“Outstanding!!! Didn't want to leave!.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2008

This is a Wonderful Hotel and to us in many ways exceeds it's 4 star rating, All staff are extremely friendly and provide excellent service.
The hotel has many great facillities, our favourites were the swimming pool, Table Tennis, Snooker, Cocktail Bar, The Restaurant, Sunlounge, Decking and great views looking out to sea.
The room we had was a Superior and was very cosy, clean and spacious and had plenty of storage (wardrobe, chest of draws), Great TV (plasma), plenty of toiliteries and we had a partial view of the sea, but this didn't matter because downstairs made up for the view.
The restaurant was beautiful well furnished, great views looking out to sea, excellent waitors/waitresses and the food was first class. In all if you are travelling to Cornwall and want a great Hotel this is it, and is in a great location for travelling to all the hot spots i.e Eden Project, Marazion, St Ives, Lands End and Porthleven.
We can't wait to go again.

we are a young thirties couple with 3 kids and have come to the royal duchy for the last three years around or on valentines day. It is our once a year treat to enjoy each others company away from the the kids to just totally unwind for the weekend.Firstly i am astonished how nobody has really raved about the food. It is superb and better than most restaurants i have ever been to anywhere in the world. The service is again superb and the rooms we stay in always vary in location but never in standard or quality.
Consistency is hard to achieve in any business but this hotel does it with ease. I look forward to our return!!

Stayed in the Armada Suite for a couple of nights. Good views of the sea, spacious bedroom & lounge.

2 full bathrooms – one with a low level shower, the other with a “normal” level shower.

IMHO the bathroom suites could do with being updated – they’re a bit 80’s, but clean & functional.

Staff are friendly & polite. They’re there when you need something but not obtrusive.

Can't really understand the negative reviews on here. We stayed in a basic inland facing room as we only live a few miles away and this was treat so we could have a nice evening out in Falmouth. The room was very nice indeed and furnished to a high standard with flat screen tv. The bed was extremely comfortable and everything was immaculately clean, it is four star standard. THe service was exceptional although we didn't eat in the evening as we know where to eat in Falmouth, the bar was reasonably priced, not a rip off like many hotel bars. Not quite sure what people expect from a hotel overlooking Falmouth bay as the views from the bar are lovely. The breakfast was very well cooked and very tasty. The swimming pool is small but it is still nice. Overall a very good experience and we will go back next time we stay in Falmouth. THe price at £90 for a double room was good too.

It surprises me how this hotel can be designated a “Four Star” establishment being little more than a large “Guest House” on a busy road. Sure the staff are dressed for the part, but there’s nothing here to justify what I would expect from a luxury hotel. It’s just pretentious.

Location? Well, I wouldn’t consider being situated on a busy road between two blocks of apartments to be attractive. The beach isn’t very welcoming here and can only be accessed via occasional concrete steps. The graffiti is interesting though.

There is little frontage to the hotel and nothing at all to the rear, so perhaps all the facilities are INSIDE? No, the indoor pool tagged onto the reception area is little more than the size of a jacuzzi. The lounges are quite small so any entertainment must happen in the dining room. This didn’t seem to be a problem during my stay as most of the elderly clientele were away to their rooms by about 9.00 p.m.

Food? Messy, tortured, fingered cuts of meat appeared for most main courses, with side dishes containing the vegetables. Where is the silver-service? The decent choices of a la carte alternatives?

My partner and I booked a Superior room. It was OK, nothing special. Small, but with a flat-screen TV and the usual toiletries provided. Can’t understand why there are so many tariffs and standards of room here, but grateful we had not taken the cheap “Inland Facing” option, which must be pretty grim.

I am retired and travel continuously. I expect, and usually get, certain standards when staying at establishments promoted as “Four Star”. This hotel fails miserably, but the staff may put on a display impressive enough to convince some folk that they are experiencing something superior. It all seems a bit of a con.

  • Disliked — Quite small fo a 'Four Star'

It saddens me to write a critical review about this hotel as my wife and I have had enjoyable visits here in the past, but four days spent here over Christmas this year was a complete waste of money.
I suppose that at a mere £568 per person we shouldn't have expected much as this was the basic 'Inland Facing' room rate. We live near the sea and rarely feel the need to upgrade to a ‘Sea Facing’ room to remind us it exists when the rates here are up to £684 pp and higher. However, on this occasion perhaps it would have been wiser to have spent a little more.

We were allocated room 125. A small room on the first floor at the end of a corridor. It’s a problem room. The view from the window didn't bother us – just a few bins etc..... It was the noise from the industrial fan on the exterior wall that was the problem. Now if you are slightly deaf or daft or intend to be drunk over your break this may not bother you, but it bothered US, and we had no sleep for a couple of nights. By Xmas day we were exhausted and prepared to cut the holiday short if the problem could not be solved. It couldn't.
To be fair - the duty manager appeared to be genuinely concerned about our situation. (Or gave a convincing Oscar winning acting performance) His solution included offering us a couple of night’s accommodation at another Brend hotel or an upgraded room for our last night in the Royal Duchy due to a vacancy by someone leaving early. We settled for the latter since it was the busy Xmas day.... A bottle of bubbly appeared at our dinner table too.

Was that IT then? No - unfortunately not. The whole package seemed mediocre. No complaint about the short Xmas Eve bus trip to Truro, but the Boxing Day tour to Mousehole was cheap and cheerless. Guests ambled like lost souls around a deserted village waiting for the 5 0'clock Xmas lights display to be switched on. There was just ONE cafe open in the area. Lucky ones amongst us managed to warm up with a cup of tea before working our way back to the coach through the dark, traffic congested narrow roads.

Then there was the FOOD. I don't recall it ever being this poor. From an enjoyable Roast beef & Yorkshire Pudding main course on the 23rd it deteriorated to a rubbery duck on Boxing Day. (We don't do 'under-cooked 'poultry)
At one stage I thought I might avoid these 'Haute Cuisine' creations by choosing a simple cold meat salad.... but sadly, even that emerged as an un-appetising,well-fingered mess. It seems the idea is to create pretty pictures and sculptures these days and to hell with what happens to the food. (I blame all these TV chefs….) Gourmet food it ain’t !

I have commented on this hotel in the past (‘Best in the area’ - May 07) and still consider it worth a visit.for most people….at the right tariff. The refurbishment now appears to be finished and the staff are as friendly as ever…..but WE are moving on.
