“Great pub, excellent food, really accommodating”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2011

We visited The Goshawk on a recent bank holiday, having decided to take a trip to Delamere Forest Park which is a few miles up the road.

It was great. We were a bit of an unwieldy party of 2 adults, a 12-month-old and a golden retriever and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. We sat outside on the tables overlooking the bowling green which was a great setting on a sunny day. Water and biscuits were produced for the dog and we were given hot water to warm the baby's food.

The food that we ordered was excellent. We weren't in the mood for anything particularly fancy, although they do have a very varied menu, but the staples that we did order (fish and chips and burger and chips) were fantastic. The chips in particular were great.

I did notice that a woman at the next table, who had ordered pea soup with pancetta I think, mentioned to the waiter that her pancetta wasn't as crispy as she might have liked and he returned very quickly with some suitably crisped pancetta as a replacement.

Only 2 quibbles stop this place getting 5 stars: the coleslaw that accompanied my burger was a little bit runny, though very tasty, and soaked the bottom of the bread, and they did initially forget the hot water to heat the baby food (they were quite busy) so I had only just started feeding him when our food arrived which meant that mine went a little cold. Those are really minor quibbles though, and I would wholeheartedly recommend this place and definitely go back.

As an additional bonus, for those with kids, there is a play area at the back. Not sure if you can eat there (there are tables but maybe only for drinks?) but it was great and my son thoroughly enjoyed the swings.

“Guaranteed a warm welcome in this...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2010

Guaranteed a warm welcome in this brilliant gastro pub. Staff are polite, friendly, and articulate! They all have a good knowledge of the dishes and wines on the menu and the service is efficient and discreet. Food's not half bad too! Try it on a warm summer evening when you can eat outside and watch the bowling .... Just about as good as it gets.
