“Pretty good - but too many niggles to be great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

We stayed for two nights (Bed & Breakfast) to explore Chester. The hotel has some very good points but lets itself down in others.
PLUS POINTS
Location - Very centrally located - easy to walk to just about anthing in Chester
On site parking - very convenient - charged at £7.50 per night
Room ready earlier than stated at 12.30 (which is always appreciated)
Staff - very helpful and friendly
Room - we traded up to an executive room which was clean, large and well equipped. The Club Lounge (for use of executive roomholders) was pleasant and the free wine/beer and nibbles were a nice touch.
Nice spa area - we didn't use it much but it was very pleasant
NEGATIVES
Restaurant, whilst pleasantly situated was like a bomb-site on Wednesday breakfast,. Nowhere near enough staff. Hard to find a clean table, food on the floor, not enough re-plenishing of fruit and cereals (seem to have simply run out). Thursday breakfast however was OK. More staff and none of the problems of the previous day. We ate in the restaurant one evening and it was fine although the 'maitre 'd' had a hole in his trousers the size of a 50p piece. Simply didn't look the part at all. Brandon however was great. Kind, polite and nothing too much trouble.
Sleep quality. The construction of the hotel makes it noisy. Neighbours above and next door could be easily heard nad this made for a poor nights sleep.
Broken window catch in the room which made opening and closing the window a problem.Probably also quite dangerous with small children?

All in all, not too bad and with some extra touches, could be good.

Room Tip: We traded up to an executive room which gives the usual fluffy gowns and slippers, are also on the u...

Dear David K

Im really pleased you found the hotel and the team to be extremely friendly and helpful

Im sorry that on this ocassion we didnt fully Wow you with the normal standard we set. We are aware of the problems occured on Wednesday breakfast and have completed an internal investigation to make sure it never happens again.

The Maitre 'd' also has new trousers after an unfortunate incident in the cellar earlier that day

look forward to welcoming you back soon

Kind regards
Peter

I am a regular customer of Intercontinental Hotels and have to say that this Hotel does them no justice.

The Hotel is tired looking, and needs some investment. The shower was particularly poor, more worthy of an old fashioned cheap bed & breakfast.

Wish I had saved £50 and stayed at the Holiday Inn express at the racecourse.

I stayed here for our anniversary for one night and was really impressed with how friendly and informative the staff were. A massive thankyou to Jack and Brandon on the bar, paul in gym and Jodie on reception for making our stay at the crowne plaza memorable and awesome. Your all contributed to a great crowne plaza experience and I will be coming back with my partner to stay again.

We chose this hotel as it was so close to Chester Race course and we were spending the day there. As all the other hotels on race day the prices were higher than usual.

The entrance is tucked away and not very awe inspiring, however once inside it was extremely welcoming. We had arrived before midday as we were off the races and was pleasantly surprised to find that we were able to check into our too,
We stayed in an executive room which was at the top of the hotel and in the quiet zone unfortunately had no view to speak of, however this did not bother us at all for this visit.
The room was large as was the bathroom, some parts were looking a bit tired but I didn't spend the weekend wasting time photographing all the bad points!

The shower was disappointing as the water pressure was very low and the hair dryer was the usual travel size that takes forever to dry hair with. I struggled to find anything in the room to inform me about the hotel services, e.g. check out time and the service on the TV where I suspect it was didn't seem to work. Slippers and robes were provided and the bathroom provided gel and shampoo.

Breakfast was served in the restaurant and was buffet style although waiter service could be provided if asked for, staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. A good choice was on offer and very tasty.

We used the hotel car park, which was charged at £7.50 and were able to leave the car there after checking out to walk through the city to meet friends.

Although the outside of the hotel isn't attractive it is worth looking inside you will be surprised. I would recommend staying here, it is close to the race course and the city centre.

Room Tip: Pay extra for an executive room in the quiet zone.

This Hotel is located in a terrific part of the Roman Walled City of Chester. Easy access to the North Coast of Wales via the wonderfully efficient British Rail System, Chester is a fascinating city. Although you will need to grab a taxi from the rail terminal to get to the hotel, the location is perfect for exploring Watergate Street where many restaurants, shops and attractions are located.
The staff at this Crowne Plaza are friendly, welcoming and most helpful. Our room was comfortable and provided all the amenities associated with IHG. Free Wi-Fi was provided and the Continental Breakfast in the Club Room was sufficient. The Concierge was very helpful in arranging early morning transportation to the Rail Terminal.
The Bartenders in the restaurant are some of the best around, and provide lively conversation during the evening. We ate in the restaurant on two occasions and the food was very good although the service was somewhat slow and disorganized. Waited way too long for the bill at the end of the meal, with only 3 other tables occupied.
The Crowne Plaza is a great place to start your visit to Chester and to use as a base of sightseeing. The tour buses are just across the street which the reception staff were not aware of. We would definitely stay here again. Give it your consideration.

Room Tip: Room 407 - very nice although a little odd with a slanting roof, but decided to keep the room after...

Dear Mark and Don

Thank you for your nice review.

Please be assured that I will pass your comments on to the staff and especially the bar tenders, comments like these are the best reward for the big effort all the team members are making.

Kind regards

We've stayed at this hotel a number of times over the last 2/3 years. The public areas have recently been refurbished , which has brightened them up a bit. The bar & restaurant are now much more welcoming than previously. The hotel is always very clean, the service is good, and the staff are excellent. Nothing is too much trouble. It's slightly let down by it's main entrance, the outside being dark, dismal concrete. Once inside, everything changes. The best feature of this hotel is probably it's location - a quality hotel within the old city walls. Plenty to see & do within a couple of minutes walk. If you have time, visit the cathedral. It's well worth the entrance fee.
