“Great location, crummy guesthouse”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

This is a very strange place. I was reprimanded for being late (I arrived at 1.45pm when my eta was 1pm) and shown up a dingy and slightly smelly staircase. Nearly turned and fled, but the rooms turned out to be clean - though not comfortable in any way. Everything was awkward - filling the kettle, plugging it in, pouring it out - not enough space basically. Bed set at an angle to TV so you couldn't watch it without getting a chair from the other room (luckily we had booked 2 rooms). Strange conversation with the manager on our way back from parking the car (he had to come with me to direct) during which he started rather inappropriately talking about a gay couple living nearby. Straightforward full English breakfast in a totally characterless room the next morning (strictly 8 - 9am even though it was SUNDAY!!!!!). I could not wait to leave and felt it just was not good enough for the money. It is indeed very central but take my advice and walk to another guest house.

This is a very unkind review which bears no resemblance to the guest house or the service that we provide. We hope that readers can be assured of this from the 5 star rating overall that we carry from reviews from our other guests. I can only imagine this reviewer has chosen to do this as mention of a gay couple (which was just an incidental piece of information) seemed to offend her. It offends us that in this day and age people can be so intolerant.

We do not "reprimand" our guests and the reviewer even makes it sound like personally being shown where to park her car, not service but an inconvenience! She also fails to mention the free parking that she was given on the Sunday which she seemed very happy to accept at the time!

Please have a look above at the photos of the guest house so that you can see for yourselves the staircase that is referred to as "dingy and smelly". The staircase was recarpeted just over a year and a half ago and does not smell and the bannisters were sanded down, restored and revarnished. They lead up from the original tiled front hallway - you can see this also in the photos. Please also see above the photos of the breakfast room which this reviewer describes as a "characterless room". The guest house is a Georgian townhouse in a Conservation Area which in itself speaks volumes of the character of the building and indeed the historic importance of the area, most our guests appreciate staying at our B&B for this very reason!

The reviewer also seems to have had a problem with the kettle - "Filling it" perhaps may be slightly awkward as its a bathroom wash hand basin and not a kitchen sink! "Plugging it in" - well if putting a plug in a socket at the same level and right beside the tea tray is awkward for someone, I just dont understand that! "Pouring it out" - dont know what to say about that but surely if the reviewer has problems pouring a kettle that must not be specific to our ones ?!? ... I think these comments say more about the reviewer than the kettle itself!!

The reviewer also says she could not watch the tv in her room without getting a chair and sitting in front of it - as a matter of fact, the TVs in most of the rooms are 32 inch High Definition LED TVs (again see for yourself in the photos above!) which means that its actually hard not to see them!

Our breakfast is 8am to 9am everyday of the week - it is at this time, as this is the average time that suits the majority of our guests! Our "straightforward breakfast" (which given the review must be a compliment!) features David Joinsons award winning sausages (also found in some of Chesters finest restaurants as a comfort food option), a dry cured bacon also used in Chesters oldest 5 star hotel selected by their Michelin star chef ... just to give you an idea of the quality of the locally sourced food thats on offer!!

We are without exception the most keenly priced B&B within Chesters City Walls and even at that we still offer excellent high quality products which most reviewers have picked up on in their reviews commenting on the good value of our B&B so please, make your own mind up by reading the other reviews that are more respresentative and present a more realistic view of our establishment!

I arranged a stay over in Chester for me and my wife for Valentines night. We chose to stay in The Grosvenor Place as it was situated close to the city centre and local restaurants. I was unsure where to take my wife for our meal and the owners recommended alocal Tapas bar which went down a treat. The room was very cosy, clean, and comftable. We were made to feel very welcome and treated to a cooked breakfast which had the ingredients sourced locally which I liked.
Will be staying again in the future

We had a great stay at Grosvenor Guest House on 9 February. Just an hour from Manchester and very easy to find on the edge of Chester centre.

There is no reception as such, so the owner comes us to your room to explain the local area. What Stefan doesn't know about Chester's catherdral/pubs/bars/clubs/restaurants then it's not worth knowing. He explained to us (with a map in hand) where we would find everything. His knowledge and proudness of the area is actually a joy to listen to.

The rooms are fairly small, and we found a little chilly when we arrived. Ther bathroom is spotless with a nice power shower and soaps/shampoo's provided. There's a flat screen TV and a very comfy double bed.

The centre is a nightmare to park but the onwner can get you a pass for only a fiver which I thought was great value.

As we were without the kids and only here for 24 hours, we didn't want to do much sightseeing and just wanted to do as much in Chester centre itself. There is a pub actually facing the rooms which is handy as you're on your way out. A 5 minute walk round the back (Stefan will explain) and you get to the main street, that has dozens of inn's that really take you back in time. We stopped at The Tap Brewery and had lunch and some traditional drinks - it was lovely. We had a few hours walking round the centre and visiting a few more pubs before going back to shower and get ready.

Night time and Chester really comes alive, we went further up the street (passed the La Tasca) to the Slug & Lettuce that had a good dance DJ on and great atmosphere. Then we visited a few more places and went back around 1am.

Breakfast was very, very good. We picked our time the night before and it was being cooked as we came down. We had cereal and then a beautiful full Engoish with local products.

Overall we had a great mini-break, not really a "traditional" time in Chester. But we'll be doing that on our next visit in the summer......

I had the pleasure of staying in the Grosvenor Place Guest House and was very pleased with all aspects. It is fantastically well located, situated in a nice quiet street really close to the shopping area. What impressed me most was the attention to detail. Although the single bedroom was quite small, it was very comfortable. The bathroom and bedroom were spotlessly clean, and the quality of the mattress and pillow provided were 5 star, something which can often disappoint in a guest house, but not here! I slept like a log. For a good value option in terms of price, I was very impressed with the obvious investment in a quality bed and bedding. Ditto the breakfasts, which included locally produced sausages and bacon of the highest quality. Guests are very well looked after, and I was impressed to notice that French and Spanish are spoken as well as English. I hope to stay there again soon!

We were finding it hard to find somewhere to stay in Chester and ended up here. I think the rest of the guest house is of a higher standard but our room on the ground-floor was very small and basic. Fan in the bathroom was nosy and the toilet had a mascerator which likely would wake the whole building in the middle of the night. There was noise from the street and guests arriving late would ring the front-door bell. I must say though that all of this was pointed out to us before we brought our bags in. The host was also very helpful in recommending somewhere to eat and things to do around the town. But once the night settled down we ended up having a good sleep in a warm room, which was all we needed really. The hotel was well located - everything just a short walk away. Breakfast was very nice - the host was more than keen for us to eat eat eat, but again the dining room was fairly basic. Inexpensive but basic - ok if that's all you need.

Thanks for your review - as you pointed out in your review, you stayed in our ground floor double room which was the only room that we had left on the Saturday night that you stayed. Its a room that offers people who want to stay in Chester city centre but have accessibility issues a ground floor option or alternatively its also a budget option room as its ground floor, smaller and more basic than our other rooms. Nonetheless, it still benefits from a bed with a luxury standard mattress and high quality bedding and linen as well as our superb quality full English breakfast!

Guests normally do not ring the front door bell late at night as everyone has keys but if this happened when you stayed we apologise for the disruption. With respect to the macerator in the toilet and the bathroom fan, they are relatively new and not any more noisey than any other saniflow toilet or bathroom fan and with the high ceilings in the guest house and insulated floors it would not be heard elsewhere in the guest house.

I think that in your case, you were looking for a quiet night in and so this room on a Saturday night did not fit the bill but probably would have had you stayed any other night of the week!

We wish you well on the rest of your travels!

This is a really nice little place great location and a great city to see and would come back in the summer. Staff are very helpful about information about the city which is good. Was surprised how clean the room was and would have no problem going back again which i hope to do next summer with my wife.
