“Walking Tour of Chester - marvelous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

I went on a Chester “Daily Walking Tour” starting at 10:30am on Tuesday, 13th August, (cost £6 or concession £5) with a group of people led by a senior resident of Chester, who was a wealth of information. We started at the Town Hall (Tourist Visitors Information Centre) where firstly, he explained the history of the Town Hall and the wonderful sculpture out front, then into the grounds of Chester Cathedral, where he pointed out interesting historical features; through ”The Rows” shopping walkways; past the beautiful Chester Grosvenor Hotel; over Eastgate, advising the history of the Clock, along the old Roman Walls to the amphitheatre; along the walls to Bridgegate and beyond; past St Olave’s old Viking church finally ending up back at the Tourist Visitors Information Centre to Chester. The tour went for approx. 1½ hours, which included time for photos. I loved it as it is an excellent introduction to Chester. I highly recommend this walking tour.

“A great introduction”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013 via mobile

This was a great introduction to the city. Lets face it, you can't learn all of Chester's history in just over 90 minutes in foot.
What we got was a very interesting taste and plenty of ideas for futher exploration.
The guide was knowledgable and had an engaging manner.
The walk was at an easy pace with more standing than walking. I would guess less than a mile.
Well worth the cost.

I recently took my two sisters on a walking tour of Chester booked through the guide at the Town Hall. I actually work in the city and live a few miles away and so know quite a bit about it. However I thought it best to leave it to an 'expert' to introduce my visitors to the fascinating history of Chester. We were joined on the tour with a delightfully mixed group from across the globe, Australia, Canada, the USA and Leicester! What a waste of a morning. The guide told us hardly anything about the Roman occupation of the city; didn't take us to the Amphitheatre, Roman garden, tell us about the Roman baths that were there; mention the Roman and Medieval walls; the medieval cross in the centre; the Rows, the Welsh curfew, the list goes on and on. It would be easier to say what she did tell us. Also, her delivery was stale and boring and she was far more concerned with the health and safety aspects of the event, important though they undoubtedly are. We were fortunately able to carry on with our own agenda afterwards but I fear the remainders of the group will have left Chester with little insight into this ancient treasured city.

The Guild of Chester Tour Guides is very concerned by these comments. All our members are highly qualified, with years of guiding experience, and very keen to share their enthusiasm and knowledge of this lovely city. Feedback from our tours is normally excellent so we are therefore very sad and puzzled that you have had such a negative experience and are very keen to learn more so we can take appropriate action. We would be very grateful, therefore, if you could send your contact details to the Chairman of the Guild:
Mary Ann Cameron m-a-cameron@hotmail.co.uk and she will contact you as soon as possible. We sincerely apologise for this negative experience and look forward to hearing from you.

“Chester Ghost Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

Really enjoyed our Ghost Tour of Chester City. We started off early evening and ended in darkness which was appropriate for the ghostly tales.

Our guide was dressed in character, black coat, black top hat with a cane - very polite and very knowledgeable, walking at an easy pace for everyone to keep up. He spoke clearly and at the right pitch so that everyone could hear, even above the traffic which occasionally passed in the street.

Of course a few late comers joined the group, even after it quite clearly states arrive 10 minutes early which means @ 7.20 pm and not past 7.30 pm when our guide had already started !!!.

Unfortunately no ghostly happenings or sightings on our tour but, overall, well worth the money and we shall take another on one of our trips to Chester, and may get taken on a different route to hear more ghostly happenings in the beautiful city of Chester.

WELL WORTH THE MONEY -take an umbrella in case of showers.
