uncommonly comfortable! Lovely views. Each room 'belongs' to a teddy bear which is a delightful touch! Plumbing a bit dodgy but we have experienced very musch worse. Breakfast freshly cooked and unhurried. I would stay here rather than in the hotel round the corner where we were the previous year!

A one night dash - arrived at 13.30 needing to shower and change for a wedding, they accommodated this early check-in.

Room was fine for one person staying one night, but I wouldn't want to spend a week in it with my wife. The bathroom was very small and I only just fitted into the shower!

Breakfast was satisfactory, but nothing outstanding and again he breakfast room was quite tight for space.

Surprised to read in the room that I was expected to vacate the room by 11.30 even if I was staying that evening. This is reminiscent of the guest houses I stayed in as a child in the 60's/70's but it calls itself a hotel - needs to decide which it is!

All in all a pleasant enough place, not one for long stays, but two or three nights would be fine as long as you don't mind being turned out onto the streets during the day.

We had a room at the top of the house with spectacular views across to the sea and Pendennis Castle. Although the bed was a little too hard for my liking. The sloping ceiling on one side of the room was too low for my husband to sleep on his usual side of the bed and even at 5' 2'' I had to watch it . The shower was also a bit on the small side. However the chaise longue was a nice suprise to sit and enjoy the views.
The full english breakfast was quite small compared to the other places we have stayed, but was very tasty, one thing I will say please advise the hostess how you would like your bacon cooked.
There was also great alternative dishes to choose from.
Parking on site was a nice change and was free. All in all I would recommend Hawthorne Dene, but make sure you can manage the stairs to the top rooms, as they are on the second floor, the stairs steep and the rooms have a dormer ceiling. However they have a superb view.

Room Tip: I can only comment on the top floor rooms, at the front of the house, great view, steep stairs and d...

Our trip was to safely deposit our daughter at Tremough Campus, we chose this B & B as it was just far away enough to allow us all some distance but equally be close enough to deliver all of the last minute things she had forgotten! Our room was very comfortable & the bed particularly so. The breakfast was delicious & well cooked. Our hostess was very helpful with suggestions of local shops for our daughter's last minute requirements!!!!! All in all a very pleasant stay.
