“Atmosphere & Ambiance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

Stopped by for lunch while touring around Chester. The place is full of history... so old. Originally was a coach house that offered, food, ale and lodging for travellers. It was quaint to a tee. The staff provided good service though the food was not as good as I expected for English pub fare. Had the scampi as they were out of my original choice. The serving size was small.

Just spent the night at this hotel which is in the centre of Chester. Had a room at the back of the hotel which was not too noisy, it was small but adequate for my husband and myself.
We both found it very warm.
The only meal we had there was breakfast I asked for scrambled egg, bacon, tomato and mushroom they brought sausage bacon and tomato but they did take it back and change however my husband had finished his by the time they returned it.
But I would say that the hotel had character.

Room Tip: This hotel is in the centre of Chester no parking but you can park in a very close by car park which...

Back from a two night stay which met all our needs. A place with real character & service was excellent. Nothing too much trouble and the selection of home brewed ales second to none. Great location and the breakfasts cooked to order.Tempted to return for the New Year bash.

Room Tip: Wor lass wouldn't have been happy in room 8 after reading about the spectral presences.

We have just returned from a Friday- Sunday stay in Chester. Can't fault the location. Can't fault the food. Can't fault the friendly staff. The rooms are clean but so cheaply decorated you feel the place is overpriced. The bed frames are new I think, and maybe the mattresses too, but the mattress in our room was too small for the frame. My pillows kept disappearing down a void between mattress and headboard!!! Cheap decor. What a shame!

Room Tip: we stayed in room 2 at the rear, quiet. sister in room 6 facing and was kept awake with outside nois...

We have just come back from a weekend at the Pied Bull.. We had a lovely time. Unlike previous review we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The hotel has its oddities .. The plug holes, the slanting beds, the different size stairs (not for the faint hearted). We had a lovely meal on Friday, washed down with some real ale. the breakfasts were also very nice with a good choice. the location was brilliant, walking distance to the cathedral, shops, river etc. and thanks for the tip of the £4 car parking. The only downfall of the weekend was we were woken up very early by smokers under our bedroom window (room 10). Other than that we would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at the Pied Bull by chance and what an experience it was!! Easy to find and extremely conveniently located in the centre of the Roman walled city of Chester. The hotel was established in the 1400's and whilst this is amazing in itself to a traveller from New Zealand. This is standard fare for this classic city.
We chose a room with a four poster bed and it seems a ghost, (not nasty but mischevious according to the staff), I can tell you from experience we had some interesting things happen to us in our stay alone, ( nothing bad just some great and weird stories to tell friends that we can dine out on for a long time).
We had a wonderful time here, the location is fabulous we walked to thje Roman Amphitheatre in fifteen minutes, (slow walk), we toured the city walls and walked along the River Dee all within minutes of the hotel. The historic and unforgetable Cathedral is literally across the road and the hotel is also conveniently located to motorways for driving to North Wales which we had to do (about an hour away).
We loved our time here and would return without hesitation. The downsides are ,(as per my other reviews of historic inns and hotels), they have stair access only to the rooms and these ones in particular have low beams and the stairs seem to affect your vision when coming down them. Just minor issues but non the less if you have any trouble climbing old and somewhat rickety staircases this aspect might spoil your overall enjoyment.
They do not have parking onsite (or at least not during our stay), but a car park is less then five minutes walk away and at GPB4 a day amongst the cheapest parking we had in our trip around the UK.

Looking forward to revisiting this hotel and fabulous city. If I were planning this trip again Chester would be high on my priority list and what better place to stay than the Pied Bull Inn (friendly but mischvious ghost included)

Room Tip: The room with the four poster bed, (and the ghost), is a must!!!
